It also doesn't say anything about what might or might not be on the planes. Most of the Soviet-era munitions are depleted or sold. The skill sets for maintaining this fleet are also gone. I'm not sure this is much of a threat.

I had the same thought immediately PHB.
A real trip down memory lane..
The first political activity I was involved in as main organiser..
Nothing surprising about this at all. Spheres of influence. The US stomped on what the Russians believe is theirs in Europe and probably correctly surmised that the US would be keeping an eye on them. This is the obvious response.
It will get worse before it gets better; it will be a huge test for the new US President.

Cuba is minutes from Florida. Russia sees itself as losing it's competitive edge as a deterrent to the American military. It looks like "grandstanding" because we are deploying those missile shields close to their borders. Let's see if someone calls their bluff.

Old, relatively slow, easy to detect and shoot down bombers are different from missiles.

I can't see the young president of Russia deploying OFFENSIVE hardware to counter radar which is DEFENSIVE. Unless, of course, there's more to this than we are being told.

I hope history doesn't really repeat itself.

A more dangerous threat is Dumbya asking, "Hey, what's in that briefcase you guys are always carrying around?"

The most dangerous threat to the free world is even considering McInsane as a President, because he KNOWS what's in that case.

If Bush can put up missile shields in Russia's backyard, why not Russians station bombers in Bush's backyard?

Why do we want the missiles and radar in Eastern Europe? Are we just poking the Bear? Whatever. No European, Asian, or African strike capabilities in the Americas. At all. Ever. For any reason.

It isn't missile shields silly. It is MISSILES. Bush wants to put missiles in the Russian backyard. Russia's response is to hint through un-named sources that they might just do the same.

BTW I hate the new Propellor look and function.

PHB: Cuba turning to the U.S. for help would be something! Talk about making history!

Question is, what would the Bush Admin do?

Allowing American tourists unrestricted access to Cuba would go a long way in warming relations and would be a boon for Cubans.

It is not WE installing a missile shield. It is Bush, the war monger with itching fingers to trigger conflicts that is doing.

God willing if there is a Democratic President in 2009, he should cancel everything and let Europeans protect themselves. Who would they protect themselves from?

To pretend as if Europe has made no enemies over two centuries of imperialism is naive. By the same token the idea of a missile shield is idiotic and Europeans are certainly capable of protecting themselves from outside forces when they are united as a single force. Unfortunately, the EU will just be another imperialistic force in fifty years or so if it ever gets off the ground.

This would violate the agreement the US and USSR signed concerning the Cuba. The US would consider this an act or near act of war. You would see our "retired" weapons systems such as the MX, F117 and Pershing II; ungraded and redeployed. While the Russians are flush with cash, their technology is still yesterdays. In fact, the FSS, replacement for the KGB, there are now as many or more Russian spies in the field. Once again trying to steal what they can't build. It is very much like the Cold War all over again.

Russia doesn't have to borrow money from China to fund its military!

it's only fair for them to. the only reason why the U.S. (us) would build a missle defence system in europe would be solely for the benefit of the companies who build them. LETS WASTE TAX PAYER MONEY ON MORE WEAPONS. DON'T THEY MAKE ENOUGH MONEY MAKING WEAPONS FOR THE CURRENT WAR. War is good for weapon suppliers. The europe project will be on the standby in case the current war ends. Big money corporate america ownes congress!!! So does the Oil Corporations.
The weapon suppliers hire ex military leaders and ex political people to get contracts from the govt. They will use the news media to scare us into thinking that our national security is threathened.
Talk about tax payer money wasted. Talk about HOME LAND SECURITY. What a waste. But look who runs it. Congress.
