We have been witnessing their slow death, much the way most of the blacksmiths pretty much disappeared at the turn of the last century.
Back in the 70s I used to sell yellow page advertising for SW Bell, when it was part of the former ATT. At the time they were test marketing a way to advertise "on-line". There were 5 test cities, if I remember correctly Buffalo NY was one of the first. The idea was to put free computers in every customers' home to replace the Yellow Pages. It was supposed to be cheaper than the printing/paper costs of YP production and increase advertising revenues. That way, prices and sales could be added to the current directory ads. When it came time to launch in Austin, a class action suit was brought by several major newspapers saying it would put them out of business, hence blocking one of the first "internet birthings".
Shortly thereafter the Carter administration disbanded the old AT&T under the anti-trust laws.

I wonder to what extent these papers are killing themselves by offering their content for free online?
The crux of this article seems to be that if you have a business model for making money by doing investigative reporting and selling it, now is the time to try it out.
It might also be a good time to be making things like the kindle.

You can say that again !

Radio Free Europe was closed, (a radio station run by the CIA), and yesterday or before yesterday, one of their members of Romanian section called by pseudonym Raluca Bogdan (or her look alike), was arrested in New York, probably on phony charges, of trying to seduce a 16 year old boy. That she was more then 25 years old , that's for sure, but if she would have given her real age out, she would have never find a job as a mathematics teacher in the New York educational system.
I suspect that the 16 year old, didn't want his daddy to find out that he was really with a man somewhere... and not with her So much for life in Americaâ;¦.
