Google has dipped its toe in the virtual world launching an alternative reality website similar to Second Life. The plug-in service, called 'Lively', allows users to assume online characters known as avatars and wander around different settings from a coffee house to an exotic island.

      Update: I tried out the beta, and I'm quite impressed. Yeah, it's buggy and there are some lag issues, but I expect most problems will be resolved for the final release. I've got a lot of confidence in Google's programmers.

      Anyway, this is the most fun chat experience I believe I've ever had, and I'm looking forward to continuing to use it. It's so much more interesting and helpful when you can just walk up to a person and talk to them rather than sorting through an overwhelming number of simultaneous chat messages, as in a traditional room.
