Who besides southern states have fire ants? I live in Florida and several years ago we didn't have any. I first heard about them then and a few years later I was fighting them. Nasty little critters. They have been known to kill a newborn calf. The way I tell a fire ant nest is to see the raged mound and when I brush it they swarm out all over the place. I then sprinkle the poison all over the mound and a couple of inches around it. I use the bait as well but still get mound once in a while.
