The right for an individual to bear arms (own a gun) is what our forefathers wanted to have. There has been an interruption that it only applied to a "well regulated militia". If anyone wants to know what a militia is check out the movie "The Patriot." It is a group of citizens using their own weapons, wearing civilian clothing, not conscripted and they can quit the fight when ever they wish. The "National Guard" is not a militia; they are regular U.S. Government Military under contract from each state. If you don't believe that, just ask your state National Guard unit to refuse to follow the orders from the U.S. Government and see what happens.

Our forefathers knew that to only allowing the government to have weapons would leave the citizens of the country completely defenseless, like they were in England. By the way the weapons the original militia was state of the art for that time also.

"If the conservative majority on the Supreme Court rules in favor of Mr. Heller and against the D.C. gun laws, it will be ruling against the original understanding of the Second Amendment.

      - Kevin R.C. Gutzman, J.D., Ph.D."

Way over educated Doc. Lets make it simple.

Do you have the RIGHT to defend yourself?

      Yes or No

DC is still not a state. It is a Federal District. The Second Amendment has exactly the same meaning as the First Amendment(and the rest of the first 10).

As you interpret the Second Amendment, just keep switching the First with the Second. Either interpretation should be equal.
