Comments for Santorum flip flops on McCain »
Posted By ybdogsct 1 year, 8 months ago in NewsFew Republicans were more caustic when it came to John McCain's candidacy in the GOP presidential primary than former Sen. Rick Santorum. He castigated McCain on the issues - immigration, global warming, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research, to name just a few. Today, however, Santorum makes the case in the Philadelphia Inquirer for why co

Not more than a few months ago, Republicans hurled insults at McCain for his betrayal of Republicans, particularly with regards to social conservative issues. But politics makes for strange bedfellows. Now that McCain has virtually tied up the Republican nomination, some of the most ardent anti-McCain bashers have flip flopped to become vocal McCain supporters.
This thread is for exposing the most egregious and the most laughable flip floppers.
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080421/perlstein
"Back when the Republican presidential race was still competitive, the insults against John McCain from leading conservative voices were extravagant. Since then, they have had to reverse course. Such are the strange McCain contortions Republicans have been forcing themselves into in recent weeks. "
I invite anyone to help expose the hypocrisy of these flip floppers. Here, I'll start.

RICK SANTORUM BEFORE:
http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics...
"On social conservative issues, you point to me one time John McCain ever took the floor of the United States Senate to talk about a social conservative issue. It never happened. I mean, this is a guy who says he believes in these things, but I can tell you, inside the room, when we were in these meetings, there was nobody who fought harder not to have these votes before the United States Senate on some of the most important social conservative issues, whether it's marriage or abortion or the like. He always fought against us to even bring them up, because he was uncomfortable voting for them.
McCain looks at the world through the eyes of the New York Times editorial board. If you're a Republican, if you're a Republican in the broadest sense, there is only one place to go right now and that's Mitt Romney."

RICK SANTORUM AFTER:
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/17966064...
"Anyone who has heard me talk about the presidential race over the last few months knows that I've had, shall we say, some serious reservations about John McCain's candidacy.
McCain is clearly the candidate with the capacity, judgment, experience and will to confront America's enemies. And, yes, McCain has been a thorn in the side of many of us who supported important appropriations earmarks for our states. But he's always objected with principled consistency."

You're so right on with this, and to be completely honest with you, i couldn't believe how the people on Propeller flipped around so fast in order to justify McCain, just the way Santorum has.
My self formed opinion is, they will vote for anyone as long as there is an R beside their name rather than cross a party line. I know a lot of cons, and crossing a party line is NOT an option.

Well, to be fair not2needy, we Christian Cosnervatives dont see politics as an option.
Its our religion.
In our hierarchy of Sainted Ones, Ronald Reagan represents the second comin of Christ.
Ronnie is responsible for the sunshine and the song birds!! TWEET TWEET!
Goerge W. Bush is liek our Martin Luther, represents the official break from spirituality to gettin our minds right bout politics.
McCain is a tough one. We positioned him as a Judas for bout 8 years or so. But lately, hes been recantin at the alter of 'gettin his mind right.
So we Christian Cosnervatives, bein a forgivin kind are considerin bringin Johnny back into the fold.

N2N the cons hate change. It is the essence of all conservative thought- no change. Keep established social orders, institutions, and organizations.
They are a lock-step group and they want everyone to march to their masters orders. Progressives are the opposite. They question the ways of the past, never seem to be marching in lock step, as the only things they have in common is a high regard for individual rights, social justice, and personal freedom. Progressives tend to look for new solutions to problems rather than rely on the past methods. Santorum is among the nations leading imbeciles.

"McCain's baggage: To assuage his guilt over the "Keating 5" scandal, the unconstitutional McCain-Feingold bill was proposed and is now law.
And then there was the infamous Gang of 14 to prevent the Senate from reversing the unconstitutional practice (rule) of requiring 60 votes for approval of court nominees.
Oh, and the hundreds of appearances on the Sunday TV shows trashing fellow Republicans, not voting for Bush's tax cuts, and the most egregious of all, the arrogance of trying to ram a back room immigration/amnesty deal down our throats.

I have been hearing about the sharp elbow jabs that will come up when we get to the general election.
There has been a lot of talk that Obama can not play basketball with the big boys.
The litany of his faults keeps repeating itself.
There will be no need (and I think it would be wrong) to "Swiftboat" McCain and I think Obama will nip any attempts in the bud.
There is a plethora of elbow stabs directed at McCain by his own party. No need to reach back to when he was 8 years old. A 10 year window would provide a new quote every day attributed to the heroes of the Republican party.
It hardly seems fair.

Okay ybdogsct, now where are the links providing the hypocracy? We didn't want McCain, but now we have him, just like a lot of you dems don't want Obama, or you don't want Hillary. But when one or the other is named the candidate, you are going to rally around the official Democratic Candidate, because you feel a Dem will do a better job than a Rep. And we believe the opposite. So while McCain may not be who we want, we know he is infinitely better than the 4th Grade Class President or the Bitter Old Crone your party has dregged up for you to vote for.

There's quite a profound distinction. The disagreement between Democrats (Obama vs. Hillary) PALES in comparison to the viciousness with which McCain was disowned by his own party--not just this year, but also during the 2000 primaries. McCain's patriotism, competence, sanity, and even marital fidelity were called into question.
The anti-McCain muckraking was so intense that Republican leaders ( Santorum, Romney, etc.) and commentators (Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, etc.) openly admitted that McCain was "not just bad for the Republican Party; he was bad for America as well" -- that they would rather see a Democratic CIC than a McCain presidency.
Now these VERY SAME Republicans openly embrace McCain as if they had supported him all along. Not only that, they openly ridicule Democrats for the conflict within the Democratic Party (between Obama and Hillary), yet ignore how much greater the conflict within the Republican Party (anti-McCain vs. pro-McCain) was.

I don't think you are right about that. I've seen plenty of comments by many of the people you quoted, saying they are still disappointed they got stuck with McCain. But he's so much better than what the Dems put up. If your options are all bad, you pick the best of the worst. Otherwise you end up with the worst of the worst. McCain will do just fine in November. We will begrudgingly vote for him knowing that at least we are saving the country from the horror of a Hillary or Obama presidency.

Why is Santorum even relevant? The guy cheated the taxpayers into paying for private school for his kids, equates homosexuality with "man on dog" sex, was wrong about Terry Schiavo and worst of all believes that the little kids of Boston who were raped by their priests deserved it because of the Librul leanings of the northeast.
The guy is like some crazy old uncle who lives in the attic, or is that McCain.

He is just like all the rest when he gets into office he will do what he wants. His state is in economic chaos over illegal immigration issues. IE hospitals, entitlements are over used by illegals. Homes along the border are being trashed and robbed by some coming across the borders. All the while John McCain along with Ted Kennedy is writing a bill to give these same illegals citizenship and privileges other immigrants have had to wait to obtain for years. Politically correct for votes so he was in favor of illegal aliens, sure it's the compassionate thing to do. John McCain bends with the wind. Every time during the debates he looked into the camera and says I have to tell the truth even if it's not popular I felt the need to barf."
