FTA:
"Starting Monday, the effects of the stimulus will begin to reach millions of households across our country," Bush said Friday in remarks on the South Lawn of the White House.
The Internal Revenue Service had been saying direct deposits wouldn't start until next Friday. Bush said paper checks would begin going out on May 9, a week earlier than previously announced.
Don't spend it all in one place!

"It's galling to think that taxpayers' stimulus checks will be lining the pockets of OPEC. The sad truth is that the average American family will spend almost their entire stimulus check on higher gas prices this year," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., chairman of the Joint Economic Committee of Congress."
He's got a point here. So why won't he let us drill in our own backyard?

I think I may be "queen for a day." Our real estate property value tanked, but our property taxes had just increased so much that the rebate doesn't even pay 20% of the increase, so we are *****ed. The school where I teach hasn't given us a raise in 5 years (but jobs are so scarce I stay). And my little "green" car now costs almost $50 to fill up. That meter should be moving!

Wait... This is all so confusing. Our President is telling us not to worry and to just go shopping (which, if my memory serves me, is one of the main reasons our economy is in the toilet in the first place). How can we stimulate the economy with checks for six hundred bucks if many of us now owe more money on our homes than we can pay off in multiple lifetimes? Neocon economics is HAAAAAARD. ;-(

The IRS will use the 2007 tax return to determine eligibility and calculate the basic amount of the payment. In most cases, the payment will equal the amount of tax liability on the return with a maximum amount of $600 for individuals ($1,200 for taxpayers who file a joint return) and a minimum of $300 for individuals ($600 for taxpayers who file a joint return).
Even those who have little or no tax liability may qualify for a minimum payment of $300 ($600 if filing a joint return) if their tax return reflects $3,000 or more in qualifying income.

Tax cuts and tax rebates are fake, when they are not matched by spending cuts.
What is spent, must be paid for, by a household or a government.
Deficit spending is only defered taxation. It is charging the bill to the next administration.
Keep the money; you will have to send it back, with interest.

CRYMTYPHON--Oh, foo. Someone always has to come along and use the voice of reason and spoil our flights of fancy. Buzz-kill!
Of course, most people I know will be paying taxes or credit cards with it anyway.
I remember when the so-called "surplus" was upon us, and I showed a class how it was being calculated, and they determined for themselves that there was no actual surplus--just a bunch of executive and legislative hot air--and the government was still ultimately in financial trouble. Now it's in much bigger trouble.

Well, I am suppose to get back part of what I have already paid-in in Fed. taxes, just won't get it back until August sometime! By then it will just go into my saving for next years taxes. I don't have CC debt, thank goodness.
It would have been better to have given everyone who earned less than $75k a tax credit of $500!
Thanks not2needy.

I don't know one person that is going shopping with their check. My two girlfriends who were going to blow it are now saying they are going to have to put it back and use it to buy gas. We are saving ours just in case things get worse.
This may help the economy VERY little and it is putting us in more debt. Hmmmm... not so sure this was a very good idea. I would have liked the tax credit better.
For those it helps I'm very happy for you.
I believe this will hurt us more than help us. Think of the interest we will have to pay on it to the one it was borrowed from.

I said they would jack up the prices of gasoline right about the time those checks were being sent out. Everybody will be giving that money right back to the government via the oil companies. Now how does an American war ship firing on two un-identifiable water craft in the Persian Gulf constitute jacking up gasoline prices? I can hardly believe this runaway greed. I remember my father getting mad because gas would go up one cent. We've been duped with american idol, dancing with the stars, and reality t.v. Folks we need to get our country back!

The rebate checks are comparable to giving a starving child a pacifier and telling them it's a bowl of Lucky Charms.
The illusion of unbridled growth and opportunity is over.
For the typical American it is time to pay the piper and dine with the Devil.
Hope us typical Americans have deep pockets for the band and a real long spoon to get to the food.

They're giving us a cash gift! but...everything is going to cost you more, so where is the gift? what a joke! and after everyone spends their little piddly 'gift' the prices will still remain high...all this is is just a tiny bit of vasceline as the big long screw continues.
I'm poor so I'm putting the $ away for a 'just in case'
I have no CC debt and need nothing new, guess I should feel pretty lucky. I'd love to just spend this freely, but in my situation that would be foolish.

Here's a typical Texas Two Step- Give you $600 dollars, but it costs you $60 dollars to fill your tank.
Bush knows the average voter will not really think things out. Let's see:
Bush = Big Oil = $3.50/gallon = Bush, corporations, wealthy elite getting rich (world bank)
Give them the $600 dollars, they're stupid enough to vote again for McCain this time. All we have to do is smear the only good candidate Obama. They're so dumb they won't even think about the real issues. We'll get Charlie Gibson to keep that the focus during the debate. We own the media with filth money and what we stole from the US Treasury. We have some dirt on Gibson. He'll do anything we want him to do. We have the average blue collar worker brainwashed on religious issues that we frankly don't really care about. Besides we murder in Iraq so who say's we are religious anyway.

Sad that an ignorant persons vote can be bought for a tank of gas, that is subsequently going to go back into the pocket of the person who gave you the money in the first place.
Not saying this money came out of Bushies pocket, but in an indirect way, some of it will find it's way into his pocket if spent at the pumps.

it's a ridiculous idea
I wonder how much of this money will stimulate the 'underground' economy, the one created by the outlaw of certain non-addictive herbal home remedies?
also, there's an elitist assumption that the stimulus money will just be extra spending money for people, that they won't need to sock it away or just pay those big company bill payments or medical bills
a slap in the face to the poor
but as slaps go, I'll take a few ben-jah-men's in the schnozz over the usual ones offered
