But if your dad was abusive, you could have ended up a mass murderer. There are no guarantees.

I agree with you Tangent001- there are no guarantees, a child can have 2 very positive role model parents, great education, living conditions etc..and still turn out to be very dysfunctional or a bad person. some turn out to be fantastic people even if despite they had horrible parents. Of course it's much easier to raise a child if you start out with 2 people with the best in every way to offer your children, but realistically how often does that happen??? good parent(s) do the best they can and hope or pray for the best outcome.

From the age of 2 I raised my Son alone, we've had many talks about the issue, mainly because I do feel a bit guilty that I didn't pick a better person to marry and father him. But I did make sure he had plenty of good role models in his life, my parents, siblings and some good friends, teachers, coaches etc.. which I would have had even if I had stayed married. If something would have happened to me, I was glad to know he would have all that support.

I would never claim to be the best mother in the world, when I think back I could have done better, but I can say I am extremely proud of the man my Son has become. Sure I take some credit, but credit is due to dozens of others as well, and he deserves some because we are all individuals, we make choices, we have burdens to over come, circumstances and luck play parts etc...who knows who I would be or who he might be if life was different, might be better might be worse.
