Comments for Chris Matthews Tears Right-Wing Dufus a New One »
Posted By AnnP30 1 year, 7 months ago in NewsDon't tick off Chris Matthews. On Thursday's edition of his MSNBC show Hardball, Matthews humiliated clueless Los Angeles right-wing radio host Kevin James over the "appeasement" uproar President Bush started in Israel during the state's 60th anniversary celebration.

''One thing about the pugs you have to admire: they always keep digging. I'm surprised they haven't reached China yet.''
in a way they have
I've heard we owe China a lot of money for our hole-digging foreign policy
but don't worry
they tell us we're turning corners
....
maybe that's the problem
turning those corners and diggin sideways now

Just goes to show you should never try to shout down the guy who owns the switch to your microphone. James proved he was a babbling idiot with no earthly idea what appeasement even means. All he knows is it's a talking point the RepugniCons are supposed to tar their opponents with.
It was truly fun to watch Chris Mathews take the blow hard apart.

But this is exactly what every yahoo on these boards is like. They shout and argue but they have not a clue what they are arguing about.
Appeasement is giving something away.
Talking is discussing issues.
Bush/McCain are no better than Kevin.
Still, lmfao!! awesome!

OK. These talking heads need to do this. Turn off the loud mouths so that the public can HEAR the facts between the rantings of the loud mouths. CONS are loud mouths who don't want anything to be heard but their rhetoric. They yell, talk fast, interrupt, and babble. It serves NO public good to allow the to continue to yell, talk fast and interrupt.

This is why they're so terrified of the Fairness Doctrine. They think that in order to have their side heard, they must exclude or shout down the opposing point of view. Sad.
What would O'Really do if he couldn't scream maniacally into the faces of guests with whom he disagrees? How would cons survive if they were obliged to consider more than one side of an issue? ;-P

Well of course it is. They've spent 30 years dismantling it. That's why they need to be turned off between tirades so the public can get the gist of what the other guy is trying to say.

The title of this article is most informative, funny, and pathetic -- all in one.
CNN and Fox have slid into a morass of squid scum; their coverage of the candidates and campaigns are reminiscent of 3rd grade schoolyard scuffles.
MSNBC has a few programs that are almost tolerable... but if one wants to exchange ideas and learn what is really going on, they need to read more and use the internet.
I watched how Matthews dismanteld that ignoramus. It was both a necessary and an embarrassing display.

I agree SC, however my sister says everything on the internet has been tampered with to make repubs look bad, lol, can you believe the way they think?
Oh and she also says that none of the things that Cindy McCain has done are true because they weren't reported on Fox! She says that Fox is the only real source of news!
See what i have to deal with?

Wow, I think I have a proper metaphor that may simulate the differences. There are those who look down and notice if their fly is unzipped, then tell others when theirs are unzipped, because they happen to notice it and it is true. Then there are those who walk around, with not only their flies unzipped, but shirt tales hanging out, and they try to pound you into the ground, punish you and send you to jail for life with no parole for having your fly partially unzipped (or even not at all).
Do you recognize who is who?

n2n your sister seriously believes that? I hope she doesn't believe everything on the internet is true about liberals.
I agree SC that we need to read more (widely, and different points of view) and use the internet. You can not rely on the media. My media example: Our local news media, radio, and newspapers were invited to The Twin Cities Stand Down this past Monday and Tuesday. One of the TV stations sent a reporter, the second day a camera was there. There was no coverage anywhere about it. If a vet was at an agency that had the flyer up, a church, accessed the Stand Down website, Vet Center or from another vet that's how he heard about it. This was good news too.

She does believe that CM. For one thing, she's not that familiar with the internet, and thinks that you can just go into anything you want to and make changes to it. She is just now starting to familiarize herself with it, (67 yrs old) and hopefully she will find that it's just not possible to change news articles to make repubs look bad. Hopefully, not saying it's going to happen!
I hate to say this but she almost as bad as aniokly! YIKES!

Wow...I thought I had it rough having a sister who thinks all law enforcement officers of every kind are corrupt (and they all have a vendetta against her alone). What has always amazed me is that the "liberal media" is so powerful that not even other nations (entire continents, in fact) can escape it's mighty jaws. ;-P

It must be apparent by now that most right wing dolts don`t really know what they are talking about. It`s all about spouting the party line, mindlessly reciting the current talking points.
Context and facts be damned. I guess it really isn`t all their fault, look at who they have been using as a role model, the great decider.
In the land of the witless, the half-wit is king.

