Comments for Propeller. Fail. »
Posted By DiffeeOnline 1 year, 5 months ago in Science & TechnologyThe reviews are starting to roll in. There are only two possible conclusions so far: either the community will need some time to get used to the new changes over at Propeller, or the changes were a bad move. The initial feelings of the community can best be described when you look at the current (as of 12am PST 7-23-08) top front page story. Here is a screenshot:

OH MAN, I am totally disappointed with Propeller.
I understand that much effort is made for improving the site, but this actually is the worst thing that they have ever done!
I am BEGGING the AOL team to revert Propeller back to it's original state.
WHY?
1. Members' Benefits
It's very clear, the majority of the users hate it. Propeller is going to a significant amount of its current members if this continues on - including me.2. Search Engine Friendliness
I considered myself experienced in SEO (search engine optimization).
And the new Propeller are NOT search engine friendly at all.
Propeller will lose much traffic from Google and Yahoo, I am 210% sure about this.
Propeller doesn't stand a chance against Digg if this carries on. The previous ones are much more user-friendly compared to Digg.I can predict 2 things will happen if Propeller decides to carry on with it's current state:
1. At least 50% active users will leave and become inactive.
2. A lot of TRAFFIC LOST from Google, Yahoo. The outcome: Propeller Alexa ranking will drop from 863 to 10,000.

Im still trying to figure whole thing out. I find it rather confusing and I had just gotten used to the old format. It kinda feels like I'm the person who had just finished cleaning up a big mess and all of a sudden drunken coke fueled monkeys are released in the room with a pile of mud.

The "new" propeller represents a massive failure to understand why the majority of propeller users participated in the site. We were NEVER very interested in the "front page", but rather in the active back and forth discussion and comments. One could learn a lot from those debates.
The "new" design massively degrades capability and user friendliness for participation in active commentary.
POOR visual design: too much white space; much more scrolling, clicking and paging (often very slowly) required to see the same information; nested commentary threads where a majority of comments cannot be seen without endless clicking, .....
POOR choice of categories. The most popular ones have disappeared and/or been fragmented into numerous user groups, where the fragmentation is likely to make them become much less active than previously (the stellar example is politics).
ELIMINATION of some of the most useful tools. For example, elimination of "recent comments" from user pages. These were essential for discussions extended over multiple online sessions and a crucial tool (usihg recent comments of friends) for finding where the interesting discussions were happening.
etc, etc.
Propeller will not survive by showcasing 10 "interesting" (or not) front page stories and has just alienated a large part of its active user base by massively crippling the capabilities for back and forth commentary and discussion.

I was busy yesterday and wasn't on the internet, but this comes as a real surprise and I have noticed that some of the negative stories have dissappeared. I was trying to read comments and when it prompted me for the next 25 I could not get any more comments. I was on propeller for the exchange of ideas and opinions which meant I liked to read all comments. After trying to navigate my way around this here this morning I have a feeling that someone has shot a hole in the bottom of the boat ,so to speak.

The look is so generic. They took away the personality that propeller once had. It is a pain to work your way through trying to find stories that your friends have submitted and any message that you send to a friend is public .

Who ever thought up these changes must have never read many of the comments posted by the members of propeller, the comments of we the people . What I noticed from both the right and left was the concern about how we the people felt on issues. In most cases it was through our comments that we tried to arrive a the truth and although sometimes the debates were heated usually sanity prevailed,. right now I feel that our community has been invaded and all my rights are gone.

