The Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University, where researchers have tracked network news content for two decades, found that ABC, NBC and CBS were tougher on Obama than on Republican John McCain during the first six weeks of the general-election campaign.

There goes the "Liberal media conspiracy" talking point. Especially since The Center for Media and Public Affairs is a conservative leaning group, with conservative backers.....

Wow how can this be. Liberals saying there is no media bias. Who could think of such a thing. What next.
All I know is one headline was. "President Reagan shut down government today by not signing the budget bill congress provided." Another one was "Congress today shut down the government today by refusing to give President Clinton a budget bill he could sign."
No bias there right? That kind of thing never happened again.
Everyone who flew with the Obama campaign trip to Iraq and Europe went with McCain on at least one of his trips right? Again no bias here right?
I have a friend that has a house he will sell you cheap on a beautiful Sarasota key.

Yeah, I pretty much knew this -- part of the reason I don't watch much TV news. Sure you can bring out individual instances of bias one way or the other, but overall it has been leaning Republican.

I'll give you another hint about the conservatives who are constantly harping about the liberal bias of the major networks and news media: To them a source is totally free of bias if it is 100% in line with their views. Anything else is biased news.

This is the article that should be at the top of the front page rather than the one penned by Rush Limbaugh about "Obama Fatigue" that's been festering there for days while the moronic right have a giggling little love fest. Probably won't happen though, since this essay actually has some substance (and big words).

But but but, Rush Limbaugh says there's a liberal bias, so it must be true.

To the right-wingers, Rush Limbaugh is unbiased.

    Is this an imaginary study?

    http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/Media-Bias-Is-Real-Finds-UCLA-6664.aspx

"Overall, the major media outlets are quite moderate compared to members of Congress, but even so, there is a quantifiable and significant bias in that nearly all of them lean to the left," said co?author Jeffrey Milyo, University of Missouri economist and public policy scholar."

A majority liberal bias in media is delusional. But the right must have things that they can believe in, like the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy and Santa Claus. And there's a whole lot more truth about those imaginary figures than a liberal media bias.

Did you read this in any of our papers??

Barack Obama defends overseas trip after meeting Britain's PM Gordon Brown
      Danica Kirka , Associated Press , London | Sat, 07/26/2008 8:47 PM | World

LONDON (AP) - U.S. presidential contender Barack Obama defended his decision to travel to Europe and the Middle East, saying Saturday that problems encountered by Americans at home are often best dealt with by working with allies overseas.

Obama, who spoke to reporters after wrapping up talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, said he was not sure if there would be any immediate political impact from the trip - and that he would not be surprised if there was a dip in some of the polls in the week since he left home. People in America, he said, are worried about gas prices and home foreclosures.

"The reason that I thought this trip was important is that I am convinced that many issues that we face at home are not going to be solved as effectively unless we have strong partners abroad," he said. "And unless we get a handle on Iraq and Afghanistan, not only are we going to be less safe, but it's also going to be a huge drain on resources."

Obama said he and Brown discussed a wide range of issues, such as climate change, terrorism and financial markets.

"The prime minister's emphasis - like mine - is on how we can strengthen the trans-Atlantic relationship to solve problems that can't be solved by any single country individually," he said. . . "

The study only looked at the Big Three network news shows for a specific period of time. It didn't look at cable TV or print media or radio or the Internet. And the study showed that Obama got MORE negative coverage than McCain, but BOTH got overall negative coverage. And this negative coverage came since both wrapped up their nominations.

If you look you will find that these findings are the opposite of what happened int he primaries:

"That was a reversal of the trend during the primaries, when the same researchers found that 64% of statements about Obama -- new to the political spotlight -- were positive, but just 43% of statements about McCain were positive."

Conservatives have been snarling about the grotesque disparity revealed by another study, the online Tyndall Report, which showed Obama receiving more than twice as much network air time as McCain in the last month and a half. Obama got 166 minutes of coverage in the seven weeks after the end of the primary season, compared with 67 minutes for McCain, according to longtime network-news observer Andrew Tyndall.

The center reviews and "codes" statements on the evening news as positive or negative toward the candidates. For example, when NBC reporter Andrea Mitchell said in June that Obama "has problems" with white men and suburban women, the media center deemed that a negative.

So now a reporter can't report the facts????

One thing studies like this do not take into account is the things not reported or asked. For example, if Obama says I'm on the banking committee and just voted on a bill and that's not true. If it's not reported is that bias? Same is true if it were McCain. My point being it's not just what is said but what's not said and that can't be part of this type of study. I conclude to take these with a grain of salt. If you can't list all the variables a study is flawed.

