Bush blames Congress for not acting on gas prices »
Posted By not2needy 1 year, 4 months ago in NewsThe president again pinned the prospect of oil drilling off the coastline — considered a long-term energy solution — to today's high gas prices for consumers.

Why was gas almost 3$ a gallon before Bush had a democrat Congress if it's their fault? I didn't hear him degrading Congress when gas prices started to sky rocket, but now that we have a democrat Congress, it's all their fault!!
Anyone who falls for this is more ignorant than Bush is.

LOL...I'm just wondering why it hasn't dawned on cons that if Bush and the GOP truly believed their simplistic supply and demand mantra, Bush would've long ago released oil from the strategic reserve to prove it.
Why won't he do this, cons? Could it be because making up lame-***** arguments like "Duhhhhh...Bush stubbed his toe this morning and the price of gas dropped 3 cents in a hour" is way easier and a lot cheaper than doing something that might or might not have the desired effect?

Needy, this conversation has been had for two decades. We have allowed our oil industry to resist recapitalization, and we are now less efficient as a result. Furthermore, there exists no current alternative to oil for transportation energy.
We can economize immediately, which will reduce demand. We can add to the oil supply within 3-5 years by drilling, will will increase supply. This will lower gas costs.
The neat part is how speculation works: The "evil speculators" will bid down crude oil as soon as the *planning* starts, so we'll see a benefit long before we see the actual oil.

Not2needy, if you were to read one of those leases you would understand exactly why they don’t just give up the rights which that lease entitles them to. I have seen more than a few and all I have seen were the same. They are not just an oil lease. Those are actually mineral rights leases. For those which own property outside of a city these leases are very common. In fact finding out if the mineral rights are being sold with a property should be at the top of your list of questions when looking to purchase. The next thing would be to ask if there is a lease on the property. The property I live on has a mineral rights lease. There is 1 old shallow well which produces a small qty of oil each month and I get a royalty check each month. It actually got up as high as $60.00 one month On the same lease they tried drilling a few years ago. Much deeper this time and they spent a lot of money doing so. It came in dry. They then tried to pull the casing and it ended up getting stuck and they lost that also. They then had to cap the well. This is done to EPA spec and costs them some more money. This is not a cap in the normal sense. The hole is poured full of concrete. Probably not what you had pictured in your mind is it?
From a land owners perspective it would be great if these old lease were given up but I really don’t think its going to happen. Those leases cover to many things other than oil.

Big oil already holds the leases on 68 million acres of land that they aren't drilling on right now, why give them access to more land to NOT drill on.
AND before anyone says, is it cost effective to drill on that acreage, IF it wasn't they would relinquish the leases, not hold onto them. Of course it's cost effective, and that's what Congress is trying to get Bush to force Big Oil into doing, drill on the land they already hold leases on, not give them access to more Federal land.

There is a reason for that
I have been reading both sides and found the most factual onfo on FactCheck.org:
Read about it here:
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/are_the_democrats_correc...html
It's not known how much of that drilling is taking place on leases currently classified as "non-producing" and how much is taking place on leases that are already producing oil. BLM's Gewecke told us that the agency does not track acreage that is being developed or explored -

It's not this congresses fault. It's the psuedo-conservative nightmare coming true. Devaluation of the dollar, speculators, and the conflagration in the ME.
George's hand holdin buddy(and the rest of the Saudi house) is 4 times richer since Bushes Blunders drove the price of oil up.

She's doing everything she can to prevent new exploration, new drilling, and new refining. She also opposes nuclear, which compounds the puzzle.
I guess it's more fun to blame Republicans than to actually do the job you were elected to, which is : HELP THE PEOPLE!

Oil has doubled since Jan 1 2007. funny that's when Nasty Pelosi took over the House. It is high time these Dems get out of trying to run things.>>>>>
Oil began rising markedly in 2004. It's final jump that year made the 2003 prices double. How come the CONS didn't do anything then? They held Congress, right? How come they sat on their butts and did nothing? Could it be they were waiting to pawn the problem onto Democrats, knowing some people couldn't think for themselves that CONS had TWELVE YEARS to consider the energy needs of the U.S. and did NOTHING? Hmmmmm?