I just waded through all 34 pages of "new" propeller. Waded - I mean in thigh-boots, through the slop..
There was virtually NOTHING there apart from floating garbage. A LOT of the kind of stories that I never liked seeing on the front page of the REAL propeller - lots of sock-puppet votes, no content - and a lot of absolute total crap. And everyone of these stories had a rating of 9.6 or higher.. Out of what, a million?? Hardly a comment between them after page 6 or so.l
(Meanwhile a few poor friends are trying to continue as "normal" and have posted some good stories..and they barely show through this sludge and filth that surrounds them}.
Maybe a dozen - at MOST - stories that might have been interesting but multiple repetitions and many stories that shouldn't have emanated from any orifice, even a posterior one. And virtually NO comments.. maybe it just wasn't working??
I tried to post to one poor fellow, damnedviper's second attempt today - the first had apparently abused the TOU by criticising "new propeller" and been removed.. and failed to post, despite trying half a dozen times.
This all takes me back to the days when this was first being discussed and after some initial trepidation amongst many members on one thread, there was a second thread when we were promised that indeed an incredible amount of thought and effort and planning were going on and we would undoubtedly be delighted with the results - and that our concerns and opinions were being taken notice of.. It was used as a carrot during the worst technical failure period.. Just wait and see what's in store for you!!
I believed it!
And now we've REALLY been taken for a ride.
Like getting abused by a hohoho Father Christmas!
And the very WORST thing?
As far as I can see we've actually LOST access to OUR friends - the people that we individually chose to have little back-room discussions with or to share some personal part of our lives with. With no warning we can't access them unless we were close enough or careful enough to also get an e-mail address for them..
AAAARRRGGH!-

I am also upset by the loos of access to friends, the duplicate and triplicate posting, absolutely NO improvement in loading times and, what I miss most -- the My Participation Link. I have had discussions that have continued for days as we go back and see if anyone else commented the next day, if they did you answer, and then they answer and so forth.
Oh well, I guess it will make my husband happy -- there's really no reason to bring the laptop to bed, anymore.

The PMing feature still exists as near as I can make out. I was recently communicating with Dandt 1612 in PMs at least. To PM go into the member's profile (the one you wish to PM) and select "Send Message". That SHOULD allow you to PM someone.

type your comment hereYeah I noticed the Forum Nazi's were out in full force over the issue.
Apparently all dissent must be crushed.
This IS identical to the NGE fiasco at Sony.
If this kind of censorship is what they have planned I will have no further use for Propeller, AOL nor any of their affiliates.

Most of us either work or have a lot of other responsibilities that don't give us the leisure time to plow through a complicated format.
We need it upfront, right before our eyes. A quick read to see if it interests us.
And the "25" next comments is arcane. First of all, these comments at present are lost. Secondly, what is wrong with good old page numbers, so we can refer back to something?-

I've tried working this two days in a row and it's a total failure as far as I'm concerned. I can't reply, it's locks up. I've left a comment and it never posts, so either the new format has tons of flaws or they're restricting conservatives. It's very difficult to see my own posts. I'll give them until the end of the week but I suspect my activity here will come to a close.

I feel betrayed. This new look is cool in the eyes, but somehow, this has removed all the identity propeller once had. I think they overdid it. This is what happens when you try to look at the competition so much to determine your strategies. Also even if many of the features that were there before were still present the interface is just not intuitive.
Propeller has also thrown their loyal visitors down the drain by having them start on square one with everything. The new algo looks promising, but is a little confusing. limiting the rating on a scale of 1 to 10 just does not work for me. Now everything is a ten.

There are many things to say about the redesign, some of them justifiably negative. However, I would like to clarify one thing immediately. The other stories were not removed because they were critical of Propeller--we have always left such stories in place. They fell afoul of what was supposed to be a spam-suppression feature, which we are working hard to fix. Many apologies for their disappearance.

As well, the new 1-10 pt. algorithm is impenetrable.
Reply
Looking back through my stories I found a 5.0 equaled 99 votes and 15 comments and it also equaled 177 votes and 51 comments. A 1.0 equaled 125 votes and 9 comments and also 212 votes and 12 comments while a 1.1 equaled 99 votes and 11 comments.
In order for an abstraction like 1-10 to work people have to understand it and there's no understanding this.
Of I were to hand a student a paper that I'd graded "Q", they would rightly be confused and rightly want to know what Q meant, and if my reply was "Oh, it's taking a lot of different variables into effect." I'd likely have a VERY angry student on my hands with a "grade" that meant as much as a random squiggle.
Please, JamesMarcus, remove this. Just remove it. Do some beta testing with members of the community, fix it, make it right.-

