The rays from the planned U.S. radar base in the Czech Republic can be reflected off a plane or inversion strata and threaten people, an expert group said in a study passed to CTK - the Czech Press Office - today.

With the ink barely dry on the agreement signed by Condoleezza Rice and Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg the first convincing evidence concerning the dangers of this project for the people of the Czech Republic have been published, The latest 30-page report was compiled by physicist Petr Pokorny from the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, radio waves specialist Milan Hlobil and military analyst Stanislav Kaucky.

The main danger is from the radioactive rays from the radar being reflected back to the ground from aircraft or by an atmospheric inversion; Brdy, where the radar will be located at a former Czech military base, is close to the flight paths of the heavily trafficked Prague airport.

Politically speaking the agreement will not be finalised until it has been ratified by Parliament and in order for that to happen the governing Civic Democrats will need the support of one of the Minority Parties. The main opposition party, the Social Democrats will oppose it - as do close to 70% of the population. Restarting a Cold War with Russia has little appeal - especially when this shield has nothing to do with protecting the Czechs and everything to do with making them a target. Calls for a referendum - which would massively reject the shield - have been ignored.

I didn't realize that radar emitted harmful radiation. Has that always been the case or is this proposed new radar something different?

I don't think too many people were aware of it either! This aspect was not talked about before now and its the first that I had heard of it. The apparent presumption was that it would be safe because it would be aimed up into the sky. But reflection from planes is a highly likely event at this location because the Prague airport is only some 30 kms away. And the other dangerous factor would be an inversion.

            FROM THE REPORT:
"Electromagnetic waves can be reflected within about 50 kilometres from the radar toward the ground or another plane. Every flight of the planes within 50 kilometres from the radar is potentially highly dangerous," the report said.
If the radar's performance is increased, the dangerous zone may reach as many as 80 kilometres, they added.
They say even the border of 50-kilometres is very problematic in the conditions of a dense air traffic.

A view from the British "New Statesman":
How do you make a government listen? Not an easy question to answer. Campaigners in the Czech Republic have been up against a brick wall recently: their government is determined to give the go-ahead for a new US radar base to be built near Prague, ignoring around 70 per cent of popular opposition.
For more than a year, communities have been organising to prevent this facility being built for the US missile defence system. They argue that it will put them on the front line in future US wars, and that they are being embroiled in a new Cold War, not of their making. The campaign has been carried out at every level of society, from the Shadow Foreign Minister, Lubomir Zaoralek, to tiny hamlets, where mayors have conducted local referenda, overwhelmingly opposed to the radar.
But still the government ignores the opposition and has rejected calls for a national referendum. They know they would lose.

I'm skeptical. In a politically charged debate facts are twisted... as the article stated, two different reports are saying two completely different things. I'm pretty sure if radar was actually dangerous it'd be fairly common knowledge. Its use is widespread. Then again, what about constant exposure over your lifetime? Now that's a different story. Not really sure... but the 70% of the population against it should be a hint to the government on how they should vote.

Hope the Russians will launch missiles and "TEAR DOWN THAT WALL".

If the Russians launch missiles, the world, in all probability, will end. So they shouldn't even try. The Cuban reference is the ideal response by Russia, though that was mainly blowing smoke.

You hope the Russians launch their missiles? I don't. I know you lefties, Reagan was evil, Bush is evil, blah, blah, blah. Well in case you guys don't get it, the Cold War is back and being run by Joseph Staling Putin. Now he may not be as organized and certainly is better at playing the press, but he's also the one supplying Iran with a lot of hardware and technology. This radar is protection for when Iran launches and they will if they get the bomb.

Radar is not good to be exposed to! It is a form of radiation that is harmful and can cause cancer.

Our property in Orlando was surrounded by the time we sold out with new HD television transmission towers and radio towers. There were high rates of cancer, depression, nervesness, sleepless nights, irritable moods, high rate of suicides, and a bunch of other stuff.\

After being away from there for 7 months now I can feel a huge difference in my body with out the high frequency radiation being spewed out.

I would be more concerned about getting zapped by your local police with a radar gun than this system. The power level of the reflected radar system for aircraft is barely high enough to measure.

Strange - this story was on the front page for a number of hours - then completely vanished for several hours. Then re-appeared. Gremlins? CIA interference?

I think before we jump to any CIA plots we need to remember we're still dealing with propeller. While it's gotten better. Okay not better but not much worse.

As to the CIA, I think the story is a plant from the FSS, the new KGB. Russia is selling weapons and systems to Iran, the nation or lead nation we fear has missile capable of reaching many of our EU friends. Lets be serious, if Russia wasn't trying to start a new Cold War, they would be supporting the US and EU in stopping the spread of nukes. Then again if over 250 years when has Russia not been vying for power and causing problems. Big country but not a lot to show for itself. A lot of self esteem issues.
