Maybe a statistical aberration... or I hope so. I'd really hate to think that bigotry was on the rise in LA in general.

I agree. It seems unlikely that hate crimes are really on the rise. What does seem more likely is that the way the crimes are reported has changed and that as a result, we have seen an increase in the number of cases.
That said, I am not sure that the number of crimes against gays and lesbians based on their sexual identity has decreased. In light of the Lawrence King murder, it seems now is not a good time to suggest that gays and lesbians are noticing a change in hate crimes.

The story was mislabeled, hate crimes against gays went up 9% and even higher against other groups. The report was silent on the crime rate in general in LA. Maybe all crime went up and certain hate crimes went up at a slower rate, don't know. Is hateing anyone livine in LA a hate crime? Hmmm just wondering.
