We reaped no long-term beneifts from our adventures in "making the world safe for democracy": The Shah of Iran, Ngo Dinh Diem. Sometimes we backed ourselves into a corner of supporting ruthless dictators like Saddam Hussein, Augusto Pinochet and Pol Pot: any enemy of our former enemy would do.

Read the book that OBL recommends that was written by an American - Rogue State, Manual for the Last Remaining Superpower... and see how attrocious our foreign policy has been to almost everybody. At least we had an excuse against the commies...but no real excuse now, other than what the Bushies can convince you to believe with their fear-mongering!

Here's an interesting book about how long the Islamic revolution was in the works and how the Islamic fundamentalists won against modernist Islamic utopians:
An Islamic Utopian, A Political Biography of Ali Shari'ati by Ali Rahnema
