German Hillbilly!...
I'm a Norwegian Hillbilly and I used to say .."Vat tsar (for that there) scaredid the Var out of me..it dids, yahz!.."
But now, after being Americanized but still a Hillbilly, I now say "It scares the shxt out of me."
Not as poetic or colorful but just as effective.

    I think it is actually a shorter form of the word tarnation.

      I'm not sure, but it's probably related to "knock the tar out of" which is naval slang from back in the wooden sailing ships heyday.
      "Tarnation" I think is a bastardized form of "eternal damnation".

        Could be. I was told by an older Religious man one time that it was not 'Christian like' and very dangerous in the 'Eye's of the Lord' to say damnxtion so instead people would say tarnation instead. Kinda like damn becomes drun or drat and etc. But who knows.
