I agree gamahuche. I said to Sumptuous last night that unless substantial changes are made I don't think I will be checking back in. very often. Although I have been busy lately, I always popped in here and there. In fact I was looking forward to getting "caught up" here during my break- I was missing the great chats.

Alas, that plan has been scrubbed. If my friends start migrating to another site, just drop me a line to let me know where you are all hanging out. :( -

Heck, Gama, I hope that my music submission wasn't among the spam! Though I agree, as good as the song was and the fact that it did get close to forty props from real members, it didn't deserve to be on the front page for over ten hours!
Okay, I've noticed you are particularly stringent on one complaint and its a good one. The PMing feature seems to have been removed. I don't believe this is the case; it appears to me its merely been moved. To PM enter the person's profile you wish to PM and in the upper left hand corner of the screen an option to Send Message should exist. That should let you send a PM to that member.

I think they are doing some fixing of the problems right now. I just wish they have beta tested it first. Anyway, I have made a redesign, so the guys up at the Prop office won't accuse us of just complaining and not giving any solutions. Check it out guys and lets give them a piece of our minds.
P.S. here's the link to the story.

I am reminded by George Harrison's song, "All Things Must Pass" and I can't help but feel the loyal users of the former Propeller are being treated much like poor George was. In other words, pushed to the side with our input ignored.

While there are plenty of bad things to say about the redesign (and they are all getting said), I did want to make two points. First, we are definitely listening to every scrap of member feedback--in the threads, feedback inbox, site mail, and email. Our dev team is already revisiting certain features and we will be restoring some of the deleted ones very soon. We understand your frustration, and hope you will stick around long enough to give Prop 2.0 a fair shake after its bumpy debut. There are some gains here (Propeller Search, Groups, and what is projected to be a major performance upgrade, once the dust settles) and we are determined to fix bugs at record. Oh, and just for the record, nobody deliberately removed any of the earlier anti-Propeller stories. It has never been our policy to quash criticism. It looks like a spam-suppression feature may have glommed onto certain comments and stories by accident. We are fixing that right now, and it will not happen again.

James,
I'm willing to hang around for a while to see if things improve.
I have to ask: Were all the wholesale changes made necessary? I certainly do not mind a new look and the features you mentioned are nice additions. But couldn't the previous format have been tweaked to accommodate those additions?

A moral lesson the folks who run Propeller could have used before launching this mess.
Reply
Here's a few of those lessons that were obviously 'overlooked'.
• It's the community, stupid.
• Many players don't experience a persistent online world as "a game." They experience it as "my life." An online world's hardcore players view themselves as citizens. Some want to be good citizens, some bad, but the entire core wants to believe they belong to something permanent.
• Big changes after launch drive away existing players and make newcomers mistrust you.-

Especially when there was little warning. One day I had about a bajillion friends and the next --none. Not a huge deal, because I basically just communicated with them on the threads and I have a real life, but what about those for whom Propeller was their major social outlet?
Again, the missing "my participation" link and the inability to see beyond the first 25 comments make this site nearly useless for its intended purpose -- a discussion of issues.
I'll give it a week, but I am actively looking for other places to comment.

I wanna share a link to a story about what happens when you make subscribers unhappy and then ignore and attempt to silence them.
A moral lesson, if you will.

Hello, Participation is now activity on the sidebar (from your profile link). It appears you have 65 friends, 7 idols, 282 fans. idols are people you added but have not added you, and fans are people who have friend requested you, but you have not added them...etc. Friends are mutual adds. You do have your privacy settings set so most people can not see your friends.
We have fixed the comment paging issue also.
Thanks for being patient with us. Please let us know if you run into any more issues.

The stories are starting to look better, and it seems less ********** to load the pages than it was before. Odd quirk in the message center, anything I write all gets pushed together into one paragraph. For example:
This. would.
end.
up.
Looking like this:
This. would. end. up.

I did a spoof about Obama s*elling things with his logo on it amd it was considered spam because the few words like B- uy and others were there.
So if you ain't B- uying a debate on here you misght want to use another term,
I thought the community did a pretty good job of telling the staff about spammers. Now we have become the spam of we use the wrong words in a post.

