"Just in the past few minutes ... things have gotten a lot worse," CNN's Cal Perry reported from downtown Beirut. The sound of gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades could be heard throughout his live reports.
Perry, who took cover with the Lebanese army, said government forces have not yet reacted to the violence.

Then, one can remember that the US and Israel are "supporting" the minority "christian fascist government" in Lebanon, including terrorists.
Who's Behind the Fighting in North Lebanon?
... Given Bush administration debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan and its encouragement for Israel to continue its destruction of Lebanon this past summer, the situation in Lebanon mirrors, in some respects, the early 1980's when groups sprung up to resist the US green lighted Israeli invasion and occupation. But rather than being Shia and pro-Hezbollah, today's groups are largely Sunni and anti-Hezbollah. Hence they qualify for US aid, funneled by Sunni financial backers in league with the Bush administration which is committed to funding Islamist Sunni groups to weaken Hezbollah.
This project has become the White House obsession following Israel's July 2006 defeat.

> I'm sure most Lebanese people just want peace.
Most people everywhere just want peace. Unfortunately, some people want pIece NOT WITH the others but WITHOUT others so these others must be killed first... and then, of course, there will be peace.
This is why Israel and the Jews are to blame for the absence of peace in the Middle East in general and in Lebanon, in particular. If there were no Jews and no Israel then the Palestinian Arabs would not know that they're "Palestinians"; they would not try to overturn Jordanian King Hussein in 1970; Hussein would not throw them out of Jordan; there would be no resulting civil war in Lebanon... and Lebanon would remain the same 'cosmopolitan country' it was back in the 1950s and the 1960s.
It's all the Zionist plots!

Well, well! From the comments up to this point we see a number of zionists who are well aware of israeli crimes against humanity in Labanon and are trying to "play innocent" even before these are remembered! It is, of course, in the historical record that the zionists in Israel wanted southern Lebanon from the beginning and have committed numerous crimes against humanity in Lebanon.
Sharon's war crimes in Lebanon: the record
... The Zionists had long had an interest in Lebanon, one of four small states carved out of the Syrian province of the Ottoman Empire by French imperialism in the aftermath of World War I. In 1938, Ben Gurion, who was to become Israel's first prime minister in 1948, envisaged a state of Israel that would include Southern Lebanon as far as the Litani Riverâ;;an essential water supply.

His perspective included an alliance with Lebanon's Christian Maronites, one of the many sectional groups encouraged by the French colonial regime to keep the region divided as a bulwark against the Muslim Arab masses and Arab nationalism.
In the mid-1950s, the Israeli government considered the break-up of Lebanon, the establishment of a Christian state and the annexation of Southern Lebanon. Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan, foreshadowing what was to happen in the late 1970s, argued that this could be achieved by winning over or bribing a military officer who would put himself at the head of the Maronites and provide the pretext for an Israeli invasion.
... While Israel made much of the terrorist attacks on its own population, there was little reporting of its own scorched earth campaign between 1968 and 1974 against Lebanon...

No hyperbola, you are seeing people who are literate in historical facts of which you deny. It's not unusual for sick minds to ignore the facts as the rest of the intelligent world knows them. But then again, some people just need Google to foster their stupidity. They can't do it on their own because they don't have the resources or the ability. HOW SAD for Hyperbola. BTW, please show us all CREDIBLE, RECOGNIZED historical evidence that Israel coveted southern Lebanon. You can't because it doesn't exist. No credible historian would ever make that claim and I know that for a fact since I attend most of the international historical conferences.

October 7, 1985, Between Alexandria, Egypt and Haifa, Israel. A four-member Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine squad took over the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro, as it was sailing from Alexandria, Egypt, to Israel. The squad murdered a disabled U.S. citizen, Leon Klinghoffer, by throwing him in the ocean. The rest of the passengers were held hostage for two days and later released after the terrorists turned themselves in to Egyptian authorities in return for safe passage. But U.S. Navy fighters intercepted the Egyptian aircraft flying the terrorists to Tunis and forced it to land at the NATO airbase in Italy, where the terrorists were arrested. Two of the terrorists were tried in Italy and sentenced to prison. The Italian authorities however let the two others escape on diplomatic passports. Abu Abbas, who masterminded the hijacking, was later convicted to life imprisonment in absentia.

The Shiites and Sunnis have been going at if since the fourth Caliph. The Shiite leader at that time waited to be killed along with his whole family. He did this knowing that it would mean war for a long time. They still fight over it like today.

December 4, 1984, Tehran, Iran. Hizballah terrorists hijacked a Kuwait Airlines plane en route from Dubai, United Emirates, to Karachi, Pakistan. They demanded the release from Kuwaiti jails of members of Da'Wa, a group of Shiite extremists serving sentences for attacks on French and American targets on Kuwaiti territory. The terrorists forced the pilot to fly to Tehran where the terrorists murdered two passengers--American Agency for International Development employees, Charles Hegna and William Stanford. Although an Iranian special unit ended the incident by storming the plane and arresting the terrorists, the Iranian government might also have been involved in the hijacking.Robert Stethem
