Bush Forced al-Maliki to Back Down on Pullout in 2006 »

Many official and unofficial proponents of a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq are dismissing Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's demand for a U.S. timeline for withdrawal as political posturing, assuming that he will abandon it under pressure. But that demand was foreshadowed by an episode in June 2006 in which al-Maliki circulated a draft policy calling for negotiation of just such a withdrawal timetable and the George W. Bush administration had to intervene to force the prime minister to drop it.

Maliki is playing both sides of the game.

Side 1: Urge U.S. withdrawal to his Iraqi opponents
Side 2: Gladly accept the hundreds of billions of U.S. money that Bush is throwing at him

The absurdity of the entire game is highlighted by the state of the Iraq Army and Police Forces even after five-plus years of training.

The only way to end the game is to stop trowing dollars, which will force the Iraqi government to actually do something about their own defense. In this respect, it is nice that McCain and Obama both agree about a removal of U.S. troops. The only difference is that McCain's plan prolongs the tossing of dollars a bit longer.

Again. Anyone shocked that Bush pushed Malaki around after that statement came out? Anyone?

Anyone surprised by this? I also find it funny how now McCain and Bush are in favor of a "time Horizon" for troop pullout.

I guess its official now. When even Maliki is standing up to the Decider, Bush is a lame duck.

Wow, a story about Iraq with details, names, dates and more details. None of the generalized posturing that we normally get from our own media. Good submission.
