You are probably too young to remember what actually happened, but you could have watched the movie at least. It was the US that destabilized officially neutral Cambodia to the point that Khmer Rouge could gain a foothold to destroy the country.

I never saw the movie but I read a biographical book called "To Destroy You is No Loss" about a young girl who lived through it. Anyone who escaped that H*ll hole during that time was amazing!"
In my opinion that book should be required reading in schools today.

It is one thing to read about or hear of 2 million deaths. It is quite another to see the depiction of it. The movie of Dith Pran (The Killing Fields) was a moving and emotionally wrenching experience. For him to survive that horror and speak out against it makes him a true American hero.
Ironically the actor who portrayed him in the movie, Haing Ngor (who was a Cambodian doctor) was also robbed close to his apartment; but he was killed during the robbery.
