When Wright's words were challenged in a Hannity and Colmes interview, he laid claim to the theological legacy of a black seminary professor by the name of James Cone, who wrote:
"Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy."
That is unbridled hatred, bigotry, and racism. And nobody's grandmother who's scared of an annoying black panhandler is going to change that.
You face two problems.
1. Reality is not optional.
2. Words have meaning.
You want play-doh, go to Toys-R-Us.

  Let's not forget that Wright also served in the armed forces. In fact, his goddaughter just recently deployed to Iraq.

      It's official. You're clearly illiterate. Let me say it again: Jeremiah Wright HIMSELF is a Vietnam War veteran. Upon completing his service and returning home, he was denied equal rights and liberties -- the very American rights and liberties he thought he had been fighting for when he served in Vietnam.
      While I can't condone everything Wright has said, I can understand his frustration and anger. When was the last time YOU gave your life fighting for freedoms that were denied to you upon YOUR return home?

      You obviously have not listened to his speech. I don't say this lightly or often, but as I was listening to him yesterday, I was wondering whether there would be anybody stupid enough to condemn him for his speech.     I measure opposition to slavery by a black person by their opposition to ALL slavery, including & especially the black-on-black slavery in Africa that continues to this day. The notion that black-black slavery is ok, but white-black slavery is evil is a purely racist contention.
    That leaves pretty much every black leader in America--as far as I know--in the moral dust that clutters my rearview mirror. But if you know of a black leader in America who has spoken out against b-b slavery in Africa, by all means...I WANT to be wrong about this.
    If you can't, know that I wear your contempt as a badge of honor for the hope of wanting ALL BLACK PEOPLE free of the scourge of slavery. If that hope makes me a supremacist, so be it. But I'd like to hear it from a black slave in Africa who shares my hope as opposed to someone in America who frankly knows-experientially-nothing about slavery.
    Again, two immovable hurdles:
    1. Reality is not optional.

        You're kidding right?
        For years all we heard about was South Africa's apartheid, ie, legalized discrimination against blacks by whites. And during the entire period of demonstrations, boycotts, etc., that ultimately ended up with the dissolution of apartheid, here are two things not once mentioned:
        1. the dozens if not hundreds of blacks murdered by the ANC to keep them from gaining power in post-apartheid Union of S. Africa; and
        2. the black-on-black slave trade that has continued from before Columbus set sail to this very day.
        As you will no doubt condemn silent Southerners, and rightly so, silence amounts to acceptance, so you don't get to paint with the broad stroke here. Unless of course you're willing to let silent Southerners off the hook for looking the other way.
        Life is choices.

        Gen. Robert E. Lee never endorsed slavery, and freed his own upon inheriting them. So perhaps a discussion of endorsement is in order, just to make sure we're on the same page.

        I don't understand just how this discussion got to REL but neither he nor his family owned slaves. General Robert E. Lee never owned any slaves. Lee came from a very poor family. What money the family may have had Lee's father squandered. Lee's wife had two slaves when he married her. These slaves were freed but continued to live with the Lee's until their death.

      1. Perception is reality. The statist have mastered the art of altering reality by means of controlling perception through television and other mass media, aka the 30 second sound bytes.
      2. Taking a few second sound byte and then analysing it for 5 minutes, mixed in with a certain politcal spin, adding a dash of half-truths, combines with some witty denigrations, also has meaning.

      First you should try understanding the so cal black on black slavery you speak of. The enslaved person is so until his debt is paid upon that time he/she is free to do as he/she pleases. The person enslaved has an option, they can pay their debts or render their services. The conversation is about whites enslaving blacks i don't see what black on black slavery has to do with any of this. So if your story is true about black on black slavery, you are saying this makes white on black slavery OK?

    Both Wright and Cone subsribe to what they call an "Afro-centric" gospel, and they say it is in response to what they call a "Euro-centric" gospel.
    There neither is nor can be a gospel that is centered around any nataionality, race, ethnic group, or any other subset of the human race, save Jewry, for:
    "The gospel is the power of God for salvation, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile."
    That is the core absolute of orthodox Christianity from which any and all deviation is heresy. That said, I discard out of hand any representation of the gospel that claims to be race-oriented. And yes I get that many so-called white Christians who took that path ended up with the wrong eternal zip code.

  What you fail to realize w/comments like Wright's "That is unbridled hatred, bigotry, and racism" is that IT'S AN INTEGRATED CHURCH!!!! One of his mentors happens to be White.
  Try to find the Bill Moyers interview w/Wright from a couple of nights ago. It should open your eyes a bit.

      Exactly WHY does it bear repeating? The man got him the job at that parish specifically to help integrate it. Apparently none of Wright's White members had a problem w/the sermon - the WHOLE sermon, not just the part blown way out of proportion. Apparently they didn't find his comments racist.

        It was a predominantly Black church in an integrated community. Wright was brought in to help integrate it.
        The divisiveness isn't coming from Wright, who integrated the church. It's coming from those who didn't hear the sermon & are just taking bits & pieces to support their claims of his "unpatriotic" behavior.
