Comments for Convincing the climate-change skeptics »
Posted By ameliog 1 year, 4 months ago in Science & TechnologyLong-time observers of public debates about environmental threats know that skeptics about such matters tend to move, over time, through three stages. First, they tell you you're wrong and they can prove it. Then they tell you you're right but it doesn't matter. Finally, they tell you it matters but it's too late to do anything about it.

Oh, posh. There are significant numbers of titled scientists who are skeptical about the nature, extent and causes of global warming. No one seriously doubts that temperatures have gone up, but there are significant data errors regarding the amount of that rise. The causation for the rise is very seriously debated, and man's contribution to the change is also rigorously debated.

What a truly scurrilous article, and a waste of my time to read.-

Actually there are what effectively amounts to a handful of scientists with appropriate credentials that disagree with the consensus. Many of those have had their studies funded by, guess who? Large oil and coal companies.
Reply
Further, one has to look at motive. What possible motive is there for manufacturing a scientific lie? Funding? There is not much environmental funding available in the first place, and agreeing with the consensus simply dilutes the pool. Prestige? Science is all about proving your peers wrong or coming up with the Next Big Thing. This is not a pack of thumb-sitters.
The Earth is warmer and there is a greater amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 is a known greenhouse gas. If the sun were simply getting warmer then the upper stratosphere (the layer above the reach of CO2) should be warming as well. It isn't In fact, it's cooling, due to a greater amount of heat reflected back to the Earth
Increased CO2 is also showing up as increased acidity levels in the oceans. Excess CO2 that cannot be 'fixed' by organisms is turned into carbonic acid, changing the delicate pH balance of the seas and potentially disrupting the food chain.
Frankly, I HOPE the consensus is wrong, but I see little data that points to the contrary.-

1. The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it.
2. There is no evidence to support the idea that carbon emissions cause significant global warming.
3. The satellites that measure the world's temperature all say that the warming trend ended in 2001, and that the temperature has dropped about 0.6C in the past year (to the temperature of 1980).
4. The new ice cores show that in the past six global warmings over the past half a million years, the temperature rises occurred on average 800 years before the accompanying rise in atmospheric carbon. Which says something important about which was cause and which was effect.
Instead, what do we get? The world has spent $50 billion on global warming since 1990 and yet there is no evidence that carbon emissions are actually causing global warming! It's a fraud. A fraud to enrich Gore, and a fraud designed to form the basis for repeated attacks on capitalism and free market economies. -

The saddest part of the whole climate debate is the thought that man has that much power over the planet and nature. Do I think that man is polluting the planet and affecting the environment? Absolutely! Do I believe that we really have any power to change to climate in any significant way? Absolutely not! This planet of ours has seen warming and cooling many thousands of times over many centuries. The planet changes to compensate and adjust. Some day the environment may not be viable for human life, but that will probably have little to do with human activities. We are at the peak of a current warming trend, give it 100 years and it will start cooling again.

Time for my 2 cents worth , to those who believe that we are all to blame for global warming , stop what you are doing , like reading this throw away your PC , and anything else that uses power , tear your house down , get rid of that car and go live in a cave in Durkadurkastan , doing nothing to use up earth's resources , you people are all talk , and yet do nothing , only in small measure , you are not going to give up your lifestyle and live in a cave , what ever you do uses and consumes earths resources , even if you give up the car and ride a bike , how is that bike made , in a factory by the thousand using steel , rubber and plastics made by other equally big factories , so unless you are going to live in a mud hut somewhere stop bleeting , you really are no better than the rest of us mere mortals trying to get by in this world .

Secondly , when these envirowacko's have a conference why is it in some exotic location ?

How do they get there , do they walk , ride a bike , or do they fly in a gas guzzeling aircraft , then taxi to their location , which I believe is the case , why dont they go to Detroit , or Winnipeg or somewhere in Siberia , instead of some Air conditioned hotel in paradise , you people are not really showing us "Norm's " out here a good example of how to live , more of a " do as I say not as I do " approach , hypocrosy is a word that comes to mind about now . -

I detect a certain amount of hysteria among those claiming there is no warming happening. They are losing a lot of their base. The outdoors men and women, hunters, fishers, etc. are actually seeing it happen. The well funded anti-global warming computer sites propaganda can only do so much. Sort of like telling their conservative base, "Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes."

