...my theory is that "They" is actually a front for ex-intel types who start rumors, then track them to find out how far and fast they spread, and how much the rumors mutate en route...supposedly located on the Kansas City Strip, "THEY" are supposedly apolitical, considering ALL politicians to be nuts...

There's a lot of red tape associated with the largest government ever assembled in the US.
That, and the McCarthy style of operating in which Cheney engages takes some extensive cleaning up before it can become public.
You know, "The dog ate my e-mails", "we dont know who leaked that information" and "I'm not a member of the Executive Branch."

Some of this is reminiscent of Richard Nixon's "Dirty tricks" brigade, but cleverer.
Nixon, for his sins, had to resign in disgrace. George W. Bush, for his, will gracefully retire to the ranch, sink a few beers, and start thinking about the lecture circuit.

Shades of Bush number one's passportgate...searching Gov. Clinton's overseas trips for political purposes. Seems the monitoring system, put in place to detect unauthorized access to VIP passport information, seems to have worked. The question is how was the investigation into these unauthorized access of Obama's passport info handled?

of course it's the Clintons ........look how they had Sandy Berger go into the National Archives to remove national security documents pertaining to their administration to keep them from the 9/11 commission........I find it extremely odd though that this is happening now with all the troubles his campaign is beginning to encounter........

I really believe the most LIKELY explanation is a few bored clerks realized that they could actually look at a few files and decided to go for it. There's nothing in what's posted to suggest anything else except for the Oliver Stone mindset of those on the left.

it couldn't possibly be that with all the troubles starting to face him and his polling numbers in free fall it's the perfect time to play the victim now.....let's get those polling numbers up to where they were.... and what better way to do it then some nefarious right wing conspiracy or better yet shades of unauthorized removal of national security documents from the national archives by that Clinton mole Sandy Berger..... of course with his power and his connections as a US Senator he has no connections to anyone who is a supporter of his in the State Department who could do this at his behest.......no of course not........not Obama.......change you can believe in..........

Three breaches of confidential information since January, and they are trying to say it was curiosity!
Regardless of who is behind this, it's illegal.
I am a retired state worker, and i know the reasons people snoop into other's people's business, and it's never for a good cause, or completely innocent!

Are you REALLY going to say, that after a whole lifetime in social work, you never, not even ONCE, came across a file that was just plain interesting --even though it wasn't your case -- so you read it? Or, picked up something that really wasn't for your eyes, but intrigued you so you finished reading it?
If that is true, then you are either the purest person on earth since the Virgin Mother or a iiar.

not excuses, just not necessarily the big, evil conspiracy that so many of you are trying to make this into.
Show me some proof that Bush or Clinton was behind this and I'm with you 100%.
I don't condone this, I think those guys should be fired for sure and probably arrested, but that DOESN'T prove that they were acting on the behest of anyone else. People, as a rule are just plain nosy.

I have a small company, we all know each other, we all get along, my husband and I work right next to everyone else-- we don't expect others to do the "dirty work" that we won't do. But, I learned the hard way, I cannot trust others not to look at stuff if I leave it on my desk -- even if it's clearly something they shouldn't be looking at. It is only human nature, and by keeping those things under lock and key and passworded, I have, inadvertently, made that stuff even MORE attractive to my employees. This does not make them terrible, nasty people. It doesn't even make them nosier than average. It's just human nature.

Hilarious. The people who did the snooping were either fired or disciplined, yet here we have Obama's camp asking for a "full investigation". Get over it. If we are going to ask for a "full investigation" over Obama's passport files, we had also better get one going on Brittany Spear's medical file brreach too. It is far more damaging to have your medical records breached, than your passport info.
But yet, I haven't heard any of you complaining about Brittany's right to privacy.

Once again, for those who have ADD, three people looked into Obama's files. Two were fired and the other was disciplined. How can you say that more needs to be done? What more can you do? If these files are that critical, that we need a Congress oversight committee to waste time and money to determine that something went wrong, then we should destroy these files immediately. They are far too important to even have in existence.
Get over it...