Ah ... I wondered why my story was not getting any 'traffic'. NO WORRIES! I'm glad the obvious is becoming more accepted.

I would like to share my point of view here ... as it took me awhile to type it on my thread.

      -----------------------
There are precious few outlets that provide ANY kind of thoughtful coverage for America. All Mainstream media is good for anymore is celebrating celebrities.

We've become a nation obsessed with celebrities and the sound-byte.

The fact is ... MILLIONS of Americans RELIGIOUSLY listen to EXTREMIST, HARD-LINE, DIS-info-tainers every day. Each day, these good Americans are hardened against moderation in their thought process.

Millions more watch FOX ... which is, quite simply, the Media Arm of the RNC. The former head of Republican Media RUNS the ding dang thing!

Same thing with Sinclair Broadcasting. Many people aren't familiar with Sinclair. I find this amazing because ... THEY OWN THE LARGEST NUMBER OF LOCAL TV STATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES!!!

Sinclair is every bit ... possibly MORE biased than FOX. Founded by Julian Sinclair Smith, an extremely hard line Right Winger.

In the 2004 election, Sinclair ORDERED that ALL of it's affiliate stations preempt prime time programming to air Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, a documentary critical of U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry's anti-Vietnam War activism, just two weeks before the November 2 election. The film was produced by Carlton Sherwood, a former associate of Tom Ridge, of the Swift-Boat cabal.'

This is abuse of power of the highest sort.

And this is what's happening to media all over the nation.

NEWSPAPERS are no different. Before he was thrown in jail, Conrad Black was on a buying spree to buy up every newspaper he could get his hands on for the EXPRESSED PURPOSE of disseminating the Hard Line Right Wing message he believed in.

In another instance, the loony cult leader, Sun Myung Moon founded the Washington Times ... for the EXPRESS purpose of promoting a right wing agenda ... and denouncing Democrat initiatives.

It was the Washington Times that single-handedly did the most to keep a steady drum-beat of scandal mania on the Clinton Presidency.

So ... no ... there IS NO Liberal Bias in media .... NONE .... it's a fabrication left over from the Right's anger at Edward R. Murrow for his having denounced the Joseph McCarthy witchhunts.

i see Willotica and lfergie challenging the validity of the Milyo study from 2005 that I linked to the UCLA website. Willotica says it has been thoroughly debunked but offers no support other than his own assertion. lfergie challenges Milyo's objectivity by asserting that he's a Republican. Careful, lfergie, studies have shown that news reporters overwhelmingly vote Democratic - by your logic that would be conclusive proof that the news can't be impartial!

Here's another, more recent study, by two institutions that have a good reputation especially among liberals. It's a joint survey by Harvard and the Project for Excellence in Journalism:

      http://www.journalism.org/node/8187

It was tracking the earlier stages of the presidential primaries. Some interesting findings:

"Democrats generally got more coverage than Republicans, (49% of stories vs. 31%.) One reason was that major Democratic candidates began announcing their candidacies a month earlier than key Republicans, but that alone does not fully explain the discrepancy."

"Overall, Democrats also have received more positive coverage than Republicans (35% of stories vs. 26%), while Republicans received more negative coverage than Democrats (35% vs. 26%). For both parties, a plurality of stories, 39%, were neutral or balanced. "

"Most of that difference in tone, however, can be attributed to the friendly coverage of Obama (47% positive) and the critical coverage of McCain (just 12% positive.) When those two candidates are removed from the field, the tone of coverage for the two parties is virtually identical."

Hey? Isn't this a thread about Obama getting pummeled by a biased media while McCain's getting a free ride? LOL - Looks like the same media was playing a different tune not so long ago...

Seems to me that the media woke up to the fact that they were having an embarrasingly intense infatuation with Obama and now they are asking the harder questions that should have occurred during the primaries.

I don't watch corporate controlled news often.
Got tired of hearing about celebrity scandals and other meaningless news.
          Including their one sided views.
And when you do get the news its usually edited ,so you don't get the whole story.

I like how the first week Gibson hosted ABC... he said he talked to several Dems when all he'd talked to was lieberman, the Bush kisser and best pal of McCain on all those overseas trips (someone has to correct McCain's gaffs). Anyway, Stephanoupalous corrected Gibson with the fact that only Lieberman had defected the Dems... this was my cue that Gibson is no Peter Jennings and I stopped watching ABC.

WOW! I went to my messages and there was Nixie, demanding that I apologize to Endoscopy!!

Interesting development ... considering the level of insult from Rodent.

So ... I decided to share my PM to Nixie with all of you here ... I think it's pertinent.

              ----------------