Okay, using the RSS Feed I managed to read even all the invisible comments on this thread! AG hissed, for example, where as Dandt wondered about the "Groups" feature. Firstly, Dandt, I believe the group feature is less about friends and more about sharing stories more easily. Instead of specific users, you share them with specific groups. Like I invited you to one that is, honestly, essentially my friends list so I could more easily share stories with those I want to share stories with in the first place. Politics is a group you share political stories with and so on. Now, Ind, you mentioned the incomprehensible algorithm. Now, this is a guess, just a guess and it could be wrong... however, I believe it is probably determining an average of views/props/comments a minute or hour and rating from that so we don't have three year old stories on the front page because of all the props they received. It actually seems like a very nice way to go about it. Anyway, I hope that answers to questions that were asked... if I'm wrong, I'm sure James will let you know. I'm just guessing on these things.

OK. None of my activity shows up so if I do actually get a comment submitted, I can't later look to see if anyone responded to it. It also doesn't show if I have voted for a story or any of my activity so I can't track back to stories that I liked and see how the debate ended.
This is terrible.

I also find this change to Propeller to be disruptive and uninspired. The old saying of " Don't fix it if it "aint" broke, certainly applies here. Change for the sake of change rarely ever works out well. Nice try and all, but don't you think it's time to go back to the Propeller we, the users enjoy?

We can whine all we want about how things suck, but unless you give them ways of how to change it you're just putting more stress on these guys. I'll make the first move (excuse me if a post like this was already made).
Things that can stay: Propeller logo is fine. It's more 60's then propeller, but that's fine. The little man, I guess he can stay. Sure, why not. You paid someone to design him, he can stay.
Things to change: The colors. Something that echoes the previous color scheme. You should have done a little more homework, gradual change works best. Give us back our colors. That shouldn't be too hard to code and arrange graphically.
The layout needs a bit more work in another direction (what you've done is fine, but for a totally different audience. This is why it "fails" for propeller users). I know it's minimalism, but this is still a news oriented site. Feels like it something missing, slightly empty, which is a terrible impression to give someone -especially- when you're dealing with change. You should have thought this out just a tad bit more, or at least your graphic artist. Give us more visible structure, and colors of the old. This might be harder to code and rework, but you want to keep your audience right?
I really hope the propeller team reads this and tries to remedy the flaws I've felt. Anyone else got something to add?

Oh this is absolutely dreadful. Not only is the format terrible but it has not been tested. Being a retired IT developer, i am disgusted. Many topics are missing. "The next 25 comments" gives you the same screen with no option to try again. My previous posting (containing no naughty words) never made it. By all means if you have something good then add extra features but don't totally revamp it. If it ain't broke then don't fix it!

Another blind post, as I put them out and rarely see them again. The whole "next 25 comments" thing svcks. There were 500 comments on a board yesterday but it took five minutes to see the latest. If the server didn't crash first.
Where are the pages? Where is the option to view most recent first? If you are not going to have individual pages this is a must. And where are my "recent comments". This format is simply not workable, by the time you get it tweeked half the members will be gone. In my industry we use alpha sites to test new software. That could not possibly have been done. And the alpha would have been a current Propeller member. They would have had some salient comments. If I worked for Propeller I would really be concerned. You run off your users and what's left? I might give this a week but if there is not major improvement I am out of here for good.

I like the old Propellor much better. This new format is too busy, and childish looking. The elimination of the article category (Music, Sports, Humor) is a big disappointment. I automatically overlook anything to do with Sports.... now I have to read the headlines, and some of the text to find out what the topic is. That's a waste of time. I like the old condensed format where there were many articles on one page, not just ten.
Seems there's extra steps now, too. Used to be able to click on View Story and get right to the frame housing the article... now you click on the headlines, then have to click on another link. Again, big waste of time. I'm afraid this is not going to be working for me.
I wonder if anybody tested this using Firefox.... it would appear not. The type is too large, the rating number is huge, and that and the submitter overwrites the article's teaser text.
It wasn't broke -- why did you need to "fix it"????

