McCain Booed At Martin Luther King Speech: Watch The Video »
Posted By ybdogsct 1 year, 7 months ago in NewsSpeaking at a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s death, John McCain said Friday he was wrong to initially oppose a government holiday in memory of the civil rights leader. The comments were met with audible boos and interruptions from many in the audience, as he apologized for repeatedly opposing the creation of a hol

The problem is this isn't the first time McCain made a mistake and had to apologize for it.

"On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, 'I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live.'"
http://archive.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2...
"Richard Quinn, McCain's chief South Carolina advisor in 2000, who edits a racially controversial magazine called Southern Partisan called Nelson Mandela a 'terrorist' and King a man 'whose role in history was to lead his people into a perpetual dependence on the welfare state, a terrible bondage of body and soul.' In another piece, Quinn said of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, 'What better way to reject politics as usual than to elect a maverick like David Duke?'"

In the 2000 presidential campaign, McCain reversed himself on the confederate flag first calling it 'a symbol of racism and slavery' but then pandering the very next day by calling it a 'symbol of heritage.'
McCain campaigned in Alabama for George Wallace Jr., a
popular speaker the Council of Conservative Citizens, whose mission statement reads:
'We believe that the U.S. derives from and is an integral part of European civilization and the European people and that the American people and government should remain European in their composition and character. We also oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called "affirmative action" and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the European-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races.'"

I would gladly accept his apology for elongating the occupation of Iraq 2 years from now. The problem is, think
of how many will die needlessly once the right thing finally happens and THEN he admits it.
Aren't we looking for leaders who make the right decision in the heat of the discussion?

Huffingtonpost is a ultra-liberal website that you numbskulls obviously love. He was a prisoner of war when MLK was killed. Every holiday declared costs the taxpayers an enormous amount. But then we can all afford it, right? Let's declare holidays for 365 days out of the year and see how long we last.

although I agree with you, I find it best that we open our minds to all sides. I wish we could get away from this 2 party fiasco.
Dr. Paul is a republican only for the race. http://politics.propeller.com/story/2008/04/04/...
I had to become the same to vote for him in the primaries. never in my life did I ever imagine being a republican. i will change my status depending on the outcome of the conventions.
it will be changed to NO PARTY AFFILLIATION! I can't stand the far right or the liberal left.
Dr. Paul is the only deserving candidate for the position of President. the other 3 are literally the same on both sides of the fence.

BLUENOTE:
"Huffingtonpost is a ultra-liberal website that you numbskulls obviously love."
How obtuse can you possibly be? Huffington Post did little more than host a video of McCain's speech. Huffington Post did not pass judgement on McCain's speech themselves; they were simply reporting the judgement and boos that the audience passed on McCain's speech. This is evident from the video clip. Only a profound fool would persist in a state of denial, as you do, in the face of VIDEO EVIDENCE.
BLUENOTE:
"He was a prisoner of war when MLK was killed."
McCain was released from Vietnam on March 14, 1973. His vote against commemorating MLK day wasn't until 10 YEARS LATER in 1983. Are you claiming that in those 10 years McCain had never heard of MLK? You're either inconceivably naive or McCain is inconceivably dense -- or maybe it's a little of both. If McCain really didn't know who MLK was (unlikely), he should have abstained from voting.
Pathetic.

John McCain was shot down in 1967.
He was released in 1973.
He was elected to the House in 1982
He voted against the MLK holiday in 1983
Today he said that was a mistake.
Asked on Monday why he shifted his position and later supported a state measure creating a holiday, McCain told reporters that he "learned (that King) was a transcendent figure in American history. He deserved to be honored and that I thought it was appropriate to do so."

"Let's declare holidays for 365 days out of the year and see how long we last."
It's what the Liberals and their welfare-sucking constituency is aiming for. Every day of the year a holiday, honoring some malcontent, or some racially-diversified celebrity or some such crap. They won't be happy until the rest of us join them in their lazy, work-free days of political correctness, sucking off the government teat and living off the government dole. It's called Communism and it's coming to a united states near you.
One thing they haven't thought of, however. After all the companies and businesses have been shut down, the wealthy people stripped of their money, and the citizens are all collecting welfare, who's going to finance all of it?
(crickets....)
Waiting for an answer.