I would hate to see any of you guys go, we have had some good conversations and even fights on here. I am staying and I am asking all of you to do the same...this is just new and most people don't like change, however, if nospindave or libsrfun or Ag or any of my friends on the left were to leave this wouldn't be the same experience. Propeller please get this corrected and soon. My Plead to all of you it to give them at lease a month after all they have really been good to us and James deserves better he is really a good person...well he did get last weeks review totally wrong by not mentioning Tony Snow but where else can you rip a guy like James and have him say hi the next day and joke with you like nothing happened. NO I AM NOT BEING PAID...while i disagree with lots of you on here it doesn't mean I hate or dislike any of you. Truth is i enjoy each and every one of you. So please give it some time!

This is probably going to take some getting used to. Suspect that there are some "tricks" that nobody knows that will make it work better. The old site had it shortcomings-- randomized placement of posts, etc. ; but this verion seems to go out of its way to aggravate. Rather than an official bug-swatter, think that this will require unbanning DDT, an army of programmers, and several psychiatrists.

What can I say? This sucks. Over the last couple years I have grown to love propeller as well as it's members. Even the rabid libs that I would fight with to what seemed like no end. You will all be missed. I really hate that it has come to this but I have no interest in attempting to navigate this abortion of a news site. Anyone wishing to contact me knows what site I will now be on. So unless I find out that things here are once again back to normal, this will be my last post. And I will leave you with this.

Okay, the commenting mechanism has now started to improve. I know that for a fact, because I was unable to comment myself until about 15 minutes ago. Now look for a revised and streamlined comment format, and the return of a few other cherished features. We really are working on this stuff, as fast as possible.

okay, but why did you launch this without announcing that the day was here ? We just came on and BANG! I thought I was at the wrong URL with a site that was still under construction. It doesn't look finished.
Why launch when you knew (or should have known) there were still such obvious glitches -- the inability to post, the inability to go beyond the first page of comments.
You kept telling the community how great the new Propeller was going to be. I thought you were going to address such issues as the random placement of posts, the double comments, the double words at the line wrap, the pokiness of the page loading. Instead, there is a totally new (and not particularly attractive) interface, everyone's avatars are gone, everyones' friends are gone, everyone's history is gone. How did you think this would result in a warm reception?
I admit that I am not on the site 24/7 so perhaps I missed the user surveys asking us what we liked about Propeller and what we felt needed improvement.
Or, perhaps like the liberal politics that Propeller is obviously skewed towards, you just believed you knew better about what we would want and need than we did.
This re-vamping might very well have been a really good idea, but, boy the execution of it is a true fiasco.
The only way for change to work is to make the people most affected by the change believe they own it. This was SO foisted upon us, that now, in addition to having to get your users learn how to navigate the changes, you have overwhelming resistance to overcome.
Good job, James.

There really should have been some instructions as to purpose of design. It really seems a bit of a mess....BUT.......don't totally give up. I only had to take off half a day to figure the entry into this schumozel. I actually see some merits to the design and as with all new changes...WE HATE EM'.......but eventually get used to the different approach and deal with it. -

I have never been a quitter and have grown to enjoy the comments and personalities of the propeller members , so to make it short and sweet I will not jump ship just yet and I hope that those who I have come to enjoy will make the effort as well. I thought that the site really sucked this morning but am trying to get familiar with the new format.

Those who I have come to admire on here may not share beliefs on alot of topics but I feel most are strong enough to give this a try. For those of you who decide that this is not your thing I would like to thank you for your comments and ideas in the past and it has been indeed a pleasure to know you even if we have never met . I wish all of you the best in your lives and wish now that I had made an effort to get to know some of you better . Once Again to those who are leaving Thanks for the moment.-

I don't understand why they implemented this lame new design without asking the users! The administrators probably think that most Propeller users are aged 6-12. Otherwise I can't explain why they put that Cartoon-styled dork as a maskot of the website. Propeller users are serious people who don't need a cartoon design.
I believe that now most people will leave for other social websites that don't treat their visitors like children.

