If this war was a war against your country and not a war of aggression I imagine it would be a different picture, there would likely be new members joining up in record numbers and that would have helped prevent the present situation. The opposition to this war and also the lack of forethought to the invasion of Iraq has caused a dangerous situation for the troops on the ground, troops are like anything else if you push them to hard (which I feel is being done now) your performance and longevity will decline, lets hope that no one does anything stupid in the next little while for the sake of the troops.

The war is so unpopular the military is having trouble even meeting their low recruitment goals. And with the bad PR on how our wounded and ill soldiers are treated, why would our young men and women enlist? Patriotism works most when fighting a just fight, not one so illegetimate as the Iraq debacle.

It's a sad tale being told when the people RESPONSIBLE for the readiness of the military are stating in plain language that they have failed at their job. Yet they SEEM concerned. So, one must wonder, WHY did they fail? It could reasonably be argued that the failure is a direct result of improper behavior of those higher in the command chain. Right up to GWB.

And the "come home with honor" deal? The persons on the ground need have no concern on that score. They went, they served with honor, they came home. All fine. The BIG problem isn't with the "honor" of the troops, it's with the top command structure. THEY don't feel as though they can retire "with honor" unless they can claim they have "won." Whatever that means. Since there can NEVER be a win in a war that has no defined enemy, and no way to determine when the enemy has lost, we will NEVER be able to retire from the "war" on terror with "honor" for those at the top.

There is no such thing as a peace dividend because there is always a war waiting in the wings. It is the natural state of nations. Bush Sr was wrong for cutting back, as was Clinton, as was GWB. Now we see the true cost of the peace dividend.

All this will lead to is the firing (er, retirement) of honorable commanding officers and the diversion of still more money to private contractors. We may have an all-volunteer army, but let's not forget they are only half of the armed forces we have in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Not much attention on Blackwater, et al, lately, but watch for the percentage of U.S. forces overseas to shift markedly to private contract mercenaries.

Doesn't look like the ChickenHawks are doing a very good job of managing our military...and all along I figured they were proficient at war mongering, guess I was wrong on this one.
