updated: It is not due to the fault of Vietnam Airlines, but the Vietnam Civil Aviation Administration. The agency has not completed its project to strengthen its ability in supervising flight safety.

Vietnam Airlines several times has delayed the opening of a direct air route between Vietnam and the US to meet the US' flight safety requirements. The group planned to inaugurate the route this year.

The route may be opened in the first quarter of 2009.

The US Trade and Development Agency provided $1.4 million for a three-phase project to upgrade Vietnam's capability of controlling flight safety to meet international standards.

      Turkish Airlines starts Vietnam operations

Turkish Airlines opened its Vietnam representative office in Hanoi Monday and named the Huong Giang Aviation Service Company as its general agent in the country.

The carrier will joint Vietnam Airlines and Thai Airways to offer flights from Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City to Turkey's Istanbul capital via Bangkok, and then to other cities in the world, according to the airline's Southeast Asian regional director Bahri Yilmaz.

The airline is negotiating with agencies to offer ticket packages from Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City to European cities via Istanbul, the Viet Nam News Agency said.

Last month, Turkish Airlines forged partnership with Indonesian flag carrier Garuda to expand their market network in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

At present, Turkish Airlines operates one flight from Bangkok to European countries everyday.
