My 'Progressive' Town Filled With Tennis-Playing Racists? »
Posted By lenseview 1 year, 6 months ago in NewsInteresting, personal story by journalist-author describing her upscale NJ town as a place where private country & tennis clubs, etc. still treat potential members like it's 1950s. No Jews, African Americans, minorities need apply. What if a friend joins a club that wouldn't allow you as a member? How do apparently "progressive" peopl

"Who would have guessed?"
All of those progressive, well educated liberals who belong to those clubs?
I have lived in NJ and other areas in the northeast
Racism is alive and well.
Why do you think so many Southerners bristle when people from "up north" constantly portray the South as racist?
AND Jovial when you make comments like "So it's not just Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky" your own bias is showing

Town I used to live in had 3 clubs. Each discriminated against "others." At one point there was an informal town meeting called to discuss things and nobody showed up. People are free to associate with whom they want. But, if you're going to actively exclude people simply because of race or religion or ethnicity, seems to me you ought to at least be up front about it. Instead so many people in town pretended they weren't doing it. It was almost farce. They'd "invite" a minority to their clubs and then put him through an interview process that was guaranteed to turn him off. Or they'd say, look I vote Democrat so obviously I'm not prejudiced or acting inappropriately. So on top of values and preferences that IMO ought to be questioned, these folks didn't even have the courage to acknowledge what they were doing.

"the Jews are volleying at the J Club",
Name one club that Jews or Blacks prohibit membership based on race, religion, or creed?
However, prejudice certaily does emanate from every group on earth. The politics of division is fostered in the U.S. by an elite group of privileged corporate leaders and lobbyists who can only maintain political control of our government by keeping us fighting against each other.

A number of clubs with predominantly Jewish or other minority members prefer to keep their membership somewhat exclusive, i think. But most of these clubs arose only because the minorities were excluded totally from the then existing clubs. I think it became kind of a habit especially because in the beginning nobody other than their own groups wanted to be in their clubs. Would like to think changes are happening. Clearly there's a lot more work to be done and openmindedness to be found

I remember when I lived in L.A. a country club didn't allow Jews. So the Jews bought it and it became predominatly Jewish. I forget the name, it was down near Wilshire and Highland.
Name one club that whites prohibit membership by Jews or Blacks.

As a Southerner now living in the North, it irritates me to see the level of racism among these people who made it their business to desegregate the South.
Truth be told, a good deal of the South is now more racially diverse and comfortable with that than the racially insular enclaves in the North East.

Geez I had this argument with another poster a few weeks back. The new Racism in the South is much more subtle but just as appalling. Recently we had a discussion among several of my co-workers on racism. A touchy subject but we all agreed to keep our emotions in check. A pretty diverse group as well. We came to the conclusion that everyone suffers from some racism. The people we felt were the most dishonest ones were those who claimed they had no racist beliefs. They are simply living in denial. It is perfectly natural to look at another races ways and mores and feel uncomfortable because they are not the same as yours. It's how you get beyond this that truly matters and shows the true mettle of the person. And how many Americans are "xenophobic" finding foreign cultures difficult to relate to or downright weird? Surely an even greater number.
Anyone living in the South who denies racism exists here is seriously deluded, it is everywhere.

I cannot judge a man by the color of his skin.
If you were to call me a racist because I said something "bad" about someone you would be making a just plain silly and ill informed attempt at insult.
There are lots of people from pretty much any race you can name I don't like.
It has nothing to do with their Race at all.
It has everything to do with their deeds.
Racism is stupid...Flat Fact.

I worked at a couple of country clubs on the golf course while in college and found out these country club members and even a lot of the employees were the snootiest people I have ever come across. i guess thats why I loved that movie "Caddyshack".

My gun club lets everyone join and top shelf drinks are only $2.50. I don't smoke, but you can still smoke inside too.
Can't join the Scouts though if you are homosexual. What would you rather the gays play with gimp or guns? My vote is for gimp. Although I did tell a friend of mine who is gay to get his LTC because there is a lot of violence against gay men.

When I was a kid in NY my folks belonged to a country club. I only paid attention to the lady who wore a bathing suit with a see through mesh top. I don't know what religion the "twins" were but I didn't care. I loved those fashionable trends in the 60's......