I HATE it! I keep waking up hoping I'll see the REAL Propeller return with all the people I've come to enjoy their views and all. I left another group I had been involved with for a long time because of such a drastic change, and that wasn't even as bad as this one. Why completely change something that was working so nicely? seems everything has a few bugs to work out, but that's life, you don't scrap it and start over. I can't upload an avatar either and many other things. yeah...my opinion? this totally sucks, and I feel lost here. -

I have only been around propeller for a year and a half. I started participating on the old Netscape.com and stayed with propeller. But is new format is not very user friendly and it has more glitches than the old format. I have tried numerous times since Tuesday to post comments and NOTHING has posted. Most times when I have attempted, I got that ridiculous “500 message.” And when I didn’t get that and thought I had posted, my comment was “lost in the ether!” In fact, according to my profile page, I have NO RECENT ACTIVITY!
Why did these website designers throw the baby out with the bathwater?
I certainly hope the “brains” behind this change will take some constructive criticism. Please bring back the old propeller and make some subtle changes to THAT format (for example: I DO like the idea of groups of interest).
If propeller doesn’t revert back or to a more user-friendly format, I will go somewhere else. The freinds I’ve made on propeller will need to send me an e-mail at easterlyscott@aim.com or find me on another website yet to be determined.
This really is so sad and it did NOT have to be this way…..

Yeah that is pretty sad.
Let me repeat myself:
Wrong:
-Colours; Blue and Red don't go together, and you can use more coloures and tones than that, just look at the variety of tones now. Sad.
-Logo; What is this thing, some kind of AOL Bacteria Virus? That is what it makes me think of. Bring back the propeller, for propeller.com. Makes sense?
-Pictures, the only real picture you have is some black and white AOL CEO or something, just go back to the old layout, it did things right with images and stuff.Right:
-Nothing.I think this was to try to dissociate AOL with Netscape. Why? Netscape was good, that is probably why half the people came here, it was the last thing they had left. Now, they make it more AOLish, I really feel like leaving, especially with the loss of satisfaction and functionality. I wonder how this crap happened.

Seeing some improvement but it is improvement to a poorly designed end product. When they took away the ability to navigate by page and removed the ability to see your own Recent Comments they essentially destroyed the process. If there are 500 comments on a story it takes a ridiculous amount of time to see the latest comments. Why bother? Fine to make changes but be aware of the consequences. It's like they put this out without any Q/A or input from anyone who actually uses Propeller. Inexcusable, I hope someone is reading these complaints. If I had an income based on this site being used I would be working 24 hour days to get it fixed. Otherwise it will become a wasteland.

So why is it when everyone talks about big brother, they claim it's the evil conservatives when it's almost always a lefty. Free speech only counts when it's protecting their stand on an issue.
As to function, it seems like they've finally solved a few problems. But the format still sucks. What did they do? Have a jr. high kid design this minimalist piece of garbage?

Gam, and others:
I was told that the prob with being able to view only the first fifty comments in any thread is being worked on.
Ditto the absence of any activity on members Activity pages.
One problem, perhaps not mentioned, as that the new look lacks visual variety--those little story pictures, even if clipart, helped to define the pages in an interesting way.
One good thing about the re-do--it's brought "friend" and "foe" together. Who knew that I'd feel a pang at Tang's sign-off?

3rd day - still not favorably impressed. Still suffering disbelief that someone would put something up live that has SOOOOOooooooo many problems. Conventional wisdom is that you test your software BEFORE you release it for use. And although James has allowed as how they have done this and that, and are trying to work out bugs and flaws, there doesn't seem to be any explanation of WHY the sudden radical change. Instead of some updating and upgrading, it's a COMPLETELY different thing. It's kind of like swapping out a spreadsheet for a word processor. Some of the same functions can be accomplished, but it's not convenient, it's not clear, it's not familiar. It's an error.

Okay, it was a success (the experiment that is)! Gama, it appears to me that the way the coding works is that replies to comments are not considered comments for the "Next 25" option. Therefore, we have maybe 40 "comments" and loads of things classified as replies. Or, and this is another possibility, we have loads of stuff removed as "spam" that is not counting towards the comment total with regards to how many times you have to proceed to the next 25 but is still being displayed in total number of comments. Either way it seems you CAN view the full thread and if you still can't go to the RSS Feed (little orange box with three curved white lines).

Goodbye. Maybe I will check back in a week or so.
Propeller, this was a very poor execution and launch of a revised product. I think before you start a new project that you hire a manager that knows how to oversee and launch that project. This release is worse than if Microsoft had introduced it.

I have this to say to Propeller's software developers -
Do this in proper order -
Debug first, then go live.
If you do not follow this practice IN ORDER people will want to string you up. Debugging live is weenie for Micro$oft and it's weenie when you do it, too.
