Is he working for someone else's campaign now, because he certainly isn't helping Obama?

Well if anyone takes the time to listen to more than just the snippets of his sermons you will find that he has not really said anything that should hurt Obama. If you listen to the whole sermon you will find that he was preaching exactly the opposite of what the news channels and Rush say he was.

Was this before or after he cursed America? He has made remarks that would be inappropriate regardless of the content of the rest of his sermon.

There is nothing inappropriate about pointing out that you CONs have hijacked this country and taken it down the road of un-righteousnous.

            >>Was this before or after he cursed America?

Do you even know WHAT he was saying? I'll give you a brief synopsis:

He was discussing the US's treatment of Native Americans. He was also discussing its treatment of Japanese Americans during WW-II, its support for Apartheid South Africa, its dealings with despots & tyrants around the world under the guise of "fighting Communism" which hurt or killed hundreds of thousand if not millions of innocents, its treatment of Black Americans from Slavery through segregation & institutionalized racism, and its allowance of the suffering & death of INNOCENTS in this country & abroad through its policies or indifference.

If you have a problem with him condemning anyone for those actions, then the blood & suffering of the innocents are as much on your head as on the heads of those whose policies resulted in the pain, suffering & death of innocents.

Condemnation is the province of God, not Man. It is God who will judge those who judge others. It is fine to bear witness to the atrocities of our government, a patriot and Christ-like act. It is NOT Christ-like, patriotic, or humble and obedient to the commandments of our Savior to scream "God damn America" from your pulpit. I have seen here no argument to refute this.

You're right, "Condemnation is the province of God, not Man."

God has also said that if you do certain things, you will be damned. Wright was pointing out what we, as a nation, have done which is leading to our damnation, as a nation.

So he did, then went beyond his righteousness into the realm of arrogance and blasphemy.

Dropkick, it was definitely after America allowed itself to abide laws and practices that were damning unto itself; ask which ones were those, like you don't know. How many murders, rapes, thefts and and untold stories of law enforcement and court sanctioned atrocities has gone on without remedy? Don't get to righteous, you may be asked to throw the first stone. It is folly to focus on one man and not the ongoing practices he is talking about. You will still find Black Balling and Redlining going on today, even glass ceilings; women are currently trying to get a "Fair Pay" act passed in congress. What Reverend Wright says little to do with the state of America. Be glad that "W" in that Patriot Act, LOL, didn't take his/our 1st Amendment rights away so he couldn't voice an opinion, as the other rights are violated. Reverend did not commit a crime; but he did one good thing, bringing you out so I can tell you to fix the problem and Reverend Wright will go away.

tchef - As you may well know most of these guys don't want to hear what the REV has to say. They have found their bone and like a dog they are not giving it up for anything. Their interest is not understanding but polarization, separation and racism. They are raciest and they have found their voice at the behest of the Clinton's (bill Jackson remark). I don't think we should concern ourselves with these people they were never going to vote for him anyway. Their intent now is to convert as many to their raciest views as possible. These very people stood by a republican congress covered up the action of a known child molester and still voted for those members. To me they are in no way qualified to pass judgment on anyone. Rev Right was Quoting the president of Iran when he said "the chicken is coming home to rust" But if you haven't listen to the entire recordings you wouldn't know that.

A socialist is a Marxist by nature and therefore, has a bias against democracy. State ownership of the means of production is not democratic. You are a lying goose-stepping Libbot, blindly following the party line. Socialist want to steal from the successful to give to their political flunkies.

Well, it's no surprise that you don't understand the meanings of the words "Marxist", "socialist", or "democracy".

What is not democratic about nationalizing some critical industries? Answer is NOTHING. You've confused capitalism with democracy. One is political, the other economic, and they are not mutually exclusive in anyone's book but the greedheads in this country that you so shamelessly shill for.

Drop, my reason is because it is what good Americans do. We may not agree by defend the right to express themselves. Had he said, the Oklahoma bombing was the way, then we have a problem. Remember the Flag Burning flap during Viet Nam? America is still standing, isn't it. Reverend Wright made a conditional statement, for your information. The condition was that if America didn't get it right, then the obvious, don't expect God to Bless America, which is biblical, not to lie or deceive yourself but God Damn America. So, in the end, this is not about defending Reverend Wright, rather it is to educate you my fellow countryman. Do you feel educated now?

