Ani has a good point about governmental regulation. Part of the reason car get worse gas mileage today than 20 years ago is the added weight of things that are mandated by the government.

The average car today is 500 lbs higher than in the mid 80s. Mandatory air bags, ABS, third brake lights, redundant systems, etc, add up to quite a bit of weight. This is how your government helps with fuel economy.

What a disingenuous bunch of garbage. Even the car companies aren't trying that weak of a cop out. Probably because it's a lie. Tthe average car is NOT 500 lb's heavier. It has 500 pounds of stuff on it it didn't have back in the 80's, but it's not heavier. In fact, from '75 to '84, the weight of cars dropped drastically THANKS TO HIGHER GOV'T STANDARDS. Since then and due to the relaxing of standards in the eighties, it's barely changed. If we'd made them keep up the CAFE ratings, we'd be where we need them to be, and the industry wouldn't have even noticed it. Now, at this late date, you are still spouting the same industry crap they handed us back in the 70's. It was a lie then. Proven. You going to try and tell me it's not a lie now? You CONs think because thirty or forty years has passed that you can rehash the same old denial lies? WRONG.

Those early Civics didn't have a back seat an adult could sit in. I tried. It's a completely different car now. Only the name is the same.

That's right. Attack safety features. I'm sure that increased weight and gas usage was the goal. Good grief. Automobile manufacturers have engineering experts. Please don't insult their intelligence by using that.

My Dad told me 20 years ago that if the automobile industry wasn't in bed with big oil we would have the efficiency and the green technology we needed to make those changes, and train travel for products and people would still be a key factor. But no one wanted to step on anyone's toes and no one wanted to admit the major hit the world economy would take during the transition. Transition sucks. When are we going to make the choice to face it and just get it overwith.

I thought America was the great leader in the world of what's right and smart. I remember reading an earlier thread today that our forefathers wanted to set an example for the world. Well, you can't pick and choose. If you want them to watch then get it right so they'll follow suit.