What is obama afraid they will find???? is he a little nervous about something??? i think he has something that he doesnt want to get out. what happened to full disclosure??? Let me guess if Bushs passport info was looked into that would be okay because he is a repub and dems are above this being done to them ??? So i think i just figured this out. False accusations and lies about Bush are 100% okay but to look into someones travels in the past who has ties to less then reputable people is wrong ??? yep its the 1 sided way of the dems rearing it ugly head again ...

I have a passport, and what are they going to find out, where he was born, date of birth? Some travel info. They could probably get a lot more out of his trash can and I am sure his FBI and CIA file contain a lot more.
As senator (one of the most powerful men in DC) you would think he could prevent this from happening. The problem is he is part of the problem. What is he doing to protect my information?

Senators are not in charge of the State Department, the Secretary of State is. Obama is no more responsible for this security breach than John McCain, Mitch McConnell or Joe Lieberman. As for what he's doing to protect your information and safety, you might want to check the story.

This happened on three separate occasions, by three different low level contract employees. It's interesting that, when push comes to shove, the Republicans on this forum don't give a single thought to our national security. None of you cares what other information has been available to anybody who decides to snoop on confidential government information?

They will defend and make excuses for their political party if the end result is that they have to start eating out of dumpsters.
In reality, i know a young man who is a republican, devout republican, defends everything they do with a vengence. He is working a minimum wage job and if it wasn't for his girlfriend who lives in subsidized housing and receives SSI, he would be homeless. He doesn't care, all that is important to him is supporting republicans.
He admits that during the Clinton years he had good jobs, lived well, had nice cars,,, NOW HE'S WALKING! But none of that is important, only being a repub is important to him.
Classic repub attitude.

I just never realize that my passport was such a high security document.
What's on your passport -- name, address, date of birth, country of origin, citizenship, where you've traveled. Now, your birthdate is sort of something you don't want bandied about, but, most people don't hide it except maybe the year. The rest of this stuff is not all that confidential.
Of course, if the state department has evidence of international shennagins and THAT's the file that was breached, then I could see what the big deal is.

Have you ever applied for a passport? There's not only the paperwork that you have to fill out, but a whole lot more that the government fills out. At the very least these guys had access to his social security number, and it's just not feasible that that and the actual passport are the only information contained on the classified government file.

This was done 3x, beginning in January. Apparently by "contract employees." Hmmm. Were they given a security clearance? Or was it just given to their employer who's supposed to screen their employees? What else did they peek at? It's that easy to breach security in our country? Three times? What, not enough info the first time, or the second? What did they think would change?
So, Obama's people got back to them as quickly as they learned, & demanded an investigation. When faux newsmax printed its lie, Obama's people got a swift retraction. I have a hunch Obama isn't going to be namby pamby about SOB's screwing with him.
Finally, I have to say this; WHO is running the state dept. that allows for such a breach? THREE TIMES! (that we know about, of course).Does this tell anyone anything about the privatization of government responsibilities? Hello. Anybody home?

Yeah, actually it is. Airline manifests are not confidential. Travel agents have no confidentality requirements or priviledges. If I am on trial for something, my doctor cannot testify for or against me on anything s/he learned as my doctor -- either about my phyical state or my mental state. My travel agent cannot refuse to testify as to my whereabouts or what tickets I bought.

My problem really is not with the disciplining of these people -- they should be fired and probably have charges brought against them. My problem is with those who are absolutely admamant that this was done at the behest of (choose who you can't stand or outright hate more) Bush or Clinton. Hell, maybe they got together to gang up on Obama and it's BOTH of them.

What kind of response is this? What's he got to hid? Nothing. I got nothing in my records that I'm afraid of too, but damn, I'll go after you with every legal means available if you looked at my personal, and therefore, restricted from your prying eyes, information. But that is not the issue here. As in almost every scandal in this administration, everything is done for politics, not the security or interests of our country but for a political party. It is very interesting and an incredible coincidence that each of these security breaches was done after a peak in Obama's polls and after he won crucial primaries. I'd call this looking for dirt on a political opponent using government, restricted resources...illegal spying. No he doesn't have anything to hide, but the republicans do. Why else resort to these methods?