If you listen to the sermon he was warning his congregation about the dangers of seeking revenge. The chickens coming home to roost was a quote from an ambassador being made to Fox news the day after 9/11.

His name is Ambassador Edward Peck. And he is a retired, white, career U.S. diplomat who served 32-years in the U.S. Foreign Service and was chief of the U.S. mission to Iraq under Jimmy Carter

"Political commentary of that sort is inappropriate in the course of a sermon, in any case. Stick to the Bible"

The Bible's full of political commentary. Especially the Gospels and in particular Jesus's criticisms regarding the political structure of the time, one very similar to that of the US.

They really like to ignore those chapters and verses regarding throwing the money lenders out of the temple, don't they?

Heck, ALL OF REVELATIONS is political commentary on the Roman Empire.

Political commentary? That's more of a "you reap what you sow" type of thing - which IS a Biblical reference. As in, "They will be known by the fruits of their labors."

So to take his SERMON & try to force it into a political discrediting of a candidate WHO DIDN'T EVEN DELIVER THE SERMON is just STOOOOPID!!!!!

tchef, the "snippets" wherein he damns the nation to which he owes his life and freedom are a great sufficiency of what he has to say. He is to me the perfect example of a person who has spoken so objectionably that I cannot hear anything else he has to say, no matter how right, generous, forgiving, whatever. Foolishness is largely what comes out of the mouths of fools, and even though there may be occasional wisdom, I don't hear it.

Tkychnos, I think your statement was analogous, a paraphrase to the definition of what a Bigot is. You really don't want to go down the path of "owe". There is a debt that is still pending; and you don't know enough history to connect the dots to freedom . . . did you say? You can get some of that gum for a dirty mouth when you start talking about owing. People like Reverend Wright has you a full measure on the subject of owing. You may not want to hear it; that someone with their head in the sand, and that is often the case when you are trying not to own up to your debt. You need to be more aware. Let that line stay on the movies until you can talk about Rosewood or Greenwood.

You accuse me of ignorance and bigotry, but you don't know me. This has happened to me before because I refuse to recognize anyone as different from me because of skin color, except in matters where pigment is concerned. I expect persons who call themselves Christian to at least attempt to follow the example of our Lord Jesus and to apologize and make amends when they fail. Jesus was quite explicit in his commandments; there are only two. Wright's speech in question does not support or follow either one. I have been aware of and opposed to racism since before I ever went to elementary school, and can discuss Rosewood or Greenwood or Memphis or Mobile or Wounded Knee or number of other horrific incidents in our history. For these I neither owe nor am I owed anything beyond remembrance and the duty to pass on knowledge, in the hope that the present and future can avoid repeating the worst of the past.

Tkyie, Try to make your statement again without thinking about owing. Right, I don't know you, but what you said was out there. That righteousness did nothing for me. If you think that Reverend Wright owes silence and submission for the right to seem like a good American, that is the wrong signal. Re-read your statement to see you went down the wrong path, causing you to side step now. Just say you made a boo-boo, I'd rather you just say that. Try not to make statements like Reverend Wright that are offensive, unless they are constructive. Recall Jesus talking to the publicans, see Matthew 9:11-13; so by example, Wright did act to help the nation to repent. Good he didn't follow the one of driving them from the temple. Back to you, that owe thing could make someone feel there are Masters and Lords, superior beings who have paid the debt and have dominion over those lessor things who don't realize the rose tinted view. You are there with Obama and his "Bitter" Moment.

There is a price to live in a free society, and we must all pay it in one way or another. Wright is not, as demonstrated by the manner in which he lives, a victim of our society or our government. I encourage his calling down our government or our society for its sins, I even consider it a part of his responsibility as a Christian minister. I admonish him as a fellow Christian that condemnation (damning) goes beyond the pale of his Christian authority, and is in direct conflict with the commandments of our Savior, and will only serve to alienate and divide. I support his right as an American to speak as he wishes, but if he wishes to be respected as a man of God instead of just as any loud-mouth citizen, then he should set a Christ-like example.

