"Acheson said the farm is in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Previously, the FDA had traced a contaminated jalapeno pepper to a farm in another part of Mexico."
"Acheson and other officials were grilled at a congressional hearing about why the investigation originally focused on tomatoes."
"The officials insisted that tomatoes still cannot be ruled out and that it is quite possible that the outbreak was caused by several different kinds of contaminated produce."
"The outbreak has sickened more than 1,300 people since April."

Having been an inspector by trade, this makes me ill without eating the bad food. No excuse for lack of catching and containing bad produce!
The poor individuals who got sick and have to pay for the incompetence of our FDA.
Wonder what foods are really safe, since the FDA really doen't know for sure about anything!
Thanks STONERS!

Well, do it! Vegetable gardening is fun, satisfying and gives you MUCH better-tasting veggies than you can buy at the store, since you pick them at peak ripeness. Or pick them young and tender, like carrots, lettuce, etc. If you want to know how to grow only the number of plants you need in a compact area, with a minimum amount of work, PM me. I don't want to be accused of spamming. :)

It was pretty obvious where the source of the contamination was located if you followed the history

The initial investigation of the outbreak were cases in New Mexico and Texas. Where was produce coming from at that time of the year in NM & TX - Mexico
Who irrigates crops with poorly treated sewage water - Mexico
Is this a surprise to anyone?
It's just a shame that the Florida tomato growers had to experience such a huge loss because the government didn't want to admit what was obvious from the start -

Well, a number of Libs called me a racist when this crisis began and I said that it originated with unsanitary conditions on the farms in Mexico where the food is raised. I'll be glad to accept apologies now that my position has been independently verified. Saying that Mexico is not the cleanest place in the world after having visited the country a number of times isn't being racist.

These sorts of things will continue to happen. Some right-wingers holler about too much government regulation. Well, if the Mexican government had a tad more oversight of either their water treatment or farming practices, this outbreak might have been avoided.
Further, if the FDA budget hadn't been continually cut by the Bush administration, forcing them to drastically reduce inspection and investigation staff, this might have been caught earlier if not entirely averted.

Every time my sister and her husband went on vacation in Mexico, they got Manta Zumas revenge, even thought they didn't drink the water!
That is why I don't trust the food coming from Mexico or any other country that a visitor can't drink the water with getting sick.
