I like the idea of applying for a license, having to wait 1,2, or 3 days. Beyond that it is pretty much the urban areas who are wanting this. Obviously a blackmarket weapons market wants it as well. Since a constitutional amendment would be required to "outlaw" guns, it's one of those wedge issues that won't happen. It's like Bush telling Saddam to shake his saber at ya every once in a while. If only the Bush people had not supported his executive usurpations of the constitution, there would be no precedent for future constitutional chicanery. It makes policemen happy, certainly in most places, but even most of them know criminals would simply get their weapons illegally.

This morning's Memphis Commercial-Appeal has an editorial by Wendi C. Thomas on this heinous crime. It's titled "Victims not only people hurting," and she explains that the perpetrators of such violence are not to blame because they must have been hurt themselves, while still young. This shameless advocacy of collective responsibility rather than holding individuals to account for what they have done simply makes my blood boil.

Fortunately, Dist. Atty. Gen Bill Gibbons is the one who will make the decision as to whether to go for the death penalty in this case, and he has already said that the circumstances warrant it. My son-in-law is a senior prosecutor in Gibbons' office, and he may end up being assigned the task of conducting the prosecution. We'll have to wait and see.

Wendi's column was NOT absolving blame for the perpetrator.

"In no way am I suggesting that these vicious criminals be spared punishment for their crimes."

What she said is that the murderer WAS, at one time, a child - likely a child that was neglected or worse.

This NOT being portrayed as an EXCUSE. Her point is that adults that commit crimes like this one are probably the product of an environment where that person was never guided, disciplined, nurtured, or mentored to take a DIFFERENT path as an adult.

Too many children ARE growing up to be criminals because they have NO responsible adults taking care of them. In fact, too many CHILDREN are ALREADY committing VIOLENT crimes for that very reason (among others).

THAT is Wendi's point - she is NOT excusing the murderer at all.

And don't get ME wrong on this - I want that man to be punished to the MAXIMUM extent (if that includes the death penalty, fine) because of what he did.

I am not trying to 'defend' Wendi - I want to make sure that her commentary is not being incorrectly portrayed ...
