The Yemeni authorities had good reason to think that the explosion was internal. The official lies about the Cole bombing are not as supremely ludicrous as the hijacked jets hitting the Twin Towers and the Pentagon or Israel mistaking the USS Liberty for the El Quseir, but it is still full of holes. Even the side of the ship facing the refueling dock was wrong, and the Navy admitted that the ship had been undergoing refueling for half an hour when the explosion took place. So much for the claim that a boat full of explosives squeezed in between the ship and the dock during mooring and rammed the port side of the ship. See http://whatreallyhappened.com/COLE/

Nor could a boat containing 500 pounds of explosives cause as much damage to the ship. It would have required a large shaped charge, and explosives only The United States, Israel and two Arab nations possessed. Or, it was an internal blast.
