New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president, calling him a "once-in-a- lifetime leader" who can unite the nation and restore America's international leadership.

According to the Obama campaign - Richardson will officially make the announcement at a campaign event with Senator Obama today in Portland Ore @ 12:30 PM.

This could be the break Obama needs to counter the Clinton campaign's racist attacks and get his own campaign rolling again. Gov. Richardson, one of the most experienced and widely respected figures in the party, may be the most important figure still available to endorse either candidate. He probably cannot bring the Hispanic voters to Obama en masse, but his endorsement will certainly cause some of them to reconsider their support of Senator Clinton.
Many are repelled by the Clinton's unprincipled pursuit of power, and fear that they are damaging the party beyond repair in time for the November election. There are even rumors that Al Gore, the last really major uncommitted figure, is considering an endorsement of Obama sometime before the Pennsylvania primary.

Lets see, a super delegate going against the will of the voters.
Hillary did win the New Mexico primary, why go against the voters wishes in his state?

Super delegates aren't rule-bound to follow the popular or earned-delegate vote in their state, nor should they be. Many voters are notoriously fickle, poorly informed, and easily swayed by today's headlines, rumors and gossip. However, super delegates -- party leaders and activists -- are far more knowledgeable about candidates and issues and the electoral process in general.
Besides, as I recall, New Mexico was not exactly a landslide for Hilary, was it?

I wonder why Richardson waited this long? He might have been very helpful to Obama with the Hispanic voters in Texas
Waiting this long makes me wonder if Richardson was trying to determine who the "winner" was going to be.
He will be out of office in 2010 - NM limits the governor to 2 terms.
Is he looking for a job and wanted to back the winning candidate?
