Man this is sad news. He was in my opinion, the funniest man alive. Here are some of his best stand up acts for those interested:

Was it Carlin who did the gameshow called something like "If you catch it you keep it?" where they were throwing stuff off a building into the audience? I thought it might either have been Carlin or Firesign Theatre--way back when.

He was the best! A very funny man. Comedy just won't be the same without him. How sad... he was so young.
RIP George Carlin. You will be missed by many people for generations to come.
My condolences to the greatest comedian in history!

Just heard about his death this morning at 1. I remember seeing him first on SNL when he did his classic about Baseball v. Football.
Always liked watching him on HBO and his short-lived TV series, because Carlin always had a unique perspective on life. Mainly because most of the things he made fun of are essentially true about life.
He'll definitely be missed.

I've listed to George Carlin since long before I should have known some of the words you can't say on television.
His insights into baseball and football, what's its like to grow up Catholic, drugs, sex, and the like were all dead on.
He was a man for his time, and spoke for a generation of Americans.

And the Lord said, "Time to come home to Papa, you Son-of-a-B**ch!"
George said, "No way, Dude. F*** You!"
And the rest of the living looked on, stunned, knowing who would prevail in that discussion and quietly contemplating our loss.

Ok, I loved George to pieces, his brand of humor combined witty intelligence and uncompromising 'in-your-face' honest opinions. He said what everybody was thinking but dared not say.
He was an athiest, as far as I know, so now that he's probably met his maker and existing somewhere in some other dimension, he's probably busy whipping up some fresh new Carlin-esque material. It's too bad we won't ever get to hear it straight from the man.
Any mediums in the room? Where's John Edwards when you need him?

captured the essence of the double standard on the word ni@@er in his usual bold fearless way:
'It's just a word. We don't get upset when Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor use that word.
Why?
[big pause]
Because they're n****rs!'
only George could say that and get away with it. maybe the smartest comedian ever, a fav of mine.
as for his atheism, which he also fearlessly included in his act, I don't think whatever deity there may be would hold atheism against someone who brought smiles to so many faces

George's routine on words and racism featuring his 'ni@@er joke', which is one of the most brilliant things I ever heard
the brilliance of the part I quoted is it highlights brutally and concisely and clearly the racism of segregationally holding black people to a different standard
Plus, it's unexpected and hilarious, as well as being insightful

I remember when he was a regular on Tony Orlando and Dawn (Okay, NOW I feel old), my sister and I would get so excited when his routine came on.
I was fortunate enough to see him when he came through Denver this year. Got the t-shirt with 2,000 dirty words and phrases. Think I'll get it framed now.
Later George, you're already missed.

I've always enjoyed George's sense of humor. He was an intelligent person and always gave a superior performance. One problem was his attacks on religion.
As a believer, can you imagine as he slipped away and woke up in heaven for judgment what his first words were? "Holy crap, am I'm in trouble!"
Rest in peace.

George was a man who not only made a person laugh and smile, but also made them think. Even in a room of people with a wide gulf of beliefs and opinion, as evidenced here in this little group, he could make those people think and have a great time all at once. There is power there, and we will all be a bit worse off for him having left us.
Rest well, George, rest well.

It's a sad thing when people idolize someone who was addicted to drugs and alcohol. I never really thought his humor was funny. Then again I never liked Kinnison nor Howard Stern. I'll admit folks like this type of humor because it appeals to a "darker side" of life in general. They make a living off of "shock" and their audiences enjoy the "thrill" of someone blurting out stuff. That's how Howard Sterno makes a livin'.
There's something to be noted about Carlin, but like Kinnison (aged 38) it may be more about where they started then where they ended.
On Carlin:
"He acknowledged that this is a very selfish thing, especially since he included large human catastrophes as entertainment."

Oh! Dear George ... how I am going to miss you. You made me laugh and think. You made me pause and reevaluate and engouraged me to listen louder for the meaning of your priceless dialogues. How will I miss you ... let me count the ways, George.

His humor had a way of making me confront myself...
It wasn't always easy. The most unsettling thing for me was at some time I started to become uncomfortable with some of the anger I perceived. Am I getting too sensitive in my tender years? LOL! Sleep well my friend...and share the news of your journey.

"The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating...
...and you finish off as an orgasm." -George Carlin
You will be missed.

WHen he was in his heyday, back in the early 70's, I remember seeing him come on a variety show (Flip Wilson?) He was introduced and he came out to the stage. THen he just stood there. Motionless. For several seconds, quite. Then a chuckle. Thenm more chuckling. The guffaws. The camera zoomed on his face. More chuckling. Then his eybrow moved. More chuckling. Then he changed arm position. Guffawing. Then after what seemed like a half hour, he said thank you and walked of, to very loud cheers.
The man was just funny!

The man was no ordinary comedian. He was a modern day philosopher.
He started off as a shock comic but through his use of alliteration and wordplay he conveyed his message for all that cared to listen. He revolutionized comedy by commenting on the most mundane subjects and provided insights into the hypocricies of todays society.
His "Ten Commandments" is a classic that will never be equalled.
He will be sorely missed.
Goodbye George. Heaven (if there is one) will be cracking up for eons to come.

He was one of the funniest men around in his earlier years. When he went to using all the four letter words in his shows and on the cable channels I found other stand up folk to watch and enjoy. The world will miss him because of his ability to make people laugh and think at the same time.
My heart goes out to his loved ones.
He leaves a great void.

Look like he will get a Grammy nomination, just read this:

Kelly Carlin, daughter of the late, legendary comedian George Carlin, is opening up to ET about her father's posthumous Grammy nomination.
Carlin received a Best Comedy Album nom for It's Bad For Ya, his final HBO standup special. He passed away this June at the age of 71.
"The blow of my father's death is continually softened by the knowledge that people still love and appreciate him and his work," Kelly tells us. "I believe that this album is one of his best, and I am thrilled that it is being honored by this nomination.
