I saw the clip of what he said. He goofed. He said he had been all of the states. He then said he had gone to 57 states. There was a subdued chuckle. He then added that he had 1 more to go. More chuckles. He then added that his campaign would not let him go to Alaska and Hawaii. More chuckles. He looked confused over the chuckles and just kept making it worse.
He obviously meant 47 states but said 57. He looked like a deer in headlights. He didn't understand peoples reaction.

There are three possibilities. One, he made a mistake and mis-spoke (unlikely). Two, he meant that he'd been to more than one state more than one time (likely, but not the most likely upon review). Three, he was making a joke. Three now seems the most likely based upon where the even occurred and the laughter from the audience.
So, it is typical of the political climate in which we find ourselves that a candidate can not make ANY comment, even in jest, that can be taken out of context and twisted by whomever wishes to do the most damage. And yes, there IS very much a difference between talking about the rigors of the campaign trail and speaking of "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran".
