Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Monday it would eliminate shifts at four U.S. plants and lay off some 2,500 workers -- or almost 5 percent of its remaining work force -- as part of an effort to cut costs and return to profitability next year.

"The layoffs come at a time when the No. 2 U.S. automaker is offering buyouts and early retirement incentives to all 54,000 of its U.S. factory workers as it attempts to recover from a $2.7 billion loss in 2007."

These jobs are never coming back. The thousands laid off have no chance of finding a job at comparable pay and benefits. There was a time when jobs like these meant security and a step up to the American dream for millions of workers. Now we have WalMcDeepot jobs.

Wish all of these people luck. Most of them thought that they would be at Ford for their careers--that was the way things used to go. I'm no expert on wage-roll types; but it'll be hard for them to find jobs anywhere near comparable. For professionals, employers walk away from people over 40 and run away from people over 50--based on personal experience.

Style is one thing. Tastes change and, for whatever reason, Detroit didn't change enough with them. But on the quality front we're paying the price for our ego trips of the 50's and 60's. Even into the 1970's, when Japanese models were first introduced, the Big Three had the chance to change their practices. But they didn't. The Japanese listened to American quality engineers and we in our cocoons wouldn't.

It is a sad day at Ford!

In case no one knows, there has been a boycott of Ford for the last 2 years. Ford Motor Company is one of the largest supporters for LOGO and other gay communities. Since the boycott only two months has shown Ford in the black.

I think it is sad that they care less for their worker than the lifestyle they want to support!

I think over 2,000 people who are loosing their jobs would agree!

Auto makers around the world are making record profits. Fox news keeps telling us the US economy is good. How can Ford be having problems?

They need to be able to change with the times. The market for large SUVs is drying up. We need smaller more efficient cars that are affordable. It doesn't help that from the new models that I have seen lately it looks like they hired the design team from GM. Ugliest cars I've ever seen Ford put out! Except the Mustang.

OK, I admit it, our cars suck. But tell the Japaneese to meet us in the courthouse. Our lawyers will kick their lawyers butts..