I somehow see how everyone is missing a very valuable point. We can all argue about who's fault gasoline prices are or we can start to work on the problem. Going 'green' (windmills & solar panels.. hehe) won't solve the problem but we can begin a correction by starting several things including refineries, loosening up restrictions on drilling platforms, nuclear, etc. Yes, these things take years but don't we have to start or shall we wait another 5-10 years to begin these processes while stalling everything in the name of an election. Most of this IS in the hands of Congress, like it or not.

sachwall - If you could please tell me what does the house/ Nancy has to do with the price of oil? Is Nancy vested in the oil company? The only member of our government that I can say is vested in oil are the president and the VP, correct?
Reply
Are you saying when these men had a GOP congress they did nothing but now that there is a DEM congress they are the brain power on our oil situation? Please do some thinking before repeating what you see on FOX , they have no idea what they are talking about. You sound as big a fool as they when you say the things they say.

A coalition of bipartisan House members unveiled an energy bill that they say can pass Congress before it adjourns for the year.
Reply
Reps. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, and John Peterson, R-Pa., said the package would repeal the moratorium on drilling in some offshore areas, but prohibit leasing within 25 miles of the coastline and allow states to opt out of the 25 to 50 mile area offshore.
It would also enhance tax incentives for renewable energy and modify the refining capabilities of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
"We want people around the country to rise up and take a vote," Abercrombie said, appealing to voters to tell their lawmakers to pass legislation. "Put it on the floor for a two-thirds vote. If we don't take action (on energy), what right do we have to be here?"
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,394642,00.html
I have to agree with Abercrombie
If Congress fails to act on energy and leaves for their August break, none of them deserves to be there -

bush is a liar. The oil companies aren't even drilling on all the leases they hold now, nor are they refining oil at the capacity that they could, thus keeping supply down. Giving big oil these new leases will do NOTHING to affect gas prices.

A major reason for holding those leases is not for oil but for minerals. Exxon Mobil make a very significant part of their money from chemical plants. I imagine that other oil companies do the same. Digging for minerals is more risky than drilling for oil. They use seismic waves to see what the formations are down there but that does not tell them what minerals are there.

Bush is helping out his rich oil buddies. These old gray codgers have more than enough money- they are literally draining the treasury and the American people dry.
It's sad since they can't take it with them... and they will have to answer for their murders.

Ok. Let's vote to allow more drilling so that we can get more supply on the market!
Oh wait... was it BUSH that just blocked the vote in the House and CHENEY that blocked it in the Senate? NO!!!!
Meet Pelosi and Reid... two reasons why we can't even have a vote!

What mm said "And as far as congress not acting on gas prices...back in '06 right after the dems got in they introduced a "gas tax holiday" bill that was stonewalled by republicans ,including McCain because their plan to make up for the lost revenue was to repeal the billions in tax breaks to the oil companies who are making record profits"!!!!!

This infected pustule on a skunk's ass will continue to blame anybody and anything for his corrupt, inept, criminal mis-administration.
He has been a drug-addled, drunken, miserable failure at everything he has attempted in life. His presidency is a world-wide laughing stock, and his greatest failure ever.
if a million people weren't dead as a result of his criminal activity, it would be funny. The families of his war victims, the unemployed, workers who have seen their benefits disappear, their jobs vanish, and their dollars reduced to pennies aren't laughing, either.
Repukes and Cons are laughing like hyenas - all the way to the bank.
McCain is drooling and leaking in his depends, waiting in the wings to complete Dumbya's "Mission Accomplished."

Carter started things moving in that direction, with windfall taxes on BIG OIL. He also started funding for alternative energy. He even put solar panels on the White House! Raygun repealed the windfall tax and also tore down the solar panels. The republicons have been in power 20 of the last 28 years. Lay the blame for this abortion at their feet.

CA, Oregon, and WA think it is, & we don't want those bastards destroying our coast lines! All three governors are fighting against drilling, and with good cause. There have been scores of spills that are seldom talked about by our so called 'news' media, & obviously the oil cartels don't give a damn about our environment. my 'god', they can't even maneuver down the Mississippi River without running into another vessel in broad daylight!