Please look up Sergio Zyman.
Why? Because you just topped him as the dumbest, well read this.Sergio Zyman is best known as the marketer behind New Coke, labeled "the most disastrous product launch since the Edsel" by Forbes Magazine.
Zyman and the marketing team at Coke did not adequately consider consumer loyalty to " Classic Coke" resulting in a major public relations failure and a product re-call.
This was the high-light of the Cola wars and enabled Pepsi to establish itself as an equivalent player at the cost of Coke's marketing mis-steps.

I remember when netscape switched over to the new propeller format(propeller later split off to it's own domain) and I hated it, at first. They kept saying to give it some time to get used to it. Pretty soon, I was used to it and loved the new format. I figure the same applies here too...
Give it a week or 2 and see what you think

have only been around propeller for a year and a half. I started participating on the old Netscape.com and stayed with propeller. But is new format is not very user friendly and it has more glitches than the old format. I have tried numerous times since Tuesday to post comments and NOTHING has posted. Most times when I have attempted, I got that ridiculous “500 message.” And when I didn’t get that and thought I had posted, my comment was “lost in the ether!” In fact, according to my profile page, I have NO RECENT ACTIVITY!
Why did these website designers throw the baby out with the bathwater?
I certainly hope the “brains” behind this change will take some constructive criticism. Please bring back the old propeller and make some subtle changes to THAT format (for example: I DO like the idea of groups of interest).

If propeller doesn’t revert back or to a more user-friendly format, I will go somewhere else. The freinds I’ve made on propeller will need to send me an e-mail at easterlyscott@aim.com or find me on another website yet to be determined.
This really is so sad and it did NOT have to be this way….

I was shocked to see this, like W T F ??????????, now shock is gone, I'm aggravated and sad that I will miss so many people here that I've come to like and respect their views. If it stays this way, I'm gone, I don't want to 'get used to this' except for a few little bugs sometimes of the past Propeller, why mess with something that was great? and this isn't even messed with, it's a complete change basically, DRASTIC!!! I mean did someone new do this???

I can't believe you guys ruined this entire community. This page is not working. You can't see any comments beyond the first 25. I also have 997 messages in my Messages folder. It appears to be every PM sent to me since the change from Netscape.
Sure we bickered and fought but we also often posted in agreement of one another, met new posters, and saw a variety of views, that is what we came on these boards to do. Today I can't communicate with anyone, not even person to person.
Whoever (?) approved this change understands little about the fragility of web communities. Users will scatter far and wide, seen it before. No one comes on these boards hoping to deal with technical issues. It's been three days and my patience is near the end. I have seen little improvement and certainly no blanket statement on the homepage recognizing the anger you have created. Running and hiding isn't the solution. Someone should be terminated and the page returned to its former state. I am waiting till Monday then bailing if I don't see major improvement. I don't think I am alone. Of course I won't be able to tell because I won't be able to view this message or any of the responses to it. Great job!

And I am this close to taking this off my homepage. (are you just going to have to imagine there being a very minuscule gap between my forefinger and thumb)
It is a very depressing sight to boot up too, I thought my browser was having an error the first time, but, it was worse apparently.

I'm not a frequent contributor, but have a few times and I do like to read daily. I don't know about all the ins and outs of the old system or the new system. What I did like a lot ,(and I don't know if anyone else has already commented on this, ) but before I could read the banners and choose what topics were of interest to me very easily. I can't do that now at a glance. I won't participate in the new format. I want to see the topics at a glance and not search for them.

You've got to be kidding this is the new Propeller or Netscape or whatever? This is an abomination. It's the most childish thing I've EVER seen. I'm going to miss My Netscape and will finally have to move on. Employees and staff at Netscape, I've always loved you and stuck by you, but this is horrible.

