Science Fiction is not dead, and never will be dead »

Every year, people prophecy the death of science fiction, but science fiction, as a whole, is not dead. Maybe some parts of it are—the pure “wow, incredible idea neat-o extreme wonder” stories. But the most reachable stories, the ones that speak to a common demographic, are about, and always have been about, the human condition.

Its interesting, people talk about the "death of science fiction" but there is never the same concern over the "death of fantasy". I don't know if its because fantasy readers/writers honestly are not bothered by the question, or if it just never occurs to them that fantasy would ever really "die". I read both flavours, sci-fi and fantasy, and I don't see either one going away soon or ever.

I think the only world in which neither would be relevant, would be a world so amazing that we didn't need to: a) escape from it (fantasy and some sci-fi) or b) be provoked into thinking about/doing something about it (sci-fi and some fantasy). Of course, if utopia doesn't have sf, do I really want to live there...

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. True then, True now, So long as imagination is part of the human psyche, SF will survive as an art form. HG Wells started the popularization, and it hasn't slowed much since then. Saying What If... and going on to tell the story is what it's about, not the science or the magic, but the people in extraordinary situations who use ordinary and innovative ways to problem solve and get out from under the problems of the day. Limited water resources on Luna, Throw off Authority... :-)