Tky, I can go for the last part, about respect and all. Mindful he was in his church, and I see he's not there now . . . his opinion was permitted, if not appreciated. I can think of several noted ministers who are known for advancing the notion that God will damn what they don't like; some who's name start with H. Wright shouldn't do it either, but that is off the subject of this "paying" in a society. That's an issue for the IRS. This is April and I still remember. If you are questioning his allegiance, then you may be as judgmental as you accuse him. We are working toward a more perfect union, considering that this nation has not always behaved by acting with parity, compassion and against things that "God do hate", all seven of them. You surely can go out there and find the things you can change, accept those you can't and know the difference. Vote Obama and see how change feels.

I assure you that if I am able to make it to the polls, I will vote for the nominee of the Democratic Party, just as I have for every election since 1972. I did not vote for Obama in the primary, but if he gets the nod I will proudly vote for him for President. His preacher does not reflect so badly on him to me as to some people; if he's doing his job in the legislature he's not home for many Sunday sermons anyway. Wright rubs me the wrong way for reasons of religion, not politics.

gotta agree with you on that one dropkick.

just what is this guy doing?

perhaps he wants to really get this all out of the way before Obama takes on McCain. because when the GOP tries to bring this up again (and they will, bet on it) it will be beyond flogging a dead horse, we'll all roll our collective eyes as we move forward.

Unfortunately not. Negative memes have a way of sticking, just like the whole 'Obama is Muslim' thing. Wholly discredited, sure, but in a recent poll 13% of respondents think Obama in a Muslim.

Heck, my mother won't vote for him because she still harbors a 'sneaking suspicion'.

you're right. negativity does stick. but by the time the GOP brings this up again it will just be broken reocrd material. no one will have their mind changed by it. after the goal will be to shame people for voting for obama even though they don't attribute one man's beliefs to another man and don't believe Wright is some sort of anti-american secret agent.

so we need to call it out for what it is: swiftboating.

in another recent poll, 25% said McCain's age is a relevant concern.

Wright seems more interested in defending himself and cares

less & less about Obama. He definitely has a book in mind & this seems like a bookmaking tour. He is hurting Obama & though that's fine with me I don't see how Obama supporters are in turn defending Wright.

Obama is done anyway with his wife, his minister, his million man march pals & his rubbing elbows with the terrorist underground the die is cast on this guy. The vultures are hovering above the carcus it's just amatter of time!

Rev. Wright continues in the path of others like Rev. Sharpton and Rev Jackson. He spreads discord against whites as an excuse for lack of success. I seem to have missed the talk about social responsibility. I hear nothing about crime. I hear nothing about children without any male members of the family. I hear nothing about respect. How does this show that someone that listens to this for 20 years can be a leader of everyone?

Are you too stupid, too stubborn, or just too racist to see that the issues of which you speak, kboy, are not issues of race. They are issues of income. In the U.S. income is a result of ambition, talent and to a very large degree opportunity.

Play the race card. It avoids the trouble of actually discussing the issues by conveniently demonizing someone with a different opinion.

Then you haven't really listened. Most of what he says talks about personal responsibility, giving back to the community, the fact that people are different not deficient. He has done a lot for his community. That is why his church has grown the way it has.

K, one listens to a lot of stuff in our media-saturated culture without--one devoutly hopes--taking it all as gospel (pun, etc.).

Not the best move for a pol aspiring to high elected office not to have been cannier about disassociating himself from Wright earlier.

But now Obama has done so. Those for whom his relationship with Wright is a deal-breaker have the option not to vote for Obama (whom they probably wouldn't have supported anyway).

Others may consider the relationship unfortunate but not, ultimately, determinative in re supporting O.

I would council not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Of course, there are an awful lot of us that DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE, and agree with Rev. Wright's words, and understand what blacks, other minorities, and the poor of all races have been up against in the US for the last hundred years. I not only understand exactly what he meant when he said what he did, I agree one hundred percent. Take the word black out of his sermons and he is right on for all of us.

He rails against blacks falling for the politics of division. And they are using these words to divide blacks and whites RIGHT NOW. I beg you all not to fall for this ruse.

