"Chertoff's comments on Capitol Hill comes as the country is entering a potentially vulnerable period with the presidential nominating conventions coming up next month; the presidential election in November; and the transition to a new administration in January all of which may be attractive targets for terrorists."

Trouble is, how (realistically) can you defend the entire coastline ?? Not all terrorists are mindless morons, some DO have a brain and as such, it would be VERY easy to drop ashore somewhere with whatever they wanted (unless it weighed too much).....
I have no doubt they're planning something for the elections, just hope that they get nabbed BEFOREHAND !!

The problem comes in when you have a mindless moron defending the border. THis isnt anything new, after 9/11 all that happened was a lot of rhetoric blaming anyone but the idiot in the White House. THe fact that this is being highlighted as a threat disturbs me and really makes me wonder about the people in charge. OR is this the equivalent of the terrorist alerts that Georgie used during the last election? How often has the color changed since then?

Chernoff speaks of "the terrorists" as if they are a coordinated group of mercenaries like Blackwater or the US Military.
As America's war on civilization continues and the number of civilian deaths grow I would have little doubt the number of people wishing to retaliate would also grow.

No doubt that there are people in this world who want to do us harm. However it is also the perfect time for republicans to start trying to frighten us again. It's a shame that has to be a consideration, but it is their favorite thing to do.

Chernoff say that European terrorists are trying to enter the country and they know this because 1) they are catching terrorists, 2) they heard that terrorists are trying to enter the country.
My comment above is more of a question. I am worried that the paranioa that seems to be the number one concern of your country will again produce a whole new bunch of laws that restrict the American people or allow the government to monitor all communications coming into or leaving the country, or even at times round up all visitors and detain them.
I don't mean this as an insult but I remember after 9/11 when all people from the Arab countries became suspect and were treated differently by the public and government, who says that this will not cause the same effect against any European person.

How about when some brainless US Senator started spewing lies about how the so called 9/11 terrorist crossed the Canadian border, mindless people started to freak that everyone crossing our border into the US was hell bent on blowing stuff up. Facts don't carry much weight in the US right now.

Are Americans so stupid as to fall for this kind of terror tactic? Face facts that the CIA or FBI are totally useless at stopping any group wishing to enter the US should they chose, people enter and leave the US in the thousands every single day with valid visa's and passports. It would be impossible to know their reason for entering the country and contrary to what they try to imply they are NOT mind readers. The simple fact remains if there were a terrorist group hell bent on causing havoc in the US it would already be happening but it is not. The CIA and FBI had full knowledge of 9/11 before it happened but LET it happen, that's proof that the terrorists at domestic in origin.

9/11 was an inside job. Those buildings were made to withstand earthquakes & plane crashes of that magnitude. There was no security in the bldg. the weekend before the attack and no one was allowed in except people doing wiring. Do U think they used a black ops team or what?????

"Chertoff's term as the country's second Homeland Security Secretary ends when a new administration takes over the White House in January".
Finally! Let's hope the next Homeland Security Secretary does something to keep us and the world safe besides baseless fear mongering. There's not one documented fact in the article. For the last 7 years the Bush administration has been the biggest recruiting tool the terrorists could ever hope for. Do I feel safer because of their misguided efforts? Hell no! The absolute lowest common denominator has risen to the top and tells me to take my shoes off at the airport. Bin Laden must be laughing his butt off at what stupid, stupid people we have chosen to govern us.

"Chertoff and other intelligence officials have delivered similar warnings before, and he offered no new information about specific threats or an imminent attack." - This is the IMPORTANT item in this article. FEAR! FEAR! FEAR! - keep banging the fear drum otherwise the American public might realize that the threat is not as dire as those people who are being paid by our tax dollars keep telling us it is. Then, they might have to find a real job.

one of the reasons Bush kept the Mexican border was to continue to use the scare card. How many do you think entered that way. They could have sealed that border for 8B but invade Iraq with no evidence and it is costing them close to
3Trillion dollars. $3,000,000,000,000

The fact is YES there are terroist organizations inside Europe planning to try to get into the US. Americans are to uneducated on what is going on in other countries to take the threat as real as it is. I understand the current administrations tatics to release such info at times where it may benifit them, BUT inNO way can the US ignore the threat because of the messanger. This week 4 were convicted in Germany for planning attacks there. We must also not forget that atleast 3 of the terrorist in 9/11 had met in Germany and studied there first. Europe is very liberal with their passes compaired to the US and even Germany is starting to look at the fact that their imigrants are not and do not want to mix in with the rest of society. They are very concerned with the rising number of Mosque and have admitted to having over 100 terror cells inside of Germany.

Sure, there are people who wish to do us harm, often in retaliation to the real or perceived impact of our policies abroad on their families, nations, religions, etc.
The tactics we now label as "terrorism" have been used by desparate, disenfranchised and plain evil people throughout recorded history.
But what is the real risk to me individually? I will face much more danger driving my car home from work today.
However large or small the real risk of terrorism is, the fact is it is not an existential threat to our nation. Yes there will likely be attacks, no matter what we do. The U.S. will go on, just as we have after 9/11. We are doing far more damage to ourselves by our paranoia and unreasonable fear.
Bankrupting ourselves trying to eliminate all risk is just plain stupid. We end up aiding our enemies by doing so.

Get a grip Jr, of course people hate the US, your government promotes that with it foreign policies every day but thinking someone is planing to attack the US and anything you or your government does will stop it is a wast of energy. Put pressure on your government to be less of a tyrant to the world.