Strange looking interface --not at all intuitive. I suspect that there are some tricks in there to make it work better; but how we'll learn them we'll never know.
Things that I miss from the older version:
* The page feature. With this, it looks like the only way to get to comment 121 is to go through all the others and keep clicking next 25. Lots of wasted time, Though not foolproff, the old page feature was very useful.
* Replies. I can't seem to make the reply to comment work. I click reply and it sends me to the same place as a new comment and not under the original comment that I was replying to. Maybe there's a trick to it.
* The integration between the messages/profile section and the comment section seems poor.Dealing with a new anything is not always easy; but these changes seem to have made a special point to aggravate. I'm betting that the main architect of these changes had his/her own ideas and never really watched how the old version was used. Otherwise, it's hard to see why some of these changes were made. Overall, I'd give this "upgrade" a D.

I think the new interface is cute :) too bad it isnt SEO friendly and connection is still dropping. I'm pretty sure that this will be alright once the admin guys get everything fixed.

Maybe you guys should wait for a couple of days, who knows, you might like what they're going to do to the site. Of course they know what's gonna happen if they don't improve. Stop complaining for a while and enjoy the changes! -

None of my comments went through yet. I have made several attempts. This will be my last.
To James Marcus, Tom and the CEO Randy Falcon:
You guys care nothing about the wants and input of the members who have been loyal to Propeller and its myriad of technical problems. After all the promises and lies, this is what you present; a cheap more automated and less functional site.
If you keep this rotten program going, you will end up with what you deserve; a black hole in cyberspace.
Chow. I am done with Propeller.

What was wrong with the old format? I was getting used to it. I want to see a lot of stories of substance, new or old format. They should put them in order of oldest to most recent or vice-versa. A lot of the posts were not important and if I read them, they wouldn't be important next week or couldn't even remember what they were about in a few days. Some remind me of the ads I get via e-mail.

I am disappointed and less inclined to participate in future.
One complaint for starters....referencing commentary on past stories has become problematic and/or impossible.
I do not understand the reasons for these changes. Perhaps there were needed improvements but I dont think this is it. Overall, of all the many places to forum, this one just lost some value for me.

Just tried to navigate through comments and it is a brutal failure.. I'll check into propeller perhaps in time to see if there are improvements--otherwise, it may be time to say bye-bye to propeller. Too bad, it was fun while it lasted.

Hello,
In addition to everything discussed above, I happen to be one of those "old timers" who still uses Netscape v7.2 email. I have been using various versions of Netscape for over 10 years now, always finding it to be more stable, more reliable, and less prone to viruses, than its counterparts (Outlook, etc.).
Previously, Propeller v1.0 would display an introduction page with various links to Propeller articles when I started using my client based email. This gave me the incentive to visit those links and join into the discussion.
But this is what is always displayed now:
404: Page not Found
Sorry, but the page you are looking for has not been found. Try checking the URL for errors, then hit the refresh button on your browser.
PROPELLERWhat happened to my introduction link on my Netscape email client? While I may be one of the few that still uses Netscape v7.2 browser, it still happens to be the best combination all-in-one systems: browser, email client, spell check, and html webpage editor all wrapped into one. Most especially, the html webpage editor is far more advanced than any supposedly free ones I have found, and it's truly free.
My efforts to find a newer system (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, etc.), have been a failure to find such an all-in-one browser. With that said, I will refuse to upgrade (downgrade?...) to any of these others until such a thing does finally exist.
This poses the problem of enduring continued announcements of this horrible 404 error, and the ugly cartoon man with the stupid propeller cap, when ever I use my email.
Prior to Propeller's existence, the introduction page on my email client directed me to Netscape's news website, which I used sometimes. But Propeller came along (replacing Netscape's startup page), and it became part of my day to day life instead of the occasional visit to Netscape's news website.
Please, at the very least, fix this small problem. It's just a missing supported web link, and can be restored with little effort.

I've been away for a month and just got back to find propeller unusable, the changes seem to made a reasonable site into a quite bad site, the option to give a story a neg is gone as are most of the links to stories I had commented on,in my profile. bye bye propeller.

There is indeed a lot of garbage and screen clutter. A leaf should be taken from Google's books - less is more. People like it that way.
