There ya have it. Maliki said it word for word.. And all the stories giving statements that it isn't true come from the US military... Seems to me like Maliki spoke what he really felt, and he got scolded by the hand that feeds him until 2009...

As if there were any question.
Well ... some of our nation's more gullible can be dissuaded I guess what with all the Propaganda being stoked by Agents of Disinformation.
It was announced this morning on Good Morning America that al Maliki did indeed endorse Obama's plan.
Good Morning America!!
The same organization that gave Goerge W. Bush $640,000 to his 2000 campaign!!
MAN ALIVE! The WHOLE WORLD is fed up with the Iraq fiasco!
Well .. .not our nation's Neo-Conservatives ... they see war as a Product of the Economy.
See how Morally Vacant Neo-Conservatism is?

you can read the interview in transcript form here:
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,151...
from the interview, verbatim:
SPIEGEL: Would you hazard a prediction as to when most of the US troops will finally leave Iraq?
MALIKI: As soon as possible, as far as we're concerned. U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.

This translation was not quite as assertive as Der Spiegel's original translation. But, it's clear that Maliki did say he favored the general timeline and the quicker the better.
Out of curiousity, if the headline is that the NY Times is confirming Maliki's comments...why isn't the story linked to the NY Times rather that DailyKos?
Just wondering about that old middleman rule thingamabob.

I posted the Kos link, as it included a lot more to the piece then just the NYT article. That and the NYT article buried the real juicy part(that they translated it and came to same conclusion) way down in the article, and basically ignored that bit.
As for the Middleman rule, it is more for stories that are near identical, or 100% copies of an original source. Which this clearly is not. as it includes much more to it than what the NYT article has/said.

I knew that Maliki's words had been correctly brought to the US news.
I have read Der Spiegel for years. It is a fiercely competent magazine, and I would sooner believe Der Mond ist auf Kase gemacht than that they would mistranslate a vital interview.
Especialy when it was recorded; and they stood by their story.
The Maliki 'denial' (the vague excuse given by an Iraqi government spokesman) was an after-thought; Maliki realized he had seriously stepped over his bounds.
This was a sort of test of the Emergency Spin machine of the republicans; not bad.
Just not good enough.

Amazing to see that the republican shill AG has managed to prompte her story to the top of propeller.
http://politics.propeller.com/story/2008/07/20/...
Guess propeller/netscape/AOL/Time warner/ right wing corporate conservative for profit knows where the money is. It's in promoting controversy.
Why report the news, when you can make the news. And AG makes news. Stupid lying news, but news that stirrs up the slumbering idiots who love to spew ignorance in the face of objectivity.
What evangelical doesn't like to see the scientist, with his 3 degrees and a life time of study trashed by a preacher who dropped out of 3rd grade. Get the preacher on TV, split screen to argue against what ever the scientist is saying.....that sells TV Commercials.
Its the controversy. And AG is the tip of the ignorant spear. She knows how to whip up a good tent revival.

Anti,
The right media? Please. What a crock. All three networks sent their anchors? This is nothing but a medai promotion of Barack. Anything reported on this trip, to me, is already suspect. The left media is making the news and not reporting it for sure.

It makes sense that Maliki would be backing Obama's plan. They have asked us to leave, after all, but a bird in the hand beats two in the bush, & Maliki is solely reliant on this administration for his continued 'power'. He can't very well bite the hand that feeds him & say anything positive that could slant our election to the administrations opponent. It's quite evident that pressure has been put on him to back peddle.
I don't know if there is a tape of his comments, but it would be nice if all this were put to rest. If there is a tape, it should be turned over to non political experts to analyze. (Although it's hard to believe that someone who speaks the language got it so wrong.)

''I don't know if there is a tape of his comments, but it would be nice if all this were put to rest.''
not necessarily
think of the 'wipe Israel off the map' misquote
I've seen that 'wipe Israel' quote used on here hundreds of times
the fact that Farsi experts say that it was 'regime must vanish from the page of time' or some such thing hasn't stopped the 'wipe Israel' misquote from flourishing
I'll even bet you a nickel you'll see it used on here repeatedly as soon as Iran comes back in the news

What exactly is the news here? Malaki and Obama and, incidentally McCain, all think American troops should leave Iraq when conditions permit... They all say the SAME thing... 18 months might be right, assuming conditions on the ground permit, in which case it would not be right and it might be sooner or later...

Can you believe that the argument is whether Der Spiegel misintrepeted the statement , then when it is revealed that the interpreter misinterpreter Maliki's statement, then we drift off into everything else.
AG and all you Bush backers-when you are faced with the facts, stop trying to spin them. Just admit you're wrong. It will make you feel refreshed. I know from experience, because I had a Bush backer acquaintance tell me that when he saw the light, why hell, he felt so good, he broke out in a song praising Obama! What more proof do you want than that?
If you can't admit that Bush baby has been a disaster for America, how can you make a sound judgement about anything?

Maliki, must be slow... Didn't he observe how Colin Powell was set straight? He doesn't know how to play with the big boy's, I see. Now repeat after me:Obama is the presumptive Democrat... McCain is the presumptive Republican... You must say only positive things about the Republican guy, get it? Now repeat after me...

If you want a list of people to expel from America for bigotry and greed that has hurt fellow Americans, then look at the list of neggers below... always the same ignorant bush sycophants! Congress needs to declare the RNC a terrorist organization and ban it! Then we need the truth in Telecommunications Act and Fairness Act (both opposed or vetoed by repugs) to be enacted to stop idiots like those below from perpetrating their Un-American hatred!
