No combination of solar, wind and nuclear power, ethanol, biodiesel, tar sands and used French-fry oil will allow us to power Wal-Mart, Disney World and the interstate highway system -- or even a fraction of these things -- in the future. We have to make other arrangements. So what are intelligent responses to our predicament?

    We need to be conservative, not liberal, in our laying waste of the world's natural resources. It's not just energy: our wastefulness has put our food (fisheries) and water resources in jeopardy. We really don't need to cut our USE: all we need to do is reduce our WASTE. Can anyone think of some suggestions for doing so?

      Whereas Republicans will be happy when 99.9% of the people are living on the street, and peeing on the sidewalk, and the other 0.1% split their time between NYC penthouses, Palm Beach mansions and Aspen chalets, all with matched sets of golden toilets and bidets.