So you still oppose it, you and bluenote are bigots.
Why not remove Lincoln's Birthday too?
After all he was a pro-black president and this is a white country. Right??
Oh, his birthday is ok because it is under "President's Day"
and that day is really for Washington and car dealers..
Idiot!
This is a nation of heroes. It is about American pride.
MLK began the painful task of building pride for an entire race that America had degraded and left out.
You want it all to yourself, but we don't honor cross burners.
If your hero would just remove his hood we could see who he is!
Let's instead keep giving $18billion tax cuts to the needy oil companies (OUR TAX DOLLARS), let's keep cleaning up big business pollution sites (OUR TAX DOLLARS) and let's keep killing Iraquis in the middle of their civil war, with OUR TAX DOLLARS..You are a pair of blind hateful fools!

"Every holiday declared costs the taxpayers an enormous amount."
--Why, bluenote? Why'd you have to go there? Now, did you whip out the accounting books last month when you found out we were gonna bail out Bear Stearns? Huh? Of course ya didn't. Have you reach for the calculator every time Daddy Warbucks starts throwing a tantrum and threatening to invade even more countries unless he gets another hundred billion plus so we can continue babysitting Iraqi oil? Exactly...We didn't think so.
Anyway, your petty and ridiculous post reminded me that here in DC where I live, now is the time of year we locals gather to watch in amazement as bovine, hideously-garbed wingjobs from all over the U.S. stampede the National Mall so that they can all stand around cluelessly, licking themselves and, drooling over the latest multi-million dollar homage to war, slaughter, and death. Cons are never short on funds to blow stuff up or help out their wealthy friends. Astounding.

So much for forgiveness when a person makes an error and admits it. These booers I suspect are the free speech advocates that actually hate free speech unless it supports their way of thinking. I don't particularly like McCain or the Dems. possible selections. It is painfully obvious that there is not a clear all around good candidate for president.

--I think you have them confused with right wingers. You see, neocons are the ones who want to exercise their right to freedom of speech without being criticized or penalized in any way. Sadly, many of them still do not realize that freedom of speech is a two-way street. Say what you want. Just be mature enough to take your medicine when people express their disapproval.

We all know Mccain has ball bearing on his ass & will turn any way the wind blows.
That stated, at the risk of being called whatever, I believe the MLK holiday was just made for political reasons.
There is no other national holiday named for an individual other than Columbus Day, which is being changed to exploration day or something like that.
Washington & Lincoln's birthdays have become the generic "President's Day" - I believe a better name for MLK,s bday would be something along the lines of "American Equality Day"
The continuing use of MLK Day is an affront to all the other American patriots who have made the sacrifice but are not individually recognized

--I wouldn't go so far as to say it was "just" for political reasons. For one thing, civil disobedience is, by its very nature political. Sometimes I wonder how we Americans got to be as cynical and mistrustful as it seems we (and I include myself) have. But as I say that, I'm reminded that I never in a million years would have imagined that we'd be split down the middle by party over an issue like global warming. Science. Unbelievable.
But I digress. I don't think the King holiday is *so* remarkable. What we now refer to as "President's Day" is still officially Washington's birthday and the "National Day of Service" is just a nickname for Martin Luther King Day. This reminds me that, unlike those who are terrified of losing their religion if the office Christmas party is referred to as a "holiday party", black folks have got their priorties straight.

To have made such a mistake in judgment forty years ago is one thing.
The sad part is that after 40 years of history, with M.L.K. Jr.'s lasting legacy of nonviolent victories over the terrorists of the 1960s, McCain still does not understand the relative power of diplomacy and nonviolent approaches to solving human problems as opposed to the use of war to blow things up.

I think Jesus still has a day for Him. But the Libs are working on nullifying that as well. Drop the old white man knock on McCain. I hope to be one one day. Don't any of you have parents that you respect their wisdom that they have aquired through experience? I thought you Libs were for equal treatment for everyone. Or is it for everyone that you agree with?
Why is my previous post at -5? What point(s) was I off on? You liberals are into mutual masturbation on the most idiotic stuff but I say something and you don't disect it, debate it, you just dismiss it.

yb, McCain was dealing with the economy of AZ. Holidays are expensive and you have to be exclusive. Who else get's a named holiday for themselves? Lincoln, Kennedy(s), Washington, Reagan, Elvis, Dimaggio? It wasn't anti-black. Huffington is a HUGE liberal and I am sad that you can't acknowledge that.