I've been to Texas. You can walk maybe 100 yards offshore and still only be waist deep. The oil rigs there are 25-100 miles out. Over the horizon. The Left Coast is different. 5 feet out is 5 feet deep. It's a rocky coast with a steep drop off. Those rigs would be RIGHT THERE. You could almost paddle your surf board out to them. They would be in the coastal shipping lanes. There are a lot of millionaires on that coast who wouldn't want oil washing up on their beach front property either. This is an earthquake zone too. What makes you think those pipes won't crack in a shaker? I love going to Monterey and there is no way oil rigs will be allowed there.

Actually yes. Here in Virginia, rinning for senator Mark Warner (D) says it (and rightly so) is part of his energy plan. It will add hundreds maybe thousands of new jobs. I'm no democrat supporter, but his plan makes the most sense; drill now and everywhere; invest in alternatives; and get Washington to step back and let market forces take over.

Is this a politically motivated action ? Definitely. Will it affect gas prices in the short term? Probably not. At one extreme, it will make GWB look like a fool--IMHO truth in advertising. At the other extreme, it may actually lead to something being done--which would be the first time in a looong time.
Do I blame the Congress for this mess? Yes, every one since 1980. Do I blame the Prez for this mess? Yes, every one since 1980. All of them have been so busy trying to score political points on the "other guys" that they've completely neglected to do anything that would move us forward. They all deseved to be flogged with linguini.
On supplies--in the mid-1960's there were 9 years' supplies left; in the early 1970's , there were 9 years' supplies left; same in the mid-1970's and the late 1970's. And Surprise!, I'll betcha that there are still 9 years' reserves left.
I truly don't know whether drilling offshore will find a drop of oil. But there will be no more oil found without drilling somewhere. So unless someone is planning on conjuring up an eternal energy source from nothingness, we'd best be thinking about drilling.
Based on my experiences with oil companies, I'm pretty skeptical of the "oil industry" conspiracies. True, the industry has a limited number of participants and it's far from a free market. They do only one thing well-find oil and make products from it; when they go into other industries, they're lucky to be able to put one foot in front of the other without tripping over it. That this industry could have the cohesiveness to pull off a price conspiracy to me strains credibility.
We've spent something like 60 years getting ourselves in the current prediciment, with mostly everything done since 1980 being detrimental to both efficiency and providing alternatives. Nothing is going to be solved overnight; not with the "magic of the marketplace" or anything else either.

If you truly want to know about an energy crisis that does not exist read the book "The Energy Non-Crisis" by Mr. Lindsey Williams' published in 1980. Oil discovered on the north slope of Alaska on Gull Island, the wells were drilled tested and capped, and not any of that oil has been pumped out of those wells on Gull Island. After reading the book, "YOU" will find that the oil from the Prudhoe Bay field is not even being used or distributed to our refineries nor to the American public, It is being loaded on oil tankers and shipped to Japan, and other countries but not one drop to the American Oil Refineries and Yet the Oil Companies won't speak up for fear of the threat of bankruptcy and the Federal Government nationalizing the oil industry, meaning that the Government will seize control of the Oil Companies. because "THE OIL COMPANIES" were told that the sulfur content from Prudhoe Bay could not be refined in the United States. So they ship it out of this country. Read the book You'll know that its not a lie; Only then can you see that the energy crisis that the Government constantly threatens us with to scare us into excepting the outrageous fuel price increases at their own discretion and they wonder why this country is once again going into a recession or even worse A DEPRESSION...READ THE BOOK...READ THE BOOK...READ THE BOOK

We don't need to drill for more oil. It's not a supply problem. It's corruption.
Everyone knows that the oil companies will sit on the permits.
The permits are a way for Bush to reward his oil buddies.
Obama should continue to campaign on "investigating" and "stopping" the price gouging by the oil companies. We should throw some oil speculators in jail and regulate the oil companies. They have record profits.

Not unless we try something like this
http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/04/spanish-solar-tower-could-eventually-power-an-entire-city/
But the puesdo-cons do not want to invest in any alternative energy. Why would they when they have a direct pipe-line to the consuming masses wallets.