If this information had been used in anyway, I'd be right here with you on the breach of security bandwagon. But, it hasn't been.
And, as far as no one, ever, ever looking at info that they shouldn't see just out of idle curiosity, that will never stop until everything is totally automated and no human eyes ever has to look at any personal information.
Sad, but true.

I was thinking the same thing on an 'Obama the racist' thread yesterday.
what it is is bad cop police work, reaching a conclusion first and studying the evidence after in the light of your conclusion.
It's like what this administration did by asking about Iraq with 24 hours after 9/11, and the subsequent shuffling of the evidence about the 'threat' of Iraq
Off topic sure, but anytime you give evidence a quick perfunctory glance and reach a conclusion, chances are the conclusion was there all along

Once again the Liberal conspiracy theorists swarm whenever Keith unleashes his MSNBC (More Speculation News Broadcasting Company) minions to speculate and try to divert attention from Obama's absolutely dismal week and plunging ratings. Clearly Obama's handlers are hoping to create some kind, any kind of change of subject. Hate to tell you, but if just once people would let the story actually develop, they might actually base their reports on facts. Nice try, but Barack can't run or hide from this week's story, no matter how much air time CNN, MSNBC and Air America give him to try and get out of the hole he has dug for himself.

problem is, 'this week's story' is a non-story
'a preacher says crazy things from a pulpit'
if it wasn't so stupid it would be funny
'a preacher says crazy things from a pulpit' is a 'dog bites man'
now if it was 'a preacher said rational things from a pulpit' now thats a good 'man bites dog'
too bad Obama over-reacted and started playing politics
he shoulda just turned Blind Eye, or ear, uh, Open your Blind Eye
gving the matter attention and maneuvering and making speeches about it just gives it 'legitimacy' it doesn't deserve
I thought professional politicians were slicker than this
now because he gave it legitimizing attention, he's provided more ammo
everyone knows race is a minefield, so why is he lobbing words at it in a campaign?
It's just not smart
what with people waiting to jump on a single ill-chosen word like 'typical' to pop up so they can attach dire significance to it

Andea Mitchell just reported on this on MSNBC. I have always found her information to be accurate. In instances where anything new comes to light that contradicts her orignal report she has been very good about reporting on the new info
She said: 3 contract employees in 3 different passport offices. The supervisors did not pass the information up to the higher levels in the State Dept until yesterday
More info here:
Patrick F. Kennedy, Under Secretary for Management
On-the-Record Briefing on Unauthorized Accessed Passport Records
http://www.state.gov/m/rls/102460.htm
Mitchell also said there is no mechanism in place that would allow the State Dept to compel contract employees to answer questions. Any investigation of contract employees would have to be handled by the Justice Dept

"
This, from Obama's speech, is an important lesson for all Republicans. Whether or not he meant it isn't important. What is important is that, while Obama may "talk the talk", what's more important is how his followers react: how they accuse, without any evidence whatsoever. And note their words...note them carefully. Are they filled with the substance of what Obama said?

what is YOUR intrepretation of that quote, about I wasn't getting that from his campaign before. Frankly, I would have been just as happy in ignorance about his church and his whacky pastor, but the explanations and the spin that is coming out of his camp is quite disconcerting and now that either Hilary or McCain's camp threw the race card right down on the table, Obama seems more than happy to pick it up and play it.
Since the pastoral controversy started, anyone questioning Obama and/or his judgement have been shouted down as racists. Now, from Obama's mouth itself, we get the same thing -- although much more eloquently and subtly put.

