Other countries are very competitive, and if you don't make the grade, you are not getting the best education. If you make the grade, they provide even more government-funded freebies. They don't mainstream slow learners in their accelerated classes as the U.S. does to make it "fair."
China has moved ahead by recognizing that having a nation of different languages was ham-stringing them and insists all children learn English. If the U.S. doesn't do that, we'll be on an even faster track to the 3rd world.
The problem is the quality of parents--not the academics of our education system. It seems like measures such as better birth control (and abortion, for those who are not against it) availability, researching solutions to drug and alcohol addiction, more community-based mentoring/tutoring, and more focus on teaching parenting skills and responsibility for adults are some ideas of where to start.
