"Torture advocated, secret armies and prisons encouraged, ignoring habeas corpus for anyone pointed to and called "enemy combatant." Yet, non dare call it treason."

Treason? Of course not. I looked it up in the Official Republican/Neocon Dictionary of Terms. They call that "patriotism."

"Treason" is when you disagree with it.

Treason it is and Patriotism is ain't.

Investigate 9/11....demand answers!!!! All for oil.

Conspiracy was that Bush, Cheney and the rest of the Whitehouse thugs withheld vital intelligence before the vote on whether to attack Iran. There were no WMD and Saddam had no affiliation with Al Qaeda.

rightfrom, this is why we need Cheney's Energy Meeting minutes with Ken Lay declassified to see how the plan all along was to let something catastrophic happen to assume greater power and demand war for oil somewhere!

These Bushies should all be rotting in a foreign jail guilty of war crimes!

I suspect at some point after Obama takes office we'll get to see those minutes. Under Bush Im certain we would get edited minutes which might consist of sheets of paper with the middles cut out or as I more expect the paper shredders will be working overtime after November.

ICAM and I think we'll really learn the extent to which the Bush and the GOP have helped the right wing media prosper and vice versa once the Democrats have a larger majority and we can start hauling some of the Bushco enablers (particularly phone company execs and right wing radio stooges) in front of Congress to find out what they've been up to the last 8 years. The Justice Department scandal, in my view, reflects only the tip of the iceberg and I suspect much more criminality has helped the GOP maintain power for as long as it has. I would particularly like to know what the mega church establishment has been up to. ;-(

Your statement relies on the fact that you can see the future. If USA can, and did, elect an actor and carried on his legacy with his VP getting elected then why are people afraid of this man Obama ? He has to be better just because; name any reason you want.

The last time I looked there were 3 branches of government. One man can do more than 544? Anything Bush does, he has that many accessories. I lived through Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush. In each case there were detractors. Nothing changed materially. Lots of bureaucrats in government. It doesn't require clairvoyance to determine that not much will change again.

Name this law / act? Hint, it's not the PATRIOT ACT

                    This Law

The Center for National Security Studies issued an excellent [WWW]analysis of the bill, along with information on the [WWW]FBI and [WWW]trends.

The National Coalition Against Repressive Legislation summarized the bill in XXXX and the law as finally passed in XXXX. NCARL and others raised important criticisms:

Presumed guilty, secret evidence can be used Permanent resident aliens arrested under this law have to prove they should not be held in jail before trial. Secret evidence can used in the detention hearings and at trial that only the judge could see, not the defendant.

First Amendment protections weakened. The law lifts a 19XX Crime law restriction prohibiting the FBI from investigations based on speech or beliefs, when restricting humanitarian aid. Foreigners can be barred from speaking in the U.S. using McCarthy era McCarran-Walter Act provisions. An overbroad definition of terrorism virtually requires the Justice Department to select crimes to prosecute based on political beliefs and associations.

Presidential powers expanded. The President can label organizations -- without any appeal or review -- as "terrorist", and criminalize fundraising for humanitarian aid even remotely related to such groups

Punishment for lawful actions. Permanent resident aliens can be deported or indefinitely jailed for their affiliations or political activity, with no judicial review.

Constitutional protections eroded. The law further restricts the Bill of Rights' habeas corpus protections for state prisoners. Although this is a terrorism law, and death-row inmates were used to justify this provision, this affects all state prisoners, and no one convicted of federal terrorism laws. Prisoners are required to prove the state acted "unreasonably," a tough legal standard that isn't met simply by having credible evidence of innocence or wrongful imprisonment. Prisoners will be limited to one federal appeal within a short time of exhausting state appeals. Federal courts are required to render decisions within six months, and can't overrule state courts' interpretations of constitutional law.

More spending (meaning higher taxes and debt), and more police abuses. The law authorizes $1 billion in new federal spending over five years. The amount includes an additional $100 million for one of the most terroristic organizations in the United States, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Further restrictions on financial privacy. The law requires banks to identify any domestic "agents" (undefined) of groups labeled as terrorist, and freeze their funds with no right of appeal.

The original bill contained a provision, supported by the XXXXXXX administration, lifting the historical "Posse Comitatus" restriction on the U.S. military working with domestic police. The provision did not make it into the final version. (That would come years later.)

The law creates an oversight commission for federal police agencies. Even though the commission has no subpoena power and can only make recommendations, then-FBI Director Louis Freeh lobbied against the bill based on this one provision.

For bonus points who wrote this law?