"the lesson being that unless you vote for Obama you're voting for racism and division???"
Not at all. The lesson is that Obama can "talk the talk" all he wants, but his supporters are ignoring his message of unity. The accusations against the Republicans spewing forth without any evidence to back it up speak to the entrenched liberal mindsent of "they're the enemy". So while Obama speaks of unity and they all think he's wonderful and applaud his words, the reality is that the libbies don't want unity at all. They need the Republicans, or more specifically the "Neocons" as "the enemy".
You want more proof? Look at the negs my comment got. Forgetting neo who's a jack@ss and will neg me for breathing, these libbies can't stand when someone exposes their hypocrisy. An honest libbie (unlikely but statistically possible) would say, "you know, you're right. We are accusing without evidence." But not these folks.

Do you like government looking through your records? Who you've called and for how long? What you've been looking at on the Internet? Who you sent emails to and the subject of the email? Your banking information and medical records?
It's not a question of whether or not there is something to hide.
The question is one much more fundamental then that.
The question is whether the United States should be the type of country where government employees and elected officials should have unfettered and uncontrolled access to all the information about citizens that the government has on its hard drives.
Now if that uncontrolled and unfettered access doesn't scare you it should.

Obama has been very quick to join on the most recent "search for the blue dress" antics of the likes of the Judicial Watch and other right wing groups. Putting teams of "searchers" looking through the records of Hillary. Maybe that's what he meant about joining the GOP in a hands across effort.
Obama's most recent gaff, "my grandmother acted like a TYPICAL white person" would have DEMANDED immediate dismissal from the liberal press. Today it is a host of Obama supporters claiming "well what he REALLY meant was....."

Hill & Bill want to get back into the White House baaad. The Clinton years were scandalous, but witnesses DIED, & the Clintons managed to weasel out of trouble. One of the strangest cases was African-American Ron Brown, whose plane just went down in Europe, killing all aboard. Hillary had flown in the same plane just days earlier, & made her trip fine. There were A FEW news items that said Ron Brown also had a bullet hole in his skull. I waited for the outrage, the demand for an investigation--none ever came. I waited for the A. A. community to be up in arms--Nothing. Brown was to have testified in an important case--can't remember what, but it had to do with Clinton's reign. We're going to get McCain or Clinton for Prez--they're both in the POLITICAL MACHINE. PROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS.

Just reported on CNBC:
Clinton's passport records were breached in 2007 - described as a training mistake by David Gregory
The same person who looked at Obama's records in March also accessed McCain's
Mort Zuckerman had an interesting comment - he wondered if these contract employees were hoping to find some info they could sell to the tabloids

Could be. It also begs the question of what else would they "sell", if that were true. Our national security doesn't appear secure at all.

Apparently from what was reported - the system worked and the immediate supervisors were alerted right away and took action
Where the system failed - the immediate supervisors failed to forward the info up the chain to the higher levels in DC
A reporter found out about the breaches and called the State Dept for a comment yesterday. That was the first time higher level people at State heard about it

Wait a minute! How come they didn't mention McCain yesterday? And I actually turned on CNN to see what's being said about this, & the person who 'supposedly' looked @ McCain's record too is the one who wasn't fired. Hello! What's wrong with this picture? How convenient this all is.

They didn't mention Clinton yesterday either
As far as the person who looked at the Obama and McCain files in March - remember the 3 people were in different passport offices.
Apparently the first 2 incidents were "handled by the book" according to the State Dept spokesman
That told me the 3rd supervisor did not follow procedure in terminating the employee.

"News â;; Barack Obama's campaign tonight is demanding a full investigation of reports that his passport files at the State Department were viewed without authorization."
....thus illustrating how this jerry-built, collapsing ruin of a campaign is now reaching for ANYTHING to try to pull attention away from Obama's 20-year association with "Reverend Redd Foxx" Wright.
Grab some popcorn, folks. It's going to be fun watching the Obama campaign and the Clinton campaign drag out bushelfuls of each others dirty laundry, right up to the incendiary Democratic Convention - which itself should be a riot! But the real event comes in November, when the Dump-o-crats lose the presidential election and the party splinters in pieces amidst scandal, fraud and in-fighting.
You couldn't MAKE UP better material!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I'm watching the press conference now, and it turns out that they have already found that these kind of breaches have occurred on at least two other occasions. During the summer of 2007, Hillary Clinton's file was accessed. Earlier this year, John McCain's file was accessed, as well.

