Those things are easy to say and hard to do. Especially number 2. Some people in the LA area have to commute over 60 miles to work because that is the only house they could afford.

Number 3 is very difficult depending on your location. Where do you go to get salvaged materials to build a house economically? Those are usually more expensive because they are bought more for looks that utility. At present those are the only ones being salvaged.

Those houses aren't so affordable, once they factor in how much they are spending on gas to go back and forth to work. Nor are those houses green - the commute factor is a pollute factor.

You have never priced the houses there I guess. A couple raised some children in a 3 bedroom house they had bought in the 60's for $20,000 and during the tax mess the assessment of their house was $500,000 and growing.

That is what the prices are in the cities there. Many large cities have similar problems. That land is very expensive.

Some people working in LA live in Lancaster. That is even farther. Up over a mountain range.

You need to live in the real world. Green is nice but it is many times not affordable.

In many large cities, there are inner-city properties which can be had reasonably cheap. One reason that many who work in LA live an hour or more away is that they would never consider living next so someone with a surname like Wong, Garcia or Jefferson. Maybe its OK that they pay through the nose for their bigotry. But inexpensive land can be had in many large cities.