"yb, McCain was dealing with the economy of AZ. Holidays are expensive and you have to be exclusive."
If that's the case, then perhaps Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day, and St. Patrick's Day ought to be eliminated. Of all the holidays used for commemoration, MLK is far from being the least deserving of a holiday in his name.
Furthermore, you ignore the fact that McCain has ALREADY admitted it was a mistake to vote against this legislation. FYI, you are futilely defending McCain's vote AFTER McCain has already conceded a lost argument.
BLUENOTE:
"Who else get's a named holiday for themselves? Lincoln, Kennedy(s), Washington"
Washington DOES have a holiday. It's called Presidents Day--and Lincoln is often celebrated on that day too.

IT IS A VIDEO CLIP. There is nothing "liberal" about videotaping a speech and showing it in full. Why is this so difficult for you to comprehend? You are so consumed by your own labels and categories that you would deny COMPLETE VIDEO EVIDENCE seen by YOUR OWN EYES.

Ah, but obviously you do not remember that Arianna Huffington used to be a conservative campaigning for Bob Dole in 1996.
Google it. It's a fact.
You know what changed her mind? The run up to the 2000 election. All I can say is good for her! Too bad the rest of the country didn't wake up in time!

I don't understand why we can't have a day of recognition without giving all the banks and government off. I think on days like this the students should be in school learning about what the day is to commemorate. In our present system everybody is just at home playing video games.

ace, I didn't use The M word as you mean it so backoff. You know that but you are acting as if I am name calling, Numbskull was out of line but why no direct argument other than coat tailing on (yb) who doesn't know the history of President's day. At what point do we say you are a hero but we can not have another holiday designated? Go gather around your holiday tree and forget the Ten Commandments in public but get specifically sensitive on MLK. It must be so simple in your world.

Are you serious? Here's the evidence of "the history of President's day" ONCE AGAIN.
http://www.infoplease.com/spot/washington1.html
According to the federal government, the holiday observed on the third Monday in February is officially Washington's Birthday. But many Americans believe that this holiday is now called 'Presidents' Day,' in honor of both Presidents Washington and Lincoln."
From the U.S. Office of Personnel Management:
http://www.opm.gov/operating_status_schedules/f...
"Monday, February 18, 2006: Washington's Birthday
This holiday is designated as "Washington's Birthday" in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law."

That's what I love about Fox. They pronounce their slanted claims all day. They use simple headlines and big print because they know that dumb and selfish people are their target audience. They are not there to inform or educate, they are there to support an agenda (that means get people to follow what they want)..YOU are a classic example.

As I sit here reading the comments on this blog, I realize that things in America will NEVER change when the race issue comes to the table. It's really disheartening to know that people in America are still stuck on stupid about race. If Bill O'Reilly and the likes make comments, African-Americans are supposed to let it ride and not be offended. But, if Al Sharpton and the likes make comments, African-Americans are supposed to denounce the things they say. Such a double standard! Funny though, we dictate to other nations how they are supposed to be CIVIL towards each other...and yet, we're not CIVIL towards each other. What a HYPOCRITICAL society this country is! I think that Americans should learn TOLERANCE in their own nation before they decide to tell the rest of the world how to think, live, and just be. We have no right to tell ANYONE how to behave, until we can behave like CIVILIZED PEOPLE towards EACH OTHER!

The people who booed McCain are racists, right? Isn't that how it works now? If you disagree with someone of another color then you are racist. If you are white and you don't like Obama, you are racist, right? If you are black and you don't like McCain, you are racist, right?

the 'rules' on proper race etiquette are gelatinous, from what I can tell
a personal story. whenever I'm a passenger in someone's car, I lock it without thinking
I did this in front of 4 black guys who didn't like it, sat on my friends car a half hour later and told him, 'you tell that white boy if we want in this car we'll just flip it over'
I wasn't there, or they may have been inclined to start sh!t over nothing, I may have been beaten up who knows
but it makes an excellent example of the verbal race thing
there are chasms between what is meant, what is said, and what is heard
if people wish to fill those gaps with racial conclusions, one act, one word ['typical' 'majority']can raise hackles
a man says a foolish thing like 'typical' when talking about 'white' behavior, and suddenly, AHA!, he's a racist, white mama or no.
a guy spouts a foolish piece of silliness like 'nappy headed ho's' and then he's the posterboy for the KKK
rules?
there are none
and I still lock cars