More:
-The same person that accessed Barack Obama's information most recently also accessed John McCain's information earlier this year. He has been "admonished and disciplined", but not fired.
-The State Department is "not prepared to provide the names of the companies that employed these contractors".

"The State Department is "not prepared to provide the names of the companies that employed these contractors".
Speaking of contractors, has anyone seen or heard from John Glasgow? He's the CFO of the contracting company that built the Clinton Presidential Library in Arkansas. He mysteriously vanished on January 28, 2008.
The reason I ask is because he is yet another in a long, LONG line of people associated with the Clintons who has vanished, died under mysterious circumstances, or have been murdered. Perhaps the government should be looking at more than Hillary's passport files.
And given the shady characters that are emerging from Obama's past, I think it's high time somebody dove into more than his passport files, as well. If one of these two yayhoo's is going to be our next president (pause, for snicker and muffled laughter), I'd like to see some disclosure on them.
Oh, and by the way - - still waiting for the Clinton's tax returns....

Yeah according to you we have more to worry about:
from some guy that rose from basically being born on the kitchen table of some cheap mobile home with a single mother and a drunk absent father to the highest office in the land.
Then we have to fear from the son of an ex-head of the CIA and ex-president and his VP who has been in and out of government his whole life, SECDEF and head of one of the largest military contractors. GWB's granddad was also a senator and military contractor during WWII. Educated in all the proper, private schools. GWB is the definition of legacy. Look it up in the dictionary.
Hell, Cheney has already shot one guy in the face.
And you think some hillbilly from Arkansas is more connected?
Why do you hate people who are like a Horatio Alger story?

He lives across the street from me, and works at the local 7-11.
He was driving a ready mix truck, but he didn't like that job so he took up working in the convenience store.

I wonder what Keith Olbermann's response will be on his next show. Will he overlook the breach against Hillery, and the not too subtle condemnation of her as the source behind the breach of Osama Obama. Will he call his flagrant miscarriage as an indication that he (Keith) is the : WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD?

Has everyone forgotten already that the personal folders of the Veteran's administration have been compromised. That Automatic Data Processing has announced that millions of clients have had their files accessed, that thousands of e-mails from the Whitehouse have disappeared?
None of this seems to have any interest with Obama, just his file being accessed has him sooooooooo upset.

The files that were stolen from a laptop from a government official is totally unrelated. That info was lost by carelessness. This was a willful breach that was aimed at the records of one individual. If someone targeted your personal information. Just yours. Wouldn't you feel violated?

Clinton's records were accessed in a training class - sounded like new empliyees were being trained. Apparently you were supposed to put in your own information and see how the system worked. Someone in the class decided to put in Clinton's name. It was handled immediately in the class

The question here is not a partisan one, in fact it has little to do with Barack Obama. The question is how secure is classified government information and what does this mean to not only our privacy, but also our national security? Even if these are all cases of "imprudent curiosity", it's still should make us all wonder who else could access this or even more sensitive information.

It wasn't Bush. It was probably the Clinton's. If it was Bush he would have disavowed the event even happening. Rice would have said nothing about the matter at all. She would have been ordered to shut her mouth. The fact that Rice brought it up and apologized seems a little much for this administration to do if it had culpability. It would surely be setting a precedent.

"The question here is not a partisan one"
Obama and his supporters immediately MADE this a personal and partisan issue. The attack on Hillary by innuendo and the recitation of who appointed which State Department personnel was a bold faced attempt to link Hillery with the leak.
Notice how Hillary IMMEDIATELY called for an investigation when the news was announced by the press, and Obama bled Crocodile Tears about how unfair it is being against HIM.
TYPICAL

Who has the motive? Why was his record singled out? What will it take for Hillary to win this election? I'll tell you. She has to kill Obama in the remaining states. I mean landslide victories or get all the support of the super delegates. I'll concede the point that it probably wasn't a direct call from Hillary or Bush themselves, but probably some overzealous supporters. We shall see as the facts come out.

