At all levels of society, usually at great sacrifice, the Iraqi people frustrated the imperial designs of a superpower. As the occupation wore on, the Bush administration found itself swimming against a tide of resistance of a previously unimaginable sort, and ever further from its goals.

Unlike the Iraqis, after all, the citizens of the United States are uniquely positioned to bury this imperial dream for all time.
