5 myths: 47 million Americans do not have health insurance »

Posted By JessicaLaurie 1 year, 7 months ago in Style

This figure comes from the U.S. Census Bureau. What most people don't know, however, is that the Bureau counts anyone who went without health insurance during any part of the previous year as "uninsured." So if you weren't covered for just one day in 2007, you're one of the 47 million.

Myth No. 1 blows the whole idea out the window.

good find, jessica. I hope people will actually read it, but I fear those who want universal health care will just dismiss it out of hand (like Acer, up there).

I went to the Health and Human Services web site to check this story.

        look for yourself: http://aspe.hhs.gov/health/reports/05/uninsured...

        From the report:

The CPS reported figure of 45.8 million uninsured represents the number of uninsured for a full year.

The vast majority (79%) of the uninsured are citizens.

21% of the uninsured are below age 18 and 63% are under age 34.

My view: Health care is not just emergency. It is preventitive care, vision and dental and all the rest you pay pennies for now or thousands later.

If you want to compare us with other countries, do it for real. Canadians live longer; their babies don't die as often. They don't sell their houses for operations. Cherry-picking where our numbers are better, implies how dismal it is overall.

Contrary to myth, the movie 'Sicko' wasn't about the uninsured. It was about those with insurance who still wound up living in their cars, when real illness struck.
