Great article, radio--researching all of this must have kept you busy for a while.
It never fails to surprise me that those who would censor miss the point that their reasons for censoring are no different than others over the years; the reasons are always based on the ever-changing contextual standards. What would have been acceptable 100 or even 50 years ago isn't seen that way today, and similarly, what might have been considered obscene then is often laughable today.
The obvious problem with censorship is that those who decide what is and is not acceptable can never be entirely objective.
But there's a more insidious issue: the most dangerous ideas are the ones that are kept underground, where they can never be kept from spreading but can't be openly debated.

    I can't remember any Democrats talking about censoring what can be discussed on talk radio. But if they have, I'd be against them. I've always been in favor of honest and open discussion.

    I am against all censorship, including silencing voices I disagree with. Who are these democrats who want to censor radio? I would not agree. Censorship has mutated though, Federal Government has not been involved overtly for some time. (Except perhaps Iraq related reporting). Censorship is now conducted controlling the market. Clear Channel for instance owning vast majority of radio stations decides what you hear and do not. And they do have a political agenda, as does Mao Mart, who decides what will be available to you on their shelves. This slippery slope exists, it is difficult to condemn as a man has a right to decide what products he would like to sell in his "store". But if a giant corporation that controls more than 70 percent of a market decides it will not sell a product then it becomes the new form of censorship. Clear Channel will be discussed in detail in the 3rd installment of this article- the 90s and 00s.

      Censorship is required for certain age groups. The Canterbury Tales were mentioned. I remember a scene where someone kissed a ladies nether eye in the dark. Great stuff for kids right. A lot of rap needs to be labeled for what it is and not sold to just anybody. Other than age restrictions there should be none.
      What wasn't mentioned was the censorship that happened to the radio and TV a while back. The Democrats tried resurrecting it again recently. It sounds nice to say that every political talk must be counterbalanced by opposing views. However in reality that means no one gets to talk. The reality would be that every group would line up to have an opinion different than the last several on a topic. That forced the radio and TV to only run adds. Censorship at its worst. Everyone gets shut down. Are they going to do it with politically correct talk or hate speech? Republican hate speech is what Democrats say and visa versa.

        Parents should be responsible for what types of content they permit their children to consume. Not Government. Not Corporate entities such as Clear Channel. This is a reflection of the social ill that parents don't spend enough quality time with their kids. They want someone else to take care of it. The question becomes who? Who is wise and objective enough? No One! Only you can decide what is appropriate for your children. What child would have an interest in reading Canterbury tales? (Unless they were told they weren't allowed to). What child would have any idea what a ladies "nether eye" is? If the "child" is old enough to understand what is being talked about, they are probably capable of reading The Canterbury Tales. (It was required reading in my high school English Lit. class) If it is in your personal library, would your children be interested in reading it? I doubt it. It's difficult, because of language changes.
