    well the story title does include the word 'may' and the comment 'scientists are raising the possibility ' those 2 words are prime words for deniers! may and possibility.
    I know I read a long time ago that Antarctica and the Arctic are 2 of the most polluted places because a lot of pollution gets trapped. If it melts, it would make sense all that build up wouldn't trapped any longer.

        They also introduced methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) as a gasoline additive as well, that has polluted our shallow aquifers for 20 years now. Though it has been very good to the environmental consulting industry, unintended consequences can be devastating. Ethanol is another example, it takes more energy to make than it generates and causes basic staple shortages in third world countries.

        Ah yes, because someone libs in california pushed MTBE (I'll take your source at it's word because a quick search doesn't find anything other than your conservative rag)
        And I remember republicans and oil companies throwing fits as governments banned it several years ago.
        Why don't we just get rid of all environmental regulations....go back to the days of burning rivers and just buy a bunch of face masks to "protect" us from the massive air pollution.

        MTBE was fist introduced by the petrochemical industry as a means of eliminating lead from gas (a good idea). In the 1990s, the petrochemical industry found that MTBE in higer concentrations reduces air pollution, thereby allowing them to meet clean air standards at low cost.
        The problem with MTBE arises from sloppy handling.

        Lead removal and reduction in air pollution was mandated, thus we now have the MTBE problem.
        The thing about MTBE is that it travels so quickly, ahead of any plume from a release, such as from underground storage tanks at a local gas station, or over-filling a tank. MTBE is always a precursor we evaluate from analytical results of samples collected during groundwater monitoring events, to help us delineate said hydrocarbon plume. MTBE can show up in samples, a few years before other hydrocarbons, such as , Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene do.

        As you say, MTBE is more of a warning of potential problems from substandard storage tanks, most of which are CORPORATE controlled.

        As far as the USTs go, they have been replacing steel USTs with fiberglass tanks (the newest technology) since the 1990s, the steel rusts and leaks, they weren't some ploy to use sub-standard materials by Big Corporations, that is simply a falsehood. Steel was what was available until the fiberglass was able to be used. Fiberglass is far from perfect either, it's very brittle. I've supervised the removal of both steel and fiberglass tanks. You have to be extra careful when you clean a FRP tank, prior to removal, because they tend to fall apart as you remove them from the tank pit. This and other environmental topics is something I'm fairly well versed in, I'm not the one to try and make false statements to as it pertains to this subject.

        "Big Liberalism", as far as I know, does not own any gas storage tanks that leak, releasing MTBE into the water. I did not say that there was any ploy to use substandard materials. I only made the obvious comment that MTBE is released via tanks that leak. Anybody (or corporation) that stores toxic chemicals has a responsability to make sure that their tanks don't leak.
        I agreed with you about the solubility of MTBE and its rate of movement.

Personally I think AG is a hypocrite, doesn't make the message of climate change any less true.         As you well know, Damnliberals, the corn-to-ethanol fiasco is promoted by a combination of BIG argibusiness and the ethanol lobby (led by Archer Daniels Midland Corp). The main proponents are Congress people from the corn belt.
        Environmental organizations such as the Audubon society and the Sierra Club are opposed to the corn-to-ethanol program.

        That change was made so simple minds can understand the term and all it covers. The word 'warming' did not just mean higher temps. Besides that, you really can't use a term as fact until after the fact,people with the wait and see attitude...despite what many scientists say ( and forget about Al G.) well....who has a perfect word for that?
        Is it a play on words when there are warnings about different chemicals, viruses, bacterias, every day risks people take when they use the words 'may, possibly, probable,might etc..?

      The problem with this story is the assumption that ddt is harmful to the environment. Please be advised this has been proven erroneous ddt is not harmful to the environment. Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring" was a gross lie and, of course, since then million of people, mostly children, have died of a disease, malaria, when prior to the banning of ddt it was nearly whipped out. Another example of how liberal policies hurt and kill people.

        Wolfie-Did we really ban DDT for the whole world? It's still being used in some places esp. indoors. From what I remember bugs develop resistance to DDT and can then drink it like a Gator drinks beer at a Florida/Georgia game-with no hangover. There's allot of hype about the banning of DDT and how great it is.