There are not a lot of people saying there is no climate change , all I am saying that this world has had climate change long before the dawn of man , and will continue long after his demise , and as for the hunters etc , where they around during the last climate change 10,000 years ago in northern europe , when it was covered in ice and when it all warmed up and melted , did they think it was all mans fault then .

Just in passing how much do natural polluters play in all this climate change , an average volcano releases lots of Sulphur and carbon dioxide each day does anyone think they should be carbon taxed , ( would if they could ........right! ) -

thirdly , when are you going to protest on the steps of the goverment buildings in China , India and a whole host of other up and coming ecconomies and tell them they have no right to a half decient life style like what we have in the west , these contries are at the moment the biggest polluters in the world , take a look at China at the moment , we in the west have bent over backwards to help the enviroment cause , not perfect I grant you , but a whole lot cleanner than what's out there , so you can try and change the west to your design , but untill you change the like's of China , India etc it will be all in vain , a total exercise in futillity .

Forthly and last a quote from someone who knows about climate
Reply
Joseph D’Alea, the first Director of Meteorology at The Weather Channel and former chief of the American Meteorological Society’s Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecast, says that “carbon dioxide (CO2) is 0.000383 of our atmosphere by volume. . . Only 0.0275 of atmospheric CO2 is [man-made] in origin. . . We are responsible for 0.00001 of this atmosphere. If the atmosphere were a 100-story building, our [man-made] CO2 contribution today would be equivalent to the linoleum on the first floor.” Do we really want to spend a trillion dollars on linoleum?
Sorry for a little convenient truth here -

Change the title the "climate change promoters", then begin to read the article, why you'd think it was about them. Three positions are taken. I like the first one. If one were to note that the world has been cooling the past ten years and this is well documented, then your only conclusion is that those who banter on about global warming, will in due course start to talk about global changes. After all, there are always changes and that can not be refuted by logic. So open up your wallets friends and contribute to all the scams out there before time runs out on the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind. The article implies that the doubters are all over the internet, talk shows with their constant drumbeats, but in reality this post is another example of their fraudulent drumbeat. Those of us with cooler heads, (snicker), seldom bring the topic up.

Speaking of Gore’s waste and gluttony, I wonder how ginormous his carbon footprint was while he was jetting around the world promoting his lie/movie and trying to convince everyone to invest in his companies.
It was reported in April that An Inconvenient Truth used computer-generated footage from the movie The Day After Tomorrow to show a crumbling ice shelf. Those are the kinds of deceptions necessary when trying to convince the world of a lie. Just as Nazi Propaganda Chief Joseph Goebbels said, “[T]ell a lie enough and it becomes accepted as truth.” As well as that has worked for Gore, support for his “planet in peril” mantra is eroding faster than he claims the ice caps are. In 2007 a British court held that, in order for his lie/movie to be shown to school children, “eleven inaccuracies have to be specifically drawn to the attention of the [students].” Among those inaccuracies, the court ruled, was that rises in CO2 lagged behind temperature rises by 800-2,000 years; that despite the movie’s claim, it is a scientific impossibility for global warming to cause the Gulf Steam to stop flowing; and that, while the movie claims sea levels could rise 23 feet, the evidence showed sea levels are expected to rise 15 inches over the next 100 years. If you believe Gore, we shouldn’t even bother buying green bananas, the end is so close at hand. Gore should have won his Oscar for the best mockumentary, not documentary, of 2007. -

Finally , because it is time for bed , i want someone to tell me all about global warming this January when it's minus 49.6 degs C , I live in Manitoba , and that is what we had it down to at one point , I believe Winnipeg had minus 51 a couple of years ago , so any talk of warming is music to my ears

OK, well, I guess Propeller doesn't want me posting the truth. Apparently, I can't give you a direct link.

However, go to epw.senate.gov/public and look in the minority listing for an article on this topic.
Then, go to eworldvu.com and look for the article on the global warming skeptic.
They are interesting articles. I hate to inform those of you who wish to believe we are so powerful as to be able to change the climate of the whole planet, but that's simply not the case. We are caretakers, at times not even good ones, but that's all. To believe we can alter the mechanism of the planet is arrogant in the extreme.