Oh yeah. Did you hear Richardson's speech endorsing Obama? It was incredible! I'm sure Hillary is somewhere, in a dark room, listening to Madam Butterfly and slowly turning a light on and off while weeping softly to herself.
If that woman had a shred of humanity in her, she would drop out of the race now.

I'll would like to hear that speech. Do you have a link? More info came out saying that all the candidates passport info has been breached. So I rescind my earlier political comments. I see it as a bunch of mischievous employees. I still think there should be a full investigation to find out if they shared the information they got with anyone else.

America should be very suspicious of the Bush administration and attempts at illegal domestic spying and the "intentional" use of personal information to destroy anyone who opposes this takeover of our liberties.
Let's look at who benefited after 9/11. The law enforcement and intelligence services benefited by Bush's illegal domestic surveillance and the loosening of the Constitution rights to privacy. This was likely done to PROTECT those in our intelligence services who were already violating the laws and in jeopardy of being exposed.
Now we are seeing that there are many ways to violate a person's "rigth to be left alone by an overly intrusive government."
If you are one of those people who believe in our Constitution and individual rights than you should think twice about ever putting a Bush crony like McCain in office.
McCain is the worst course for America.

Level heads should prevail until an investigation is done, no one should be blaming anyone, apparently it was not politically motivated, just a few curious techy contract employees. And why are they hiring contract employees instead of regular staffing people at that department, if anything its the republicans at fault.

This is not the first time this has happened and it probably wont be the last. We are not talking about some sophisticated spy ring here. Somebody went snooping and got caught and fired for it. Lets try not to make this into some vast right wing conspiracy.

Wolfie2007:
"I sunk this story as it is totally incomplete. The passport files of Hillary Clinton and John McClain were also breached."
Yes, but the story is Obama DEMANDS an investigation into this OUTRAGEOUS Passport Breach, followed by his supporters, including the more than ever unreliable and biased Keith Olbermann's rant on how those who were guilty were in place because of the Clintons.
Hillary demanded an investigation before it was announced that she too had been breached. The story is not only about the BREACH it is now about Obama's reaction and his supporters unsupported acquesations.

"McCormack said one of the individuals who accessed Obama's files also reviewed McCain's file earlier this year. This contract employee has been reprimanded, but not fired. The individual no longer has access to passport records, he said."
"In Clinton's case, an individual last summer accessed her file as part of a training session involving another State Department worker. McCormack said the one-time violation was immediately recognized and the person was admonished.
"Obama's records were accessed without permission on three separate occasions -- Jan. 9, Feb. 21 and as recently as last week, on March 14."
"The incidents raise questions as to whether the information was accessed for political purposes and why two contractors involved in the Obama search were dismissed before investigators had a chance to interview them."

i'm not a conspiracy theory advocate, buts lets be real about this. the first look in january could have been "curiosity". but the second look in february is "suspicious" which makes the third look in march definitely "conspiratorial" in nature.

I'm surprised that Keith Olbermann hasn't grabbed Obama during an interview and started french kissing him.
Dr Benwah - as more of the true Obama is brought out for public examination I think he should do the right thing and drop out of the race.
He has no chance in November.

I hope the media can get back to discussing the relationship between Obama and his racist church where he takes his daughters.
Or to Obamas' great judgment you know dealing with Resko, staying in this church in spite of it's anti-American, and racist commentary. How the evil White man is doing all he can to keep the Black man down.
No one knew anything about Obama a year ago. He makes great speeches and everyone starts following without knowing the man.
Lets look into his judgment and his character.
Charismatic speakers have had the people follow them in the past without knowing what they were really about.
The end results were not so good for those people.

The State Department investigation into how and why the passport files of three presidential candidates were breached is scrutinizing an employee at a Virginia-based company, which is headed by an adviser to Barack Obama's campaign.

I didn't really have the whole story. It seems that all three candidates records have been breached. Two questions: Why did it take so long to investigate these breaches? Did any of the information gathered shared with anyone else? A full investigation is in order.