Aplogies if this comment appears more than once, but props having a bad day losing posts !!!!
So, in context, how many people of the age of the "smackdown" victim (without imediate recourse to Google) would know exactly WHAT Chamberlain did (and WHEN) ? I doubt if it would be more than a few percent IN ENGLAND, let alone the US..... At least the "victim" knew that the word appeasment applied to one of the worst politicians the UK's ever had....
Er, can anyone remember "Peace In Our Time" ?????
This "interview" looked more like a shooting gallery to me....
Negged for the above, as this was NOT what I'd call an interview / debate, it was purely amd simply an effort to discredit.......

Anyone who took a history class that included world war II and the period and events leading up to it would know what Chamberlain did and what appeasement really means. Not knowing what occurred is no excuse for going on the air pretending like you do know what happened.

Chris gave the moron every chance to admit his mistake/Bush`s/McCain`s mistake with dignity. But the guy chose the shouting no-nothing approach.
Appeasement; giving up something.
Talking, discussing, negotiating; something a decent president uses to avoid wasting GI lives and limbs on unnecessary and counterproductive battles.
No, Kevin James, attacked Obama over appeasement without even knowing what it means. Like every neocon moron who makes this fake argument, James deserves every bit of every ounce of national embarrassment they so eager seek.

Yes I can because I was there. It is debatable that Neville Chamberlain was "one of the worst politicians the UK has ever had". One school of thought thinks that he gave the UK time to re-arm so that we stood a chance later. Now after all this time I'm inclined to agree with that.

The worst leaders the UK... and all of Europe... had were the ones following World War I. The ones who demanded outrageous reparations of Germany for a war that wasn't even its fault, anymore then any of the other countries initially involved. That set the ground for Hitler's rise to power and for Chamberlain to display his attitude of appeasement at the Munich Conference, whether this was a good thing or a bad thing is debatable. I tend to believe that such things going on in your "backyard" so to speak should be clipped in the bud if possible. The question is whether Hitler could of been stopped at that point in history with fewer lives lost... the answer to that is the key point in where Chamberlain should stand in history. One should also consider the long peace that resulted from WW2 and factor that into the final calculations of how many lives might have been saved... or lost.

Out of which (WWII) then arose the Marshall Plan and Pax Americana... to yield an extraordinarily peaceful and prosperous stretch of time in human history.
The most tangible artifact of Pax Americana is the European Union... an achievement beyond the wildest dreams of anyone from the perspective of a century ago.

Well that "pax americana" did involve us committing numerous acts of terrorism in Europe as well as supporting military dictatorships, so europeans have a rather different picture of that period. but you wouldn't be expected to have ever heard of that.
Secret Warfare : Operation Gladio and NATO's Stay-Behind Armies
After the Cold War had ended, Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti confirmed to the Italian Senate in August 1990 that Italy had had a secret stay-behind army, codenamed Gladio â;; the sword. A document from the Italian military secret service, SIFAR, revealed that SIFAR had been running the secret army ... in close collaboration with the CIA. Suggesting the secret army might have linked up with right-wing organizations such as Ordine Nuovo and Avanguardia Nazionale to engage in domestic terror, the Italian Senate decided in 1990 that Gladio was beyond democratic control and therefore had to be closed down....

Judging Chamberlain 60 years after the fact is kind of like playing Michael Moore, only without the video. Just the insinuations of what he must have been thinking. Exactly what the Right hates MM for, but with none of the facts that MM has.
For example, from what I have read England was no more ready to go to war at that time than America. Chamberlain was not responsible for the weakness of the British military at that time. Britain is a parliamentary system, which requires much greater debate and cooperation than our winner-take-all two party system. Cannot place all blame for nearly an entire nation`s wanting to avoid another WWI which was still fresh in their minds.

