Too many people tend to blame our educational system for it's shortcommings when in reality it is the socio-econpmic groups that are at fault. It is the responsibility of parents to instill in their children the power of education. It is NOT the responsibility of the educational system to make the children learn. Their responsibilty is to teach the child the 3 R's. It is the childs responsibilty to learn. while we need to do a much better job teaching the 3 R's it is still the parent's responsibility to teach thier child about education. Why so many children are failing to get an education, we can only place a small blame on the education system itself.

So how do you propose to change the fact that uneducated parents are too ignorant to be able to teach their children about education. How can someone without the tools of knowledge, teach their progeny the value of education? Aren't we perpetuating a bad situation, by saying it's the parents responsability to do X, when they themselves don't know how to do it?
It's easy to push the burden of on individuals, rather than society taking responsability to improve itself. In the long run, it's society as a whole that will suffer by perpetuating the lack of knowledge in a growing segment of it's population. Higher crime rates, lower overall wages, higher % children missing a parent, lower standard of living, larger % of an uneducated workforce, thus lowering commerce etc, are but some of the consequences.
Other countries are passing us by, in part by mantaining a higher education standard than ours for their citizens.
Good education is the grease of a well working society.

Harbeas, memestryker: the system IS the problem. Stop blaming parents! First let's examine teacher wages. Then let's look at the multiple standards across the nation for requirements for a high school diploma. Look at the impossible layers of management in a single school. We need more teachers in the classroom. Cut management in half and return these 'educators' to the classroom. Parents can only do so much helping kids to their homework. How many parents can help their children solve algebra problems? The 'system' must be overhauled from top to bottom with heads rolling.

Study after study in the sixties and seventies (most of which were then quickly buried and ignored) and probably those made today show that there is little or no correlation between the amount spent on education per pupil and the quality of the education. What makes the most difference is the attitude toward education in the home. Until and unless we can change the attitudes in the inner cities and the rural poor from the idea that education is for wusses, suckers and sissies to a necessary and desirable thing to have in your life, all the money that is thrown at the situation is a waste.

Yes, but in the 90's (reagan years) there were counter-studies disproving those 80's studies.
Unfortunately, those were also quickly buried and ignored or of course I would cite them in exact reference.
Agreed, you can't solve a problem by throwing money at it, which granted doesn't explain our mideast policy clearly.
You CAN solve a problem if you actualy work at solving it, which generaly means paying somebody to do something.

So how do we change the atidutes in the inner cities and rural poor?
The best way to do so, "IS" through educating future parents on the benefits of learning. Where do you do this? Obviously in school. Going around in circles here, aren't we?
We need to continue funding public schools. We also need to demand a change in how they teach, as it is rather plain to see right now, all in all, they aren't doing such a hot job. Just maybe we need to loosen the teachers rains a bit, and allow them to teach, kind of like letting a horse expend some energy at the start of a ride long overdue, rather than forcing them to spend their time covering their behinds against all constraints we put them under. That and bringing back some constructive discipline may help.

I guess many in this country don't what is exactly wrong with the country's education system.
It is nothing but SEX!.
Boys and girls are only interested in sex once they are in junior high through High school. They have willing teachers and those famous sports "coaches" who pick the best for sex.
Once if any go to college, they get free condoms for "Safe sex".
As for science & math, SAT scores & college, you guessed.
Who cares!!!!!!!!!

what a load of politically correct psycho-babble nonsense--articles like this and the NEA that promotes this psuedo-socialist garbage are the reason for lousy schools--i work with a lot of schools and the money spent has very little to do with the quality of the school..what does make a BIG difference the principal..a lousy principal coasting to retirement will drag everything down

Yeah. I'm sure yoy right that is all the darn people at NEA and pseudo socialist garbage that is the true reason for the lousy schools. Great insight.
Then, the zinger, it's the Principals fault, lazy son of a gun good for nothing soon to be retired socialist.
I do in truth agree with you on one point. It has little to do with how much money is spent, but rather, how that money IS spent. Forget for a moment the unequality of schools from district to district, way to much emphasis and money is lavished on "team sports" in high school, and their standing, sports wise, in the county/state.
I imagine you might be an advocate of private schools, affordable in general only to the higher income strata of society. Forget all about public schools, they aren't any good anyway.
Do you by chance have an idea of how to solve the dilema that a large portion of our kids are growing up lacking the tools to compete for work in a global marketplace, against kids that A R E educated?

Parents cannot be expected to be qualified to help their children at the high school level. Stop blame game here.
1. Foreign language training to start at the 5th grade level. Chinese, Farsi. No pass-fail from 5-8. Begin pass-fail at high school level training. Import specialist from countries of the language.
2. Comprehensive math training from K-8.
3. Standardized (National) testing across 50 states. No pass - no promotion to next grade.
4. At 9th grade determine academic or technical track based on previous grades and move student to appropriate training shool center established with specialized programs.
5. At 9th grade offer male/female schools with minimum number of schools based on integrated student body. Sex on the brain equals focus down the drain.
6. Stop giving HS students certificates of attendance as a substitute for diplomas.

I agree 100% with you.
Too many people don't see the forest because all the trees are in the way. They have no clue of the importance of education to children of all strata of the society. Its too hard for them to comprehend the consequences for society as a whole.
Its a shame really, we live in a country with unimaginable resources, and we will loose them to others because of ignorance and greed.

With the growing demand of the qualified nurses, it's the right time to get a nursing degree that will give you the chance to work as a trained nurse at the reputed medical facilities.
There are many career options for those who have a nursing degree with them.
