Deborah Palfrey, convicted of running a high-end Washington prostitution ring that snagged Sen. David Vitter (R), killed herself Thursday, weeks after her trial ended on charges that she said she would never go to prison for. Palfrey was convicted April 15 by a federal jury of running a prostitution service that catered to D.C.'s political elite.

Facing up to 55 years in prison, i think that would be enough to depress her.

"Channing Phillips, the spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in the District of Columbia, said that under sentencing guidelines, Palfrey faced 57 to 71 months in prison. She was free pending her sentencing July 24."

I'm sure the conspiratorial types out there will wonder if this was a staged suicide considering her client list but I'm thinking she thought death was preferable to the rest of her life in a jail cell. At her age that is what she was facing with 55 years.

I agree. she probably thought death was better than 55 years in the clink. and it probably is.

still, why didn't she release the list before she off'd herself? that woulda been a good "gotcha" on the way out. taking her hooker/client priviledge to the grave?

She faced a POSSIBLE 57 to 71 MONTHS, not years. Why not wait to find out? An appeal might have bought her even more time. What's the Occam's Razor principle?

in a case like this, it is normal to bargain by releasing names of clients.

since she didn't, it raises the question of why.

and since we know many of the clients are still in office, it makes everything about this case confusing. as outsiders, we will probably never know what really happened.

May 24, 2007-- Well, lookie, lookie, Roll Call, Politico and Wonkette all served up items yesterday that mentioned the possibility that Dick Cheney used the services of Deborah Jeane Palfrey's escort service in the 1990s. But little credit was given to ***, the investigative reporter who first blew the lid off the story (which we've followed in some, um, interesting dominatrix-inspired directions). We've already detailed how the mainstream media has often stolen his goods. Today, we catch up with him on his scoop.

*** tells Big Head DC that he first started hearing over two weeks ago that Dick Cheney might be involved. His first source had has strong ties to the Democratic party; he's since had confirmation from individuals associated with the CIA and with the Pentagon. He says that all his sources are "trustworthy" and "inside the game."

After reading and listening to berkeley's links, this is indeed VERY suspicious.

I hope the family and or friends are able to either force an investigation of her death or fund one of their own.

Only in America, the president can commit high crimes, lie to congress, lie to the world to kill the population of a weaker country and not get impeached. But pay sex and the country is ready to go back to the dark ages and stone the person to death. We don't tolerate paying for pleasure of the flesh. However, marriage turns a women into a live-in prostitute. What woman would continue giving sex to her husband if he stopped giving her money or told her she needed to get a job to support herself and they would split the cost of raising any children they have? The very people who accused her are probably a client of another sex service. It is absolutely senseless. Two people want to make an agreed exchange then that is their business. If it was a married man or woman paying for sex outside the marriage then that is an issue for the spouse to deal with, not the country or the government. If it was a single person paying for sex that is their own decision, besides, men are always paying.

This one from a newspaper outside the country. They say her secret notes reveal she "supplied" big black men to Barbara Walters for one on one encounters.

Interesting to see if this story comes out in US newspapers.

I don't believe she killed herself either. The statistics speak for themselves - a female is unlikely to commit suicide, a female is unlikely to hang herself as the method chosen and a female is unlikely to be successful at it.

Not much for conspiracy theories but I did find it an odd coincidence that the 1st woman prosecuted in this matter also committed suicide. This one made the public statement that she was not like the other woman and would name names if she were given too hard of a sentence.

                      Just doesn't sound quite right.

Killed herself?! Just look at her! Does she look like a person that is weak? She ran that business for 13 years with people she knew she had to be careful around. She was no milk toast! I seriously doubt she took her own life. What a sad and tragic loss of life :(

13% of women who commit suicide do so by hanging. She had not yet been sentenced and there was some indication that she was going to work out a deal with the prosecution.

"Palfrey faced 57 to 71 months in prison. She was free pending her sentencing July 24" according to the prosecutor's office.

Doubtful that she would have served more than 3 years in prison.

I would agree that the timing seems suspect. I would think knowing what the actual consequences might be an important factor prior to stepping off the step ladder with a rope around one's neck.

Assuming she DID kill herself--and for me conspiracy theories are almost always the least plausible explanations in such cases--this is very sad indeed.

What does it say about misguided "justice" when one is condemned to prison for facilitating sexual encounters between men who want such and women (in this case) who are willing to fulfill that need?

Those who rail about government intervention in our daily lives, and others against sex workers, would do well to ponder the barbaric practice of outlawing commercial sexual exchanges among CONSENTING ADULTS.

That's what you get when you mess with powerful people. There is no need to call it a conspiracy, there was no need to conspire, someone important had a problem and someone took care of it for him. I have little doubt that many of the people in our Federal government have the necessary connections. I'm fairly certain people in the do in Michigan and Louisiana State governments, why not DC?

Free elections can only work against corruption when people pay attention to corruption during elections. Even then, with large well established parties the elected officials might not be corrupt, but the party leaders they listen to could be. I see no reason for either the Republicans or the Democrats to opt out of potentially useful connections with the more criminal elements of society, so long as it is done discretely.