And most of those who are bringing this up during the Democratic Primary season have an interest in either prolonging the fight, or they want a Clinton/MaCain matchup in the fall.

I just watched Wright on Fox answering questions at the National Press Club.

He just blew Obama out of the water.

Hillary must be thrilled. Talk about toast ...

I can certainly understand why the Obamas stayed in Rev. Wright's church for 20 years. He is a gifted and powerful speaker. And he uses that speaking ability to try to point out inequities within the US and in our foreign policy -- places where we as a country stray from the message of Christ.

Sad to say that DropkickaLib's hate filled slurs fall far short of the man he hopes to malign.

Yes ET but this is the problems GOPers have with LIBS we point out our countries fault because we expect her to be better, they cant get that. We know she can do and be better than they have made her in the last 7 years, they are against anyone that says she is in bad shape because, well they put her in that bad shape. Like Rev Wright, I love my country and cant stand to see what these fools have done to her in the name of green and any real American would be mad as hell over the state she is in!

Best Wright quote of the whole event, "Please tell my stuck-on-stupid friends that Arabic is a language, it's not a religion. Barack Hussein Obama. Barack Hussein Obama. Barack Hussein Obama. There are Arabic-speaking Christians, Arabic-speaking Jews, Arabic-speaking Muslims and Arabic-speaking atheists. Stop trying to scare folks by giving them an Arabic name as if it's some sort of diseaseâ;¦Did you hear me, O'Reilly?"

Believe it or not some people won't vote for Obama because his middle-name is Hussein. What jamokes!

There are folks in the Obama campaign who in their heart of hearts want the "good" Reverend to vanish until after Election Day

                                                          But he won't.

So, why are we mixing religion and politics anyway? I for one find it appalling that this is an issue that the country is focusing on. All its really doing is distracting from the facts our country really needs to address. How sad!

OK whatever! Now tell me what he meant by saying the US

government came up with AIDS to kill off that black man.

I think that quite a few white people have died from this too.

I thought that this disease originated on the other side of the Atlantic. In fact Sixty Minutes did a story back in the eighties about a "WHITE" male flight attendant thought to be

the first person to bring AIDS into the US.The story was called"Patient 1"

I'll like to point out the he uses "God damn" as a subject and verb, which is very different from saying "God-d#@n" which is its usage as an adjective. Anyway here is the full context of the quote.

But let me leave you with one more thing. Governments fail. The government in this text comprised of Caesar, Cornelius, Pontius Pilate - the Roman government failed. The British government used to rule from East to West. The British government had a Union Jack. She colonized Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Hong Kong. Her navies ruled the seven seas all the way down to the tip of Argentina in the Falklands, but the British government failed. The Russian government failed. The Japanese government failed. The German government failed. And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese descent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps...

The government put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton fields, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into position of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law, and then wants us to sing God bless America? No, no, no. Not God bless America; God damn America! That's in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating her citizen as less than human. God damn America as long as she keeps trying to act like she is God and she is supreme!"

I've been to lazy to look for it and after the initial bit of shock from hearing a man of God say such a thing I considered it a non-issue and refused to pass judgment (though I did at first, I'll admit). Thus the laziness on looking for it... for me, it was a non-issue.

He relishes being in the limelight despite the fact that he is risking Obama's chances. He deflects accusations directed at him as being against African Americans. I hope all of you are smart enough to fall for his schtick. He said what he said, and when mainstream America questions him, its racist ? You have to be able to take it if you are going to be dishing it out.

Go to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah to hate on the bible. Good listening skills will bear out the interpretation. On item (2), the stats support and studies support the statement. You have the internet, its there. Criminals are "made" wholesale in this age of pleas; the poor are forced as a proven fact. Blacks are indicted and sentenced more with less cause. You know racial profiling was proven. "What you knew last" was something to make you feel good, when evil was present. Third, perhaps the people you are surrounded by may want to have a blind eye to injustice. What is the percentage of Black Officers in the Marine Corps? Is it 12 percent representative of the population or less than 3 percent, indicating black balling. Semper Fi, to a more perfect union.
