Americans "didn't always feel that way," according to Keating Holland, CNN polling director. "In 2001, 54 percent thought that the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be pleased with the state of the country today."

The Founding Father's would be impressed with how well the Constitution has preserved the principles of the Declaration of Independence and how well it has withstood the test of time. The would be impressed with how the country has evolved (through the civil rights court cases) to fall better in line with the principles of the Declaration.

I also think they would be saddened by the misuse of the Constitution to promote prejudice and oppression to many. Free speech has been abused in many ways. But, we have to protect it regardless. The right to bear arms, the same, but we have to protect it, etc. I don't think they could have envisioned this in any way. How we've evolved from the original has many good points obviously, but some not so good as well. Sorry for such a broad picture. I don't need to tell anyone how complicated the simple has become.

At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Benjamin Franklin told an inquisitive citizen that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention gave the people a Republic, if you can keep it. We should apologize to Mr. Franklin. It is obvious that the Constitution is just a shell of what it once was. Our Republic has diminished and we are wallowing in a pure democracy.

The job of the government is to provide liberty and protect liberty. The people are supposed to take care of themselves. Both in a personal way as well as in economic way. And we're not supposed to tell other countries how to live. That's what the Constitution dictates to us.