I'm glad that Matthews made a comment about getting someone on there who had a knowledge of history. I'm equally glad that he did not make a comment about Khrushchev and Kennedy meeting immediately before the Cuban Missile Crisis. Or about how FDR met with the enemies of the US to make things better. Or how Truman used these meetings with enemies to lessen wars effects. Those comments would have been absurd. Especially if they were made by a right wing radio host, but not so much if they were made by a liberal presidential candidate.

well man, there's a couple ways to look at it
if you were going on a national TV show, your credibility on the line, and were going to talk about Chamberlain appeasing Hitler, wouldn't you take those 10 seconds to Google exactly HOW Chamberlain appeased Hitler?
so like I said on the first page, I didn't know it
but if I was going to talk about it, you'd better believe I'd do the research
so It's not that he didn't know, it's that he wouldn't admit that he didn't know
and he kept sticking to his guns even tho he had no idea what he was talking about
that's the shameful part, not his not knowing something

now DM I'm with you on the assassination/hit thing[I could only sit thru half of it], but why bother debating someone who has no idea what they are even talking about, and are too lazy to take a minute to google 'Chamberlain appeases Hitler'
he brought it on himself by just repeating what other people say and not researching and thinking for himself
you reap what you don't bother to know

Well, I think he brought it on himself by spewing the party line that a certain type of negotiation EQUALS appeasement when:
1) we all f`in know it doesn`t
2) a slight variation on negotiation strategy (that any expert will tell you is a guarantee for failure btw) means it isn`t appeasement
Hypocritical, moving goal posts in the sixth inning, neocon anti-logic swiftboating.

Chamberlain not only handed away Czechoslovakia to the Nazis, he was a wet noodle throughout Europe when Hitler took the Saarland, annexed back parts of former Prussia, and committed the Anschluss against Austria. I remember "Peace in our Time." How do people without an historical knowledge whatsoever end up as radio talk show hosts? We need a support group called BA...bloviaters anonymous.

david, I wondered if you happened to catch the 74 yr old woman caller on C-SPAN this morning who shared her resignation over the gay marriage ban being lifted. She starts out sounding halfway intelligent and then she drones on to say that she is fine with gay people being married but then quickly adds that she wishes she *wasn't* fine with it. Hmmm. Ok, lady--no more Centrum silver for you. LOL Oh and for the piece de resistance, she ends her thoughtful comments with that question that's on the mind of every American (not)--"what will happen if a father and daughter decide they want to get married....blah blah blah" before getting cut off (deservedly so, I might add) by the host.

Sadly, I'm afraid you *will* hear it (or something similar) eventually, Mdiar. Right wing bigots are frequently little more than johnny one-notes. Consider the knee-jerk manner in which cons automatically bring up the Barney Frank or Gerry Studds (usually with their names misspelled) sex scandals from decades ago whenever there is discussion of a current Republican sex scandal (hetero or homo). Notice how ALL cons characterize events EXACTLY the same way? Frank "ran a prostitution ring from his basement" or "Democrats applauded him on the House floor." Neither of these is true but some right wing shout radio "personality" told them this and so they think this is all they need to know to have an informed discussion on the matter of "family values." Then again, I'm highly skeptical that any of these people actually want to engage in legitimate debate.

I missed that line of reasoning. Sounds like someone had too much Geritol this morning. Maybe she should switch to decaf.
I kid, stick with the caffeine. Hmm, fathers and daughters marrying one another? Ask Electra. If sons want to marry mothers, we can ask Oedipus how that worked out for him. I doubt half the Propeller folks will understand these references, but it's worth a shot.

Many would have to join it... I was watching this when it happened and it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen! I had to take the equivalent of two classes over that time period when all was said and done in High School... Russian History spent a semester going over WW2, so did World History, American History and a history of the Near-East! I never took the European History course...

I was actually just reading through one of my wife's books (she's teaches French and and has also taught history....she studied a lot on World War II and the nazi's....one of her professors was a survivor of the holocaust).
As for how they end up with talk show hosts without any historical knowledge....some do have knowledge, they are just liars. Others probably didn't (don't) think history is important.

The only good news is that Chris Matthews ripped Kevin James a new one on prime time tv. The neocons should know enough to at least hire creeps who have studied history thoroughly enough to converse intelligently. Even the Mafia knew enough to hire professionals to operate their business.
Our latest batch of neocon thugs seem to be the last of the boat rats that are too crippled to jump ship.
